ARCHIVED Low Vitamin D & High Cholesterol...advice?
nutritionguy replied to wystearya's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Perhaps one of the most common causes of elevated cholesterol is glucose intolerance. Have you ever been diagnosed with diabetes? Even an elevated fasting blood sugar without overt diabetes can be associated with increased cholesterol--so have you had a recent fasting blood sugar done. If you do have glucose intolerance, this is most easily approached... -
If you look up the drug Terbinafine, you will see that one of the possible side effects is liver injury--so if your liver enzymes are elevated before you even start taking the drug, that might put you at greater risk for liver injury. Don't worry, however, about having taken the drug for such a short period of time. As for your elevated "liver enzymes"...

ARCHIVED Too Limited Diet, And Still Sick. Not Sure What To Do...
nutritionguy replied to madminx's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
1. Do you have a diagnosis of celiac disease, or do you have a diagnosis of some other gastrointestinal disease? 2. Since you are unexpectedly losing weight now, has your doctor recently determined your fasting blood sugar to make sure that everything is OK with your blood sugar? Blood sugar problems can result in gastrointestinal as well as other health... -
ARCHIVED From Constipation To Diarrhea?
nutritionguy replied to funkflex's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Unless you have a specific infection that requires antibiotics to maintain or restore your health, you should probably not be on them. And acne, in my opinion, is usually not one of them. And yes, you did write about your acne and being on antibiotics for it someplace on this website, although I don't see any mention of it in the thread of postings above... -
ARCHIVED From Constipation To Diarrhea?
nutritionguy replied to funkflex's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Taking probiotics is good. However, if you are still on antibiotics, the good from the probiotics could be totally negated. The problem is that antibiotics may be killing healthful bacteria in your intestines and allowing inflammatory bacteria to proliferate. If you are still taking antibiotics and you are still having diarrhea, there is an extremely high... -
ARCHIVED From Constipation To Diarrhea?
nutritionguy replied to funkflex's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Some medications might have this type of side effect. Are you taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications? Also, probiotics may be helpful with alleviating this--though figuring out the primary cause if possible is very important. Are you taking any probiotics? -
ARCHIVED Questioning Celiac Diagnosis..?
nutritionguy replied to Griffon3's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
"my recent worsening of symptoms seemed to have started after taking the antibiotics for acne" Bingo: It is possible that some antibiotics--especially if taken long term--might significantly interfere with the growth of healthful, protective gastrointestinal bacteria and cause diarrhea in some people who have gastrointestinal problems. Probiotics can... -
ARCHIVED Neurologist Vs Gastroenterologist
nutritionguy replied to ms-issippi's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
With all due respect, this poster stated "neither my neurologist nor my GI seems to feel that there's a connection between my gut and my head". The poster is searching for an explantation for the new onset neurologic symptoms she is having--which have not been improved by either the neurologist nor the GI specialist. As I suspect that there are a number...- 23 replies

ARCHIVED Neurologist Vs Gastroenterologist
nutritionguy replied to ms-issippi's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Celiac disease is an immunologic disease that can be associated with other health problems including diabetes. Although many people on this forum indicate that simple sugars are gluten free, the fact of the matter is that simple sugars (glucose, fructose, dextrose, lactose, sucrose, etc.) can worsen glucose tolerance, which in turn can worsen just about...- 23 replies

In the United States, cows and chickens are fed grains rather than grass, resulting in the production of fats which are rich in omega-6 fatty acids, which in excess can cause significant inflammation. Whereas 100% grass fed chickens lay eggs with a balanced omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratio of about 1:1, grain fed chickens lay eggs with an omega-6 to omega...

ARCHIVED Probiotics Causing Issues?
nutritionguy replied to durrsakja's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You've certainly raised my curiosity level. Do you feel comfortable indicating the Brand name of this powder? I am interested in Googling it and seeing exactly what is listed as the vegetable base on which the probiotic bacteria are grown. If the company does list all of the vegetables in the culture and there are no processed vegetables or other ingredients... -
ARCHIVED Probiotics Causing Issues?
nutritionguy replied to durrsakja's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
But the probiotic you have been taking is a pill--is it not? And if so, the casing of the pill is made of something other than the probiotic bacteria. Do you know what the casing of the pill is made of and whether or not this might be a problem? Do you know the contents of the vegetable culture other than the probiotic bacteria? If not, this is one of... -
ARCHIVED Can Soy Intolerance Cause Villous Atrophy?
nutritionguy replied to Pegleg84's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Bartful: I have a very strong strong scientific background. That being said, most of what I am posting is based on personal experience as well as my knowledge of the scientific literature. As for David Servan-Schreiber, I only came across his book by accident, and I was very profoundly influenced by what he wrote. -
ARCHIVED Can Soy Intolerance Cause Villous Atrophy?
nutritionguy replied to Pegleg84's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
The publications on soy appear to stem from (ie: caused by) soy protein isolate--not soy beans per se. That being said, if you have an allergy to soy protein, you should definitely avoid soy beans. As for the problems with dairy, they extend way beyond dairy. In the United States, cows and chickens are fed grains rather than grass, resulting in the production... -
ARCHIVED Can Soy Intolerance Cause Villous Atrophy?

I am a type 1 diabetic and have a first cousin who is also type 1diabetic and has celiac disease. My HLA typing is DQ2, which also puts me at increased risk for celiac disease. Over the last 12 years, I had unexplained iron deficiency; and over the last several years, I lost quite a bit of weight. Several years ago, I switched from whole grains to just... -
ARCHIVED Probiotics Causing Issues?
nutritionguy replied to durrsakja's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Anything is possible, but it seems more likely that you are having an allergic reaction to one or more of the binders, fillers, or other ingredients in the pills containing probiotics that you are taking. Have you considered getting your probiotics by eating foods that are fermented with probiotic bacteria. If you have a Whole Foods supermarket near you... -
I have type 1 diabetes, have a genetic predisposition for celiac disease (I have a first cousin with type 1 diabetes and celiac disease, and I am DQ2 positive). I also had a history of symptoms (weight loss, iron deficiency, GI discomfort when eating gluten containing foods) which were consistent with celiac disease, but I tested negative for antibodies...

ARCHIVED Neurological Symptoms With Other Food Allergies?
nutritionguy replied to celiac girl's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
In the United States, cows and chickens are generally fed and fattened with grains rather than grass. And animals that are fed grains are very high in omega- fatty acids, which are inflammatory. Chickens that are grown only on grass (which is very hard to find) lay eggs with an omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratio close to 1 to 1 (ie: in balance). Eggs... -
ARCHIVED Duodenal Intraepithelial Lymphocytosis, Negative Haplotype, Help!
nutritionguy replied to livelaughlove3885's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I happen to be genetically at risk for celiac disease, but biopsy and antibody negative--even though I had symptoms which were consistent with celiac disease. Also, I have a first cousin with celiac disease. Having said all that, a gluten free diet made me feel better, but it did not reverse my weight loss. Even probiotics helped me, but did not reverse...
