  1. I don't have any ideas, but want to encourage you to keep up with the doctors, and find a nephrologist (kidney-specialist) if you haven't been to one and think that would help. If your current doctor isn't helping, don't hesitate to find a second, or third, opinion on the issue. You could consider eliminating likely food allergens to see if that helps the...
  2. I don't know if you want to rely on my memory for this one :-D but I called Butterball while on a business trip once (since that's the brand of turkey I picked up to cook with that night), and they said that they always label wheat - the way Kraft does.
  3. For me, it takes 15-30 minutes to start noticing symptoms (head) and about half a day for the rest of them (digestive).
  4. There's a Whole Foods Market down below that freeway whose name I can't remember, and a PF Changs very near the University. Check both places websites for the addresses.
  5. It can, but the stress can too. If you think you may be celiac disease, and there's a nontrivial chance you are, since your son is, I would encourage you to stick to the diet for a while and see if it helps. There may be other things causing your back problems as well, but if you are gluten intolerant, you need to stop eating gluten. Fill your home with...
  6. If you're just lactose intolerant, you can try adding dairy back in after a few months (so your intestines have time to heal, and the villia (the tips of which produce lactase) can do their thing again), or try using lactaid - a supplement of lactase that allows you to digest the milk sugar. (Unfortunately, there isn't any such thing for the milk protein...
  7. Because manufacturing can change at any time, your best bet is to call the company who produced it directly. You may need to call your pharmacist, if it's a generic, to find out the company who manufactured the one you have.
  8. There was a "rumor" about a company that used wheat in the fortification added to its rice, but I've never seen the source. I've not heard of any company confirm the use of wheat in any manner in rice, but when in doubt, do call the company. (Lundberg Farms says that theirs is gluten-free, I know that much, but they are often pricey.)
  9. Doh! Caseinate means "not CF". I've just recently gone Gluten-free Casein-free, and am being fairly hard core on the CF portion of it (even though I don't know that I need to be), and finding that whatever going gluten-free didn't eliminate, in the way of processed foods, going CF pretty much gets the rest of them! :-/
  10. Honestly, I think the cloudy-headedness is the opiate effect of the gluten when it hits the brain. It's just like high doses of codeine, which is also an opiate.
  11. Unfortunately, it's a good thing that you're paranoid! We have to be! (I know every time I stop being paranoid, I get glutened! :-) ) You're best bet is to always call the company, of course. Someone has reported that Splenda is gluten-free - the main portion of the product absolutely is (it's just an isomer of table sugar), and they do not appear to...
  12. I'm glad I just misread your post, and that you'll do what you need to do to keep yourself healthy! I know it can be tough when people don't believe you, but you're right that we're not supposed to feel crappy! :-) Most allergists will tell you that if you have a wheat allergy (which is an immune response mediated by the IgE molecule), you'd have itchy...
  13. From what I hear, you'll find Italy to be very accomodating. You might try doing some searches of italian websites, but learning the words for dealing with gluten over there should be enough to get you the appropriate food. (I wasn't gluten-free when I was last there, so I can't help further. Hopefully some of those who have been there recently will pop...
  14. kimp, welcome. I just wanted to give some reassurance that - like any other major change in our lives - this is one that, with time, you can adapt to. I sometimes find it interesting (now that I've been gluten-free for a year) that we (and I am definitely including myself in this issue) find going gluten-free to be such a change. There are cultures who...
  15. I'm sorry to hear about your mom. That's awful. You might want to check with your doc to find out what blood tests he's running, just to "be sure" ;-) (BTW, Diverticulosis and IBS - while often causes simlar symptoms - are different, so if you're concerned about the former, make sure they don't settle for the latter diagnosis! Open Original Shared...
  16. The reason Kraft told you that is because they have a policy of labeling ANY source of an allergen. So if a natural/artificial flavor contains wheat, it will say so in parenthesis after "natural flavor" or the like. If they hold true to their own policy, you CAN just read their labels. (But this is why they aren't so helpful on the phone.)
  17. It was identified over a hundred years ago, but it seems that the US is WAY behind the curve in accurately diagnosing people. They tested back then, but almost exclusively in failure-to-thrive infants, and even then patients were never told it was a life long thing. Only in the past 5-10 years, since the advent of blood tests, has there been an improvement...
  18. You can do a dietary challenge without doing a strict elimination diet, and that sounds pretty much like exactly what you've done. You eliminate the potentially offending food for a while, then reintroduce it, and see how you feel. (You are "challenging" your body with that food." This is considered part of a formal diagnosis of celiac disease, by the...
  19. If you know the answer to the question ("Am I gluten-intolerant or not?"), and are having trouble with your family causing you to doubt what you know to be true, then I would suggest working having the confidence to believe in yourself. I know that this probably isn't the answer you wanted to hear, but having people question you on this will happen ... unfortunately...
  20. But what else can elevated IgG represent? I've "heard" the same thing, but have still not seen one single thing other than celiac that elevated anti-gliandin and anti-reticulin IgG can represent. I'd really like to find the follow up to that one! ;-)
  21. If the company can't give you any assurance, I wouldn't risk it.
  22. Technically, gluten is a generic term for any protein in a grain. So, the protein that corn has, is *technically* called gluten. But we commonly use gluten (around here, particularly, to refer to wheat, rye, barley, and oat gluten specifically. Corn gluten is fine for celiacs (who don't also have a corn intolerance ;-) ).
  23. Colgate makes a whitener/sensitivity toothpaste, but as whiteners can INCREASE sensitivity, I had to look hard for one that did NOT contain whiteners. Crest makes one.
  24. if you find your symptoms not going away, you might want to take out the soy, and then the corn. soy is a fairly common problem, and corn can be too, depending on your particular system. good luck! I hope you find what's bothering you!
  25. that's true! I sorta assumed you were taking plenty of viatmins. the B's definitely help, though I've been fine with oral and not needed to go with shots (best to take them with food, of course)
