ARCHIVED Sweet Baby Rays - Distilled Vinegar Question
Nick-incollege replied to RPM's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It doesn't bother me! I usually react to vinegar distilled from grain too -
ARCHIVED Newbie Questions About Whisky
Nick-incollege replied to KCG91's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Most producers usually add mash back before each distillation. So there isn't any in the finished product for most liquors (although with some whisky, they DO add it to the finished product - see some of the below articles), but it usually has been added before that last distillation. As I said before, you also usually do not make whisky through multiple... -
ARCHIVED Newbie Questions About Whisky

Please read the entirety of my post, besides the "me and other celiacs" line. I provided plenty of good evidence, and sources, (is this site itself not a legitimate enough source?) that back up the claim that it is unknown to what extent liquor distilled from grain is gluten free. Like I said, I don't know why this ONE site stubbornly holds to the claim that... -
ARCHIVED Myessentials - Gluten Free?
Nick-incollege posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Does anyone shop at hannafords and buy MyEssentials? None of their items specify whether they are gluten free or not, and they aren't mentioned anywhere on the web. I just bought some myessentials cranberry sauce so was wondering if anyone knew! -
ARCHIVED Red Bull - Celiac Question!
Nick-incollege replied to Glutenfreeplease's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hey corey, I'm 21, celiac and a big fan of red bull. Don't believe it gives me any problems and i'm pretty sensitive. Their website also says gluten free! You might have another nonceliac problem -
Thanks everyone! Guess I wasn't gluten-free enough, I'm pretty sure I did get some reactions from cross-contaminated processed food! Which never occured for me before, I assumed FDA rules required a company to disclose whether a food could be cross contaminated (because I saw so many brands that did in fact disclose that information) which as you say...

ARCHIVED Newbie Questions About Whisky
Nick-incollege replied to KCG91's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Psawyer, Good liquor is distilled 5 or more times. An average bottle of vodka or rum is almost always distilled at least 3x, but can be distilled up to 20x. Whiskies and scotch are usually only distilled once or twice. (Although there are some nice scotches that are an exception ) Distillation seems to remove most of the gluten, but gluten may still... -
ARCHIVED One Year In With Celiac 8-Yo Daughter. Feeling So Sad.
Nick-incollege replied to ViennaGirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hey, Being 21/still a child, (ha) I can tell you it gets easier as you grow older. It was a bit hard for me as an underclassman in college (I didn't get the disease until college) but after getting older, I think you reach a point where you're not disadvantaged at all. Even though I'm ridiculously sensitive (2 week long reactions to just a tiny bit of... -
ARCHIVED Newbie Questions About Whisky
Nick-incollege replied to KCG91's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Jack daniels kills me if I drink it. Like, literally kills me. It may have mash added back in, I dunno. Personally I don't drink hard alcohol distilled from wheat - whisky most of all. (There is controversy over this) I get a terrible reaction every single time. I think (again, personally) it is only gluten free if it is distilled enough. I would imagine... -
Hey, Question for you guys. I've been gluten free for a year (celiac) and only eat products that 1.) don't contain wheat products in the ingredient list and 2.) don't say anything about being processed in a facility that also processes wheat. So my question is.. Can something be processed on lines that also process wheat without having to disclose...

ARCHIVED New Celiac
Nick-incollege replied to flutteringby's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
hey alannah! I am 21 as well and got diagnosed a year ago - just like you, nobody in my family has had it before. i had stomach surgery a few years back, and i kinda also think it might've triggered celiacs. im also pretty surprised it got bad so fast! two years ago, I was eating gluten and drinking beer like nobodys business. now, I get pretty messed up... -
ARCHIVED Need A Gluten Free Friend
Nick-incollege replied to manderoni22's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
hey! I'm 21, and I've been gluten free for a year now, but still have trouble with it a lot. i get reactions pretty often still (somehow) so I'm still learning! I think as you get older your friends start to understand more, so i usually don't feel too weird having to be pretty particular about what I eat. but, a lot of times, even if I order a gluten free... -
ARCHIVED College Dating
Nick-incollege replied to DS29790bb's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
hey, I'm 21 and sorta have the same problem. usually I just look up places beforehand - you can usually get really good mexican or something that is gluten free! it's still sometimes restricting, but worse case scenario, i just get a salad or something which most places have. not all places do i guess, and it is definitely hard sometimes, but once you get... -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Had Raynauds Syndrome Improve On Gluten Free Diet?
Nick-incollege replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
yeah, actually! I didn't notice until now, but since going gluten free a year ago, I haven't had my fingers turn white once! which totally never happens, it used to happen like all the time -
ARCHIVED International Travel - What Am I Going To Eat?
Nick-incollege replied to sweetsailing's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
hey! I just spent the last five months living abroad/traveling.. and it's actually WAY easier outside of the country! the food standards of the US are absolutely horrible, and you'll find that most other countries aren't going to put bulls$#& processed ingredients in their food. most of the time, a food isn't going to have any trace of gluten in it unless... -

ARCHIVED Am I Really Celiac?
Nick-incollege replied to Nick-incollege's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've been 100% gluten free for the last four months (really for the last year, although before those four months I did have slightly contaminated food once in a while - like ate rice at a dining hall without checking if its gluten free, cheated once a week but that was like 8 months ago)- and yep, checked my shampoo, medicine if I take it, alcohol, and make... -
ARCHIVED Am I Really Celiac?
Nick-incollege replied to Nick-incollege's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Does mono cause stomach issues? It also only last a few weeks, or in exceptional cases like three months right? I got a mono (blood) test a few months ago, and it was negative. Perhaps consuming things like hard alcohol is the issue, although sometimes I feel fine for a week, then feel bad for two, and back again. If I drink during the beginning... -
ARCHIVED Am I Really Celiac?
Nick-incollege posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
A year and a half ago I started feeling tired/dazed/sore throat all the time. Whenever I drank beer, I would get wicked hangovers. Then it started getting worse, I felt tired and nauseaus all the time. One year ago, my blood test was negative for celiacs, but a biopsy was positive. (i had the whole scalloping folds thing) I immediately went gluten free, and... -
ARCHIVED Greater "sensitivity" To Alcohol?
Nick-incollege replied to NoGlutenCooties's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't have much of a problem with alcohol that is gluten free, although i am in college (a senior) so still kinda young. I had a ton of problems (i mean a ton) drinking when I first started out. It is a total myth that the distillation process takes out gluten from alcohol - it does, to some extent, but to celiacs who are pretty sensitive (so, most... -
ARCHIVED Dealing With Getting Glutened?
Nick-incollege replied to upsilamba's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hmmm. are you sure irish? I've done a lot of research, and talked to a couple pretty reputable experts - they all say that alcohol distilled from wheat is many times NOT gluten free if it hasn't been distilled that many times. So, cheaper vodkas many time make celiacs react very strongly. more expensive alcohol that has been distilled many times generally... -

Hey! I'm 21 and in college, and am going through exactly the same thing you are. Like, exactly - when i first read your post I did a double take and had to make sure I didn't write it myself when I was in one of my hazy-i-dont-really-know-what-is-happening-to-my-life-its-all-a-blur gluten reactions. My reactions hit me 12-36 hours later, and last from... -
ARCHIVED Greater "sensitivity" To Alcohol?
Nick-incollege replied to NoGlutenCooties's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
For the first couple months, I had a ton of problems drinking, mostly because it's harder than you'd think to learn all the gluten-free alcohols! If you drank vodka or spiced rum, chances are it wasn't gluten free
