ARCHIVED 2 Year Old Needs Help
tarnalberry replied to cnh's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
was a total IgA test done? with those results, your child could well be IgA deficient, in which case those specific IgA test results wouldn't help you pin down a celiac diagnosis. -
I don't have DH, and I'm sure others who do will respond with some great advice, but thought I'd have a go based on what I've read. Do carefully check anything that goes in your mouth or on your skin for gluten and the hidden varieties of gluten. It's SO easy to overlook something that we usually don't think about. And, I've read, iodine is important...

ARCHIVED Help With Mood
tarnalberry replied to Tutahl75's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
A couple standard non-medication routes: exercise, something somewhat vigorous 8 hours of sleep - no over or under sleeping eating well - not excessively heavy on the carbs or excessively low fat meditation or some quiet-mind activity behavioral and cognitive therapy (not necessarily at a psych's office, of course) The exercise is important, as the endorphins... -
This is the problem with testing dairy - there are two potential aggrivators, lactose and casein. Ideally, to test for lactose intolerance only, without having your doctor test you, you would simply try taking Lactaid (or any lactase supplement) before consuming a dairy product. That would put the appropriate enzyme to digest lactose in your system before...

ARCHIVED How To Deal With Family Members That Don't Believe
tarnalberry replied to Roxyk's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would say that it's time to realize that you can't get through to her (some people are stubborn that way), and that nothing she offers you to eat is guaranteed to be safe. In your house, you have every right to decline that she brings anything, so you can even tell her to scratch the salad. You know what you have to do to stay healthy, and what she thinks... -
ARCHIVED 5 Yr. Old Daughter, Possible Diagnosis
tarnalberry replied to maryliz's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Welcome to the board. Depending on your normal cooking style, a gluten-free diet may or may not be easy to jump into full force, but the celiac.com site has some great lists of safe/unsafe food. Even the most well prepared of us make mistakes at times too, so don't feel too bad when you make a slip. It's great that you've found something that will make... -
ARCHIVED Roast Beef In Crockpot
tarnalberry replied to adeboer's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
yep, to make a good stock, you need to have bones in there. and you don't want the highest quality meat because you want to pull the fat and collagen out of there. (that's what makes real stock gel when you put it in the fridge - the collagen that's been simmered out of the bones and cartilage during the hours it's one the stove.) since beef can be a stronger... -
ARCHIVED Tests
tarnalberry replied to HeatherMelissa's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I believe the fifth test you're thinking of is EMA. (most docs only do anti-gliandina IgA and IgG, but there are also anti-reticulin IgA and IgG that are sometimes included in the panel, though less often than they were in the past, with the advent of the tTg test) -
ARCHIVED I Need Help On What I Can And Cant Eat
tarnalberry replied to kayti's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Until 2006, when companies have to start labeling allergens, you have to call the company if "modified food starch" appears in the ingredients. (This doesn't hold true for the companies that have a policy of listing gluten containing ingredients, like Kraft.) -
ARCHIVED This May Well Be The Answer
tarnalberry replied to red345's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
you absolutely can "just get" celiac at age 50. while you may always have the genes for it, it is commonly accepted that a trigger occurs that causes that gene to be expressed. that means, until it's triggered, there is not immune reaction to gluten, though it can develop at any time. -
ARCHIVED Baby/ Child Diagnosed?
tarnalberry replied to azedazobollis's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
since, _technically_ celiac disease is _defined_ as being flattened villi from gluten exposure, most doctors will only take a biopsy as rock solid proof of celiac disease. doesn't really matter though - if she's gluten-intolerant, she needs to be gluten-free for life. -
ARCHIVED Is A Little Gluten Ever Alright?
tarnalberry replied to szl-mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Nope. It's a chemical reaction in the body - an immune system molecule sees a gluten molecule and goes off on it's merry way attacking the villi. Your child may or may not experience outward symptoms from a very small amount of gluten, but there's no reason to intentially risk it. -
ARCHIVED Aleive
tarnalberry replied to jaycee30's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Naproxyn sodium is my anti-inflammatory of choice, and generic prescription strength pills give my stomach a what-for, so I go with over the counter stuff in a high enough dosage. I called the manufacturer of Aleve and they had the standard CYA statement: we don't put gluten in, but we can't guarantee the purity of the ingredients we get from suppliers.... -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Results
tarnalberry replied to Niteyx13's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
my only positive was a weak anti-reticulin IgG positive. you could be IgA deficient, depending on which IgA that was... and since you'd been gluten-free for so long, who knows! -
ARCHIVED Crispy Herb Baked Chicken
tarnalberry replied to Mom22's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've opted not to bake with wheat period. The stuff gets in the air and takes a while to settle. Heck, I stay out of the kitchen when my husband bakes. gluten-free baked goods taste just fine, and if he doesn't want to make his own muffins, he can just share mine. :-) -
My husband still eats his gluten containing items (bread, cereal, crackers), but most of the foods we regularly eat are naturally gluten free anyway. (Stir-fries, stew, soup, tacos, fajitas, grilled or baked meats, veggies, etc.) He's very picky about food, so giving up bread and cereal just isn't an option. Besides, it's not really fair, assuming he can...

ARCHIVED Flavoured Teas
tarnalberry replied to campcour's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yep, I've had many "glue tea bag" companies tell me that they do NOT use gluten. Never found one that did. richard, I think you're right that the "glue" would dissolve in water if it were made from wheat. -
ARCHIVED Flavoured Teas
tarnalberry replied to campcour's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
yep, if it says "natural flavor", I call. -
ARCHIVED What Is Your Best Gf Food Item You Have Found?
tarnalberry replied to Mom22's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well, most of what I get is naturally gluten free, other than rice pastas... I don't think I had tried Thai Kitchen's Chili Paste until I went gluten-free, and that's been a big hit with the husband... -
ARCHIVED Article: Hold The Oats For Celiac Disease?
tarnalberry replied to angel-jd1's topic in Publications & Publicity
That's my theory - some people's immune system response is general enough to react to avenin as well. -
celiac disease was identified long before the flu vaccine was available.

ARCHIVED Tests, Frustrations, Unknowns
tarnalberry replied to kitchenofdanger's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
yep, a week isn't long enough. try being _strictly_ gluten-free for a month or two (or three!) and then have a lot of wheat at one time. (the purest type of wheat is best - bread has eggs, yeast, and so on that you could also react to. plain pasta or bulgar is a good thing to try to see if you react.) -
ARCHIVED Help! How Strict?!
tarnalberry replied to katrinca's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
yeah, you do have to call spice companies, and I stay away from "seasoning" all together though not all of them have the problem. (pure spices I have yet to find contaminated.) of course, dehydrating your own is tastier! :-) -
It's totally individual, once you call the manufacturer and rule out gluten in the pill (the vast majority of them are gluten-free, but it's always best to check). As for whether or not you'll feel better - it's TOTALLY individual and depends on your body. Heck, it depends on your body at the time. I was on BC for three years or so, and overall, I felt...
