  1. I don't think there is an average - it entirely depends on how *you* choose to eat on the diet. We stick to naturally gluten free foods most of the time (unless I'm getting foods for backpacking, and not dehydrating my own), so it's not necessarily expensive if you shop with money-saving ideas in mind. (Things like stretching more expensive items like meat...
  2. where will you be in seattle?
  3. Oooo, I'll bite! I promise I'm not offended. I used to be ... borderline skeptical. One of those "I accept there are things out there I can't understand, and whooboy if this isn't one of them. I'll move on now," sorts of things. But I did a little more research into it, and found that the medical field *HAS* found diagnostic differences in people...
  4. If you read the threads about schools, perhaps school isn't actually off the hit list. If there are communal eating locations, it could be a prime area for cross contamination. (I'll assume that trades and cheating aren't in anyway possible. )
  5. I just use my regular old recipe, but use gluten free soy sauce (san-j). The recipe is in Open Original Shared Link.
  6. I have fibro (dx'ed early, and it's comparatively mild; I still work a regular schedule). You're symptoms could be it, but it's also similar in expression to other CSS (central sensitization syndrome) conditions like chronic fatigue. Generally, though, there is more widespread pain than just in the back/neck. One of the hallmarks of fibro is having at...
  7. I have had chronic headaches. Going gluten and casein free didn't get rid of them (though casein was a headache trigger). I never was able to isolate a particular migraine trigger really, and I'm on daily preventatives, because twice weekly migraines that last 2-3 days a piece is a bit of a problem. What was also contributing to my headaches, however,...
  8. I eat Gluten-free Casein-free all the time. We have stirfries, chicken soup, stew, grilled meat and sauteed veggies most often. Sometimes I'll make chili or tacos or some other varieties of soup, or pasta, salads, lasagna (yes, Gluten-free Casein-free), and so on. Lactose free does *NOT* mean casein free. Lactose is the milk sugar, and there's an enzyme...
  9. Welcome back!!
  10. as missy's mom noted, sushi rice is made by fanning the rice as a mixture of rice vinegar, sugar, and water is mixed into it, to make it sticky, and slightly sweet. it is gluten free, assuming a restaurant doesn't do something weird to it. but ingredients IN sushi can often have wheat. imitation crab (which is more common than not in california rolls...
  11. from what I have read, and seen here, there isn't a "if you have celiac, you're almost certainly deficient in this". it varies from person to person. while b12, iron, calcium, and magnesium are big hitters, they're just some obvious ones. he can't know without running a blood panel what he's short on, if anything (and it might be none of the above, not...
  12. have you been evaluated for ehlers danlos (the extreme form of hypermobility)? this can definitely cause pain in your joints because your ligaments are too lose to keep your joints together. some supplements can help a bit, but seeing a PT is vital to gain much more muscle strength (and proprioception) to keep the joints properly in place.
  13. I am a big fan of physical sunblocks, rather than chemical sunscreens. Outside of clothing, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are the best ones for this. I like All Terrains Terrasport Sunblock, as it uses both items (they have slightly different absorption spectra), doesn't leave quite the same white sheen that California Baby does, and isn't greasy at all...
  14. fruits and veggies can give you plenty of carbs
  15. Mine's somewhat loud, but not too loud. I have a flat panel monitor mounted to the wall in front of it, hooked up to a gaming system (an old XBOX at the moment) with a speaker system and a converter, so I can play video games if I'm walking or watch DVDs if I'm running, and I've never had a problem hearing things, even at 7mph (which is my fastest sustained...
  16. After doing some research, and figuring out what specs I wanted, I went with a Pro-Form XP 550. It's working great for us, and the grade of up to 10% was important.
  17. magnesium. flax meal. those two definitely affect me!
  18. I developed fibro after being gluten-free (and CF) for a number of years. So if there's anything that could have triggered a flare that you know of, don't discount it. But many other things can be at play, an accidental glutening you're still recovering from, an uncommon manifestation of the flu, a true fibro flare, etc.
  19. you can use hemp protein, rice protein, pea protein. obviously, you'll want to mix in your own other ingredients (I often use coconut milk and fruit, but there's other options) to make it more palatable.
  20. I used to drink kefir back when I was consuming dairy. Loved the stuff. You can also take probiotics in a pill form. I find they help me a bit, but I'm not too far off balance in that area. (I definitely take plenty when I'm on antibiotics.)
  21. ditto what everyone else said - you are quite likely gaining new muscle. based on the activity you list, in a week: * you probably burn about 1000 calories swimming (I estimated about 2 hours total for 3000 yards based on my speed, so this is both ballpark and could be off) * you probably burn about 4000 calories running (it's around 100 calories per...
  22. I have heard that comment once, from someone whom I already know to be unimaginative and unaware of what come out of their mouth. And that person promptly corrected their statement. But if I heard it randomly, without a correction, I'd be very tempted to turn to the person, and with sincerity in my voice say "I'm really sorry that you have such a bad life...
  23. while butter is 'all fat', it's not actually. there's still a small amount of solids - casein and a very very very small amount of lactose in it. so, if you're particularly sensitive to casein, butter is out. in theory, ghee has had all of the solids removed, and should be casein free, but it's a manual process, and it's still something to determine for...
  24. yep, standard CYA statement. one that I will not let stop me from using aleve. as always, we have to make our own decisions, of course.
  25. As you can guess from my sig, I like chocolate. If I were to recommend a few, I'd go with Michel Cluizel (available in some places, most easily at Chocosphere) and Domori (ditto previous parenthetical). Locally, I'll often get Dagoba or Endagered Species (though that is a shared facility - not equipment, facility) or Chocolove or Vosges (also share...
