  1. The choice to have no social life because of the diet is your choice. It's a valid choice, but it is not the only choice. You can separate eating with socializing (even if others are eating!). You don't have to, but I want to encourage you to realize it's a choice, and to make the choice - either way - fulling aware of the fact that you're making that...
  2. I do eat from their food bars fairly often. I usually don't have anything that borders something that would contaminate a neighboring food, but I haven't had a problem. I don't have severe reactions, and have never noticed the serving untensils being moved, however.
  3. congratulations!
  4. what jumps out at me is that it's a lot of carbs - lots and lots. that would cause (an hour after eating), a pretty big blood sugar drop for me, and I'd feel quite nauseous. for me, I need much more balanced meals than that, but again, that's me. it's also a lot of processed foods, which may offer a potential for contamination, or other ingredients your...
  5. I like to remind people that the diet - like absolutely everything in life - is actually a choice. You don't have to do it. But think about the consequences of your choices very carefully. Choosing to run across the freeway is a choice. But the consequences are accepting a very high risk of being hit by a car (or many) going very fast and being smeared...
  6. going to a foreign country doesn't magically make your body treat gluten differently, so treat it the same as you would here - avoid it unless you want to deal with the consequences. it's always a choice; you can deal with the symptoms will cause and damage it may cause if the tradeoff is worth it to you. I wouldn't, given that you can eat gluten free in...
  7. in a case like that, you knew it had gluten, so you simply say, "I really appreciate the effort that went into the meal, but I can't eat it. I'll still enjoy spending time with you guys, though!" And DON'T EAT IT!!!! you do not have to make yourself sick, and do bodily harm to yourself 'to be polite'. in many cases, you don't know. which is why,...
  8. ditto checking with your doc, as there are more complications in adults than children.
  9. while it doesn't have as much fiber, it can be cooked with just hot water at work, which is a big bonus for me.
  10. yoga, hiking, suduko.
  11. like many others, I rarely have cereal for breakfast - it's simply not a terribly well rounded 'food' for the most important meal of the day. (ironically, that's what I had today. ) at closest, I may have quinoa flakes with flax meal and jam (for more protein, fat, and fiber than cereal would provide). otherwise, I'll often have rice cakes or an apple...
  12. We've had a couple posts about great pharmacists who've been very helpful - whether it was right away or later. But it has happened that we've had a couple of recent posts about pharmacists who've said it's not their job to find out whether or not a drug is gluten free, or that there's no way to find out, end of story. Kudos to you, and those you...
  13. There are definitely times when it's easier than others. Five years after making the dietary change = easier. In the middle of a life so packed that you spend nine hours a day at home, and eight of those are spent sleeping = harder. That's been my experience, anyway.
  14. The clouds cleared for us, and we got to see the total eclipse tonight. It was cool! Open Original Shared Link
  15. what's the bracelet made out of? white gold or platinum will be fine in a pool. (I wear my wedding ring and engagement ring on a chain because I don't want to forget them when I go swimming - they're all platinum (they're little) and do just fine.) those metals are non-reactive, particularly if it's a higher karat gold. but it might be worthwhile to call...
  16. breakfast can be fried rice - rice and eggs with some chopped veggies, an apple and peanut butter, a fruit smoothie (coconut milk instead of dairy milk?), homemade muffins...

    ARCHIVED Fat/mental & Celiac?

unfortunately, many doctors are not up to date on celiac disease, or any of the non-immediately-life-threatening medical food issues. they get a couple hours in med school, apparently, from what we've heard by folks training for the field here on the board, to cover nutrition. woo-hoo. :/ the NIH report on celiac disease itself states that being overweight...
  18. I think it'd be kinda cool on the same one, but I'm odd like that.
  19. Hitting a niche market like that might be a bigger draw than you'd think! (That's a guess on my part, but it's worth a shot.) I'd think you'd need to get to know the parents and child first, but a support group leader might be worth a call to find out if parents could use your services as a sitter given that you have experience with the issue(s).
  20. I find I get even more pleasure from planning a meal, cooking it, and sharing it with others now. Maybe it's the added challenge of making it gluten and dairy free (and something that meets the other requirements of my guests), but there's very little that we can't still find a way to make, that the enjoyment is still there for me. Not to mention the pure...
  21. you can try some otc pain meds, ginger tea, and eating easy to digest foods, but mostly you just have to wait these things out. but, it does teach the less to *NEVER* assume *ANYTHING* about foods. *ALWAYS* read the label, EACH AND EVERY TIME.
  22. btw, my "exercise" comment wasn't aimed at weight loss, but rather the process the body goes through in performing exercise itself helps to lower cholesterol, improve the immune system, and repair damage throughout the body. the chemical process triggered by exercise is complex, and entirely outside of any weight loss benefits, it can help significantly...
  23. it's about $8-18 a plate, not including rice. you can do take out, I think, but I've never done it and don't know anyone who'd done it. (you could always call and ask. it's definitely more of a sit down place.) I usually get the lettuce wraps and broccoli and chicken and garlic snap peas.
  24. if the hot chocolate is dairy based, it could be causing the problem. magnesium can also help relieve constipation.
  25. refined rice, corn, potato, and tapioca flours are all higher in carbs, but quinoa, amaranth, millet, buckwheat, teff, montina, seed and nut flours are not - so making your pancakes wisely is a good thing. I'm hypoglycemic, so am careful about my sugar - from what I recall, honey is lower on the glycemic load scale (more useful than glycemic index)...
