If it helps, Most "modified food starch" in the US is gluten-free (made from corn). Having said that, I always call/e-mail/check with the company before I purchase it. Cell phone in the grocery store is the way to go or write down their website and product type and e-mail them. Bronco -

ARCHIVED Ham
VegasCeliacBuckeye replied to BRCoats's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I like the Hormel Cure 81 Hame. I usually put a glaze of honey over myself and bake it. Or you can just unwrap it and eat it on sandwiches. Either way, it is pretty darn good ham...... It is in the meat case at most grocery stores near the other "large Hams".....you can buy it in the 5 lb version or the smaller .5 - 1.5 lb block... -
ARCHIVED Rice In Restaurants
VegasCeliacBuckeye replied to mandigirl1's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Elonwy, I should have clarified. When I say "Real Chicken stock", I mean the stock that is made at the restaurants by boiling chicken. You are correct regarding the portion of chicken stocks that are canned/packaged -- some may contain gluten/food starch. Normally, restaurants that have the "glutenized" chicken stock are mom/pop places and chain... -

ARCHIVED Rice In Restaurants
VegasCeliacBuckeye replied to mandigirl1's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Fried rice can be ok if cooked in a skillet or clean surface and no soy sauce is added (or you can just bring your own gluten-free soy sauce) . As far as rice in restaurants, the thing to look out for is if they have combined the rice with water and artificial chicken stock. Artificial chicken stock is normally made from wheat gluten......real chicken... -
ARCHIVED Bard's Beer
VegasCeliacBuckeye replied to Diosa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ironically, I had purchased a case of Bards when I was back in Ohio. EVERY SINGLE bottle foamed up like crazy when I opened it -- I honestly got like half a beer out of each one -- disappointing! My friend (non-celiac) bought a 6 pack because he liked the beer so much. He was giving his toddler a bath in the sink while he put one of the beers on... -

Don't be too harsh on them. We represent less than 1% of their total sales. I appreciate the effort from these places, but I do not expect it (I have been a waiter/bartender fore 10 years)... Life at restaurants has gotten better than it was 5 years ago . And back then it was better than 5 years prior to that. For all of you newbies, you should have...

I get the chili all the time at my Wendy's. The other day, they made my burger wrong and I saw them throw the burger into a "food waste" trash can....
