ARCHIVED Gluten Free Casein Free And Soy Free
tarnalberry replied to mftnchn's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I'd suggest going to nicer restaurants, particularly seafood or ones that have plenty of vegetarian friendly options, and then start asking the waiter/waitress to work with the chef. In situations that get complex, I say find restaurants that are knowledgeable about their ingredients, and use whole, fresh ingredients, and go in and be flexible about working... -
don't forget - for the next time - that the thing with learning is that it doesn't mean there will come a day when you can be confident there won't ever be a next time. it'll hit you again - there's always going to be something (and probably something that seems dumb at the time, 'cause that's how life is) that puts you over the edge and you grieve it all...

it's a grieving process - and it's fair to accept that it's going to be hard to just give up something (as though it were dead and never again to be a part of your life - 'cause it won't be). it's all the harder when we feel that life should be 'fair' for some reason, and then we see other people getting to eat it. the 'well, then why can't I? that's not...

ARCHIVED Help! Terrible Migraines! Topomax Contains Gluten!
tarnalberry replied to IndigoRose's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Per the Open Original Shared Link list, last updated 12/07 (and per my call to the company over a year ago), Topomax is gluten free. Where did you find out otherwise - in something that was other than a CYA statement? (I'm also on it as a migraine prophylaxis.) -
ARCHIVED Lifelong (under)weight Problem.. Gluten To Blame?
tarnalberry replied to rhubarbarin's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Those are all common symptoms. You should probably be tested for it. -
ARCHIVED Fertility Awareness Method Vs Birth Control
tarnalberry replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Do be careful of spermicides. Nonoxyl-9, the most common one, has the potential to be an extreme irritant. Don't get me wrong, I am quite glad that it works for plenty of people - the more options, the better! - but it can become irritating at any point, so just keep in mind what the options are. It's definitely something worth taking time to research... -

ARCHIVED Fertility Awareness Method Vs Birth Control

We've done FAM+condoms just fine for ... five years. I'd encourage you to get your testosterone levels tested (I think I posted that research article on one of your threads). But 'perfect use' rates for condoms are really fairly high. Do everything right (don't use expired ones, don't expose them to heat, don't use oil or silicon lubes on them - which... -
ARCHIVED Migraines
tarnalberry replied to jeanbean's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm one of the few unlucky ones on the board who did *not* have his/her migraines go away when he/she went gluten-free, so it doesn't happen for *everyone*. -
ARCHIVED Natural Flavors
tarnalberry replied to pugluver31902's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
In theory, you should call to check on it. I've almost never heard of it containing anything other than wheat, and now that wheat has to be labled, it hardly pops up as a problem, but it can happen, so it may well be worth your time to call on. -
ARCHIVED Help I'm 18 And Alergic To Dairy And Gluten
tarnalberry replied to dixiedelight01's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
you're definitely not alone. lots of us have those restrictions. you'll find that it does get easier with time, but the learning curve is rough. browse online for recipes, check out the recipe section here, go to your library looking for cookbooks, and think about what kinds of things you'd like to make that you can cook from scratch. there are... -
ARCHIVED How Do You Organize Your Kitchen?
tarnalberry replied to Wonka's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Anything shared is gluten free. So, there's a cutting board, behind which hides the toaster (I don't bother with a toaster), that my husband uses for all his wheat-y goodness. There's one shelf (up high in a cupboard I can't reach) for his granola bars, cereal, crackers, and oatmeal. That's it. Everything else is gluten free. Of course, we don't do lots... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Bar Suggestions, Please?
tarnalberry replied to Ridgewalker's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
all the bars have oats - which are almost certainly not from an uncontaminated source. the sunrise bars have barley, and are right out. the tea cakes have oats, and say they have traces of dairy (though I'm not sure from where). they're sport line looks fine, aside from the smoothie, which has dairy. and, of course, you might want to check on the natural... -
A recent study suggests that vitamin D supplementation via supplements or diet (anything other than sunlight) - even for the deficient - may not be all it's cracked up to be. Open Original Shared Link Of course, if you are in a high enough latitude that you *can't* generate D from sunlight, and are unwilling to go to a tanning salon (not that they're...

ARCHIVED I'm Pissed!
tarnalberry replied to marinewife's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We were at the store yesterday getting me some orange juice. (I'm sick... it's pretty much the only time I drink juice, and I have to be pretty darn sick to drink juice...) On the walk to the store, my husband and I were talking about soup, as he's getting sick too, and we like to have chicken soup when we're sick, but I hate cooking when I'm sick, especially... -
there's no way to know for sure - it depends on how much damage you had, how fast you heal, where they biopsy, how they read it, etc. quite frankly, I'd either insist on the biopsy for them (if you need a biopsy-generated diagnosis for some reason), or try them on the diet and see if there are any changes for them. the dietary challenge is a valid diagnostic...

ARCHIVED How Does Everyone Feel When They Cheat?
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
if it makes you feel any better, you're actually quite normal for cheating. studies suggest that more than half of celiacs do cheat - this board isn't quite representative as we've got a bunch of people here being proactive about keeping themselves informed and healthy. but cheating, even as infrequently as once a month, keeps your body from healing,... -
ARCHIVED Have You Ever
tarnalberry replied to dbmamaz's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
what's odd is, I've got a whole swath of health issues, and use the health services... often. I've never been called a hypochondriac, and have only gotten a "uh... you're barkin' up the *wrong* tree" once (with candida - not GI related, and I don't blame the doc in that particular case). and I've not even been recommended for antidepressants until recently... -
I've been to the ER three times - three different ER's - all fairly minor. Once for stitches on my finger (and the nurse didn't want to believe me at first that she didn't fully numb my finger, but she did eventually), once for what was likely a kidney stone (and everyone was great, even though they were quite busy and there was a fairly long wait), and...

I use ShiKai's shampoo and conditioner, and am quite happy with it. Definitely need the conditioner in the winter, though.

I don't know if it's the same. In the US, I'd say to look for someone who was a member of the American Association of Allergists and Immunologists. I can't quite find the analogy in Canada. I'd think a respirologist would be appropriate, but it seems like your asthma is still not under control...

ARCHIVED I'm Pissed!
tarnalberry replied to marinewife's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
the reason that not every single minor ingredient (less than a particular percentage) has to be labeled (outside of the allergen labeling laws) is to protect a manufacturers proprietary information (the ingredients/recipe of their products). not saying it's not a problem for us, but that's the reason they fight it. (that, and because they will change from... -
if one dose of your rescue meds don't help, a second dose - two hours or so later - is generally what docs recommend. as your asthma has worsened, I would hope that you're on some sort of daily treatment that (like advair or singular - it sounds like you have them, but do you take them regularly?), until you improve? if you find that you have a severe attack...

ARCHIVED Labeled G-f But Made In Factory W/ Wheat!
tarnalberry replied to stellarpink182's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Things will be marked gluten-free (or wheat-free) as long as there are no gluten (or wheat) containing ingredients. Manufacturing lines are expensive, and are very very often shared for many different products at some point in the manufacturing process. There are, however, strict controls on cleaning between batches of different foods. Additionally, manufacturing... -
ARCHIVED New Movie Suggestions?
tarnalberry replied to Molecular Dude's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
My friends saw Juno and really liked it. The last movie I saw in a theater was Sweeney Todd, and while it wasn't a comedy, and was definitely bloody, it was a very good movie! If you can find it, I highly recommend Into the Wild, which also isn't a comedy, and might be better left as a rental at home, maybe even after reading the book, but is a visually...
