beans, lentils, gluten-free whole grains, vegetables (lots of those!), flax meal is good in lots of things, and the like. starchy stuff screws with my blood sugar, so I can't have it anyway... :/

if you're going to say that something isn't in a product, you have to document it. if, in the case of rBGH, it's something that has to be added, and you can merely document that it's not been added, then there's that. if, in the case of gluten on non-dedicated lines, it's something that has be tested for, it CANNOT BE 0PPM. that is not a testable requirement...

ARCHIVED Tough Choice's Setting Kitchen Rules!
tarnalberry replied to larry mac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
hopefully it was just a dynamic that caused the fight, and you guys will work out that one. my husband practically volunteered to stop baking (and he doesn't like my muffins or cookies), because of the cleaning and flour in the air issue (I'm the celiac, he's the gluten-lover)... -
ARCHIVED So What Exactly Is Wrong With Me
tarnalberry replied to Sandi*'s topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
yes, IgA deficiency can lead to misinterpreted results, because you don't have the same 'maximum' if you're IgA deficient, and a number of the celiac blood tests are IgA tests. -
they're your friends. just tell them that it's a stressful time, and that you just don't have the mental reserves to deal with the risk, or even the thought of the risk, of contamination. tell them that you're going to bring your own stuff, to make it easier. tell them - if they seem skeptical - that you realize it might seem a bit paranoid, but that there...

some types of contrast have a basis from shellfish, so if you have a shellfish sensitivity, that may be an issue. the iodine may also be at play.

candida is a yeast, so antibiotics (which kills bacteria) do not affect it. by killing the good bacteria in the intestines (along with the bad bacteria elsewhere in the body), there is more 'floor space' or 'real estate' for the yeast to grow. when the antibiotics are stopped, there's essentially a race to populate the space available, and the bad bacteria...

ARCHIVED Aghhhhhh! Gas Prices
tarnalberry replied to blueeyedmanda's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
We have to get 92 octane, so I paid $3.80/gal yesterday. Regular unleaded was, I think, $3.55/gal. Pretty sure it'll hit $4 before June. Europe pays so much more, and it helps keep me aware of being efficient about diving, carpooling, and alternative transportation. -
ARCHIVED Restless Leg Syndrome And Celiac Disease
tarnalberry replied to JenniferRH's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
that is a good point - they ran a number of blood tests on me before concluding it was RLS, including iron and b12. -
ARCHIVED Low Oxalate Diet -need Advice
tarnalberry replied to a ditmars's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I had a very hard time keeping my blood sugar levels from dropping on the low-oxalate diet, actually. hypoglycemia can cause those symptoms, but it can be something else. you can give them supplemental calcium citrate to help bind with the oxalates in their system as they're passed out, iirc. (you'll probably want to look that up more, though.) -
ARCHIVED Shopping Anywhere But Wegmans & Whole Foods Frustration!
tarnalberry replied to FlourShopGirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
carrots and hummus. apples and peanut butter. eggs on corn tortillas. I generally stick to things that are naturally gluten free, and it's a lot easier. -
ARCHIVED Disease Making Me Feel Isolated
tarnalberry replied to Mac20elle's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh, I wouldn't go during lunch rush, unless it's to a place where I know what I'm going to order ahead of time and have been there before during a less busy time. Homework is now necessary. (Yeah, annoying, but doable.) As for the "not that big of a deal" attitude... you can make it both important, and not a big deal at the same time. And ignore... -
ARCHIVED Disease Making Me Feel Isolated
tarnalberry replied to Mac20elle's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Part of coping with this, imho, is the attitude adjustment that comes with changing your expectations. It takes time, but if you don't *EXPECT* eating to be a part of socializing, it becomes easier to let go of the disappointment. (Really, that "lower your expectations" advice I got from my boss at work years ago applies in so many places. ) And you... -
ARCHIVED Restless Leg Syndrome And Celiac Disease
tarnalberry replied to JenniferRH's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
long after I went gluten free and moderated my carbs significantly to keep from having troubles with hypoglycemia, I developed restless leg issues. mine is likely related to fibromyalgia, and a low dose of mirapex keeps it in check for me. but - as you can see, everyone's experience is different. -
ARCHIVED Hypoglycemia With Celiac
tarnalberry replied to jennyofmany's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I was hypoglycemic before gluten-free (and before I needed to be gluten-free, as far as I can tell). I have not noticed a difference in how my hypoglycemia goes with the gluten-free diet (or CF for that matter), but as long as I keep my meals well balanced (30/30/40 is ideal for me), I generally experience no symptoms and can go for many hours (5+) without... -

tarnalberry replied to jerseyangel's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I guess I'm blunt. I just put "no gifts please". -
ARCHIVED Jelly Bean/candy Help!
tarnalberry replied to blondebombshell's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
jelly bellies are fine; rice crispies are right out due to barley malt. -
ARCHIVED Immitation Crab
tarnalberry replied to fatcat11188's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
check out the ingredients on a package of imitation crab the next time you're at the grocery store - you'll find wheat starch on the list. some times you can get california rolls with real crab meat (it's not raw) that's also quite tasty, but it's very hit or miss where you can get that stuff. -
ARCHIVED Attention Tarnalberry
tarnalberry replied to BamBam's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
and that doesn't work in a non-trivial portion of the US in the months of (approximately) october through march. (there's not enough UV, even on a sunny day, for the body to produce vitD at high latitudes because of the tilt of the earth and the amount of atmosphere the sun's going through at that point.) the comparison to the sun is one of the reasons... -
ARCHIVED Attention Tarnalberry
tarnalberry replied to BamBam's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
yay! I'm glad to hear your scores are up! keep up with that walking, and someday, you'll find all your friends - of your age - wonder how you can be so young. that reminds me that my chiropractor mentioned an article to me recently about a couple of doctors suggesting much larger supplementation of vit D - on the 2000 to 4000 IU/day range. don... -
I would talk to your doctor about it. Sometime similar happened to a coworker who had developed nasal polyps, but it didn't come on suddenly, so I don't mean to imply it is the same thing. (The lack of smell, though, probably explains the flat tastes.) Combined with the dizziness, however, it strikes me as being worthy of a trip to the doctor, out of concern...

A lot of people seem to note that they get a lot of grief from other people - not just family, but friends, acquaintances, and people they meet for the first time - about being gluten free. I never really understood this, as I haven't experienced this much at all; certainly not the suggestion that I was wrong, and never anything more than questioning about...

ARCHIVED celiac disease Affecting My Career
tarnalberry replied to cdog7's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
don't just talk to them about what you think is wrong, but how you're going to find a solution to no longer have it affect your work. they may kinda care about you, but they really care about the work you need to get done. -
ARCHIVED Other Non Safe Products
tarnalberry replied to MELINE's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
another thing to remember is that the symptoms you feel do *not* directly correlate to how much damage occurs to your gut. you may have chronic, very low levels of damage that affect your risk factors for complications, but not feel much. that's another reason why it's important to be very cautious, even when you're not feeling symptoms. -
ARCHIVED Venting. Celiac Disease Is Impossible To Manage.
tarnalberry replied to Bravie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If they are TRULY self-absorbed, you may not be able to get them to understand. You can try having your doctor write a note to them, and see if that does any good. Given that you are over 18, however, consider that your mom doesn't actually have the power to say you can or cannot live somewhere. Yes, she can take away financial support for college...
