ARCHIVED Does It Ever Feel Like Too Much?
tarnalberry replied to beelzebubble's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I thought I'd chime in, even though I'm the endless optimist. I also don't have it nearly as bad as other people. My diagnosis isn't confirmed, I also have a testosterone deficiency and may need to investigate whether or not I have a thyroid problem. I have asthma that isn't horrible, but limits some of my activities. I have bad knees that have stopped... -
ARCHIVED Deducting Food From Taxes
tarnalberry replied to SofiEmiMom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Maybe someone can clarify this for me, but I think that if the gluten-free food goes into the medical deductions, you can only deduct gluten-free food if your medical deductions are high enough. (I forget the exact percentage of your income, but it's something like 10%?) -
Just one comment on the test using a thermometer - the question of whether or not it is under 98.0 on waking is a little more tricky for women. It may well be normal for a woman to have her temp a bit below 98.0 upon waking before she ovulates and produces much progesterone in the cycle. Also, you can get digital basal body temperature thermometers that...

ARCHIVED Will I Test Positive On A Gf Diet?
tarnalberry replied to snapturtle's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Being gluten-free may well mess up a blood test. The blood test is looking for antibodies to gluten - your body's reaction to the protein. If you haven't been having any gluten, there's nothing for your body to react to, hence no proteins. (Ok, that's an oversimplification, the levels of antibodies will decline over time, not instantly drop to zero, but... -
I've put on a bit, but it might be from not exercising as much either. Plus, I think my lower metabolism from when I was eating wheat may play a role. (A bit here is 6 pounds in 6 months. But I'm having trouble getting it off.)

ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerance Vs. Celiac Disease?
tarnalberry replied to sroggio's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have vulvar vestibulitis myself. My specialist (Dr. Willems at the Scripps Clinic in La Jolla) noted he wasn't surprised when initial testing made it likely that I had it. He said he has a lot of patients who are gluten intolerant. (He treats VVS with antihistamines, estrace, and biofeedback with physical therapy.) While my blood tests for celiac were... -
ARCHIVED Fiber
tarnalberry replied to YankeeDB's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I find that if you just stick to whole foods, and pick high fiber ones, there's no problem getting 30g a day (on a 1500 cal/day diet). Quinoa is nice and high in fiber. Dried fruit is as well (and you don't have to go with prunes - in fact, dates are higher in fiber). Soy nuts have a fair amount of fiber in them as well. Kidney beans are also a good source... -
I'm with filititi. The quinoa pasta is great. I fed it to a bunch of non-gluten-free friends who loved it too.

ARCHIVED Wheat Grass, Is It Ok?
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The thing is, in theory, by the time the wheat has FULLY sprouted, the gluten has been used up in the plant's metabolic process. It's a spectrum, with the grain being smack full of gluten, and the grass itself not having any - according to chemical tests. I, however, am a chicken, and won't ingest wheat grass myself. :-) Theory's great, for the theorists... -
ARCHIVED Can Anyone Help
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
just a quick note... if he's eating meat, have him drink a glass of orange juice with it - the vit C makes it easier to absorb more iron from food. -
ARCHIVED Macaroni And Cheese
tarnalberry replied to Cait6799's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Quinoa pasta (quinoa/corn mix) is tasty enough to eat straight up. -
ARCHIVED Cornmeal Question
tarnalberry replied to VAGuy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
lol. your pumpkin pie spice is almost as old as I am. (unfortunately, not too long ago, I think I threw out some stuff (unused) that was about the same age... ;-) ) just for reference, technically speaking, "gluten" is the term for all proteins in grains. it's often used by the general population and celiacs and doctors to refer only to the protein... -
With so many comments on difficulty finding stuff to eat, and on in particular noting that he/she (I forgot :-( ) likes dip with veggies, I thought I'd post what we had for our SuperBowl party. Everyone but my husband and I were vegetarian, and I'm the only celiac, but everyone loved it: Salsa Fresca 4 tomatoes, seeded and diced 1 small red onion, diced...

ARCHIVED Diseases Related To Celiac?
tarnalberry replied to robic's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Some women have also found a link between celiac and vulvodynia. -
just to note, I mean whole millet - not millet flour. cook up the grains (per instructions) just like rice.

ARCHIVED Grainaissance Amazakes And Mochi
tarnalberry replied to tonileet's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Definitely don't take my word for it, but I read an article addressing the use of sprouts and grasses from forbidden grains. It stated that the grain (seed) itself has gluten (lots of it), the grasses from it don't, and the sprouts in the middle lie on a spectrum. In the process of growing the grass blade, the protein is metabolized and by the completion... -
ARCHIVED Tamari
tarnalberry replied to willamina's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Some tamari is made with wheat, but some isn't. (The only tamari I've seen made with wheat is one verson from San-J, but they make a non-wheat version too.) Essentially it is _the same_ as soy sauce, but made with a slightly different process to ferment the soy beans. It uses alcohol (I believe San-J's is corn based, but not positive on that) instead... -
To a degree, yeah, I know what you're saying. My personal history of loss means that the answer I'd give to "how long it takes" is totally useless for ya :-) but I can say, don't forget that grieving is cyclical. Just because you go through the process once, doesn't mean that some other milestone in your life won't trigger it again. I don't know your age...

One thing to keep in mind - if you have celiac, you are not allergic, you are intolerant. Meaning not that your body goes through an IgE antibody mediated process to produce histamine and inflammation, but that your body goes through an IgG and IgA (if you're not deficient) mediated process that destroys the lining of your intestines. One molecule of any...

ARCHIVED I've Been Told Diff Things By Diff Doctors!
tarnalberry replied to willamina's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Lol! That's a question without an answer. Or rather, it has a really long answer with a lot of different things. Not to mention that a LOT of celiacs do not have normal symptoms. (I didn't.) While weight loss and diarreah and abdominal pain are listed as common symptoms, some people have no physical symptoms and just mental ones (brain fog, irritability... -
ARCHIVED New To This...

try looking for vegan recipes, but really, you don't need anything to replace the cheese. just layer the noodles, tomato sauce, and veggies, and enjoy! -
ARCHIVED Absolute Relaltion Of Gluten To Celiac Disease
tarnalberry replied to centeron's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
if you're sensitive to wheat, but not barley or rye or oats, perhaps you just have a wheat allergy? it's rather common, and just because it's called an "allergy" doesn't mean the symptoms are sneezing and watery eyes! ;-) -
ARCHIVED Traveling To L Os Angeles
tarnalberry replied to irish's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Don't worry too much. There are more restaurants than you can shake a stick at in LA, and more health conscious, special diet options than you might think. Can be tricky to find them, but some web searches will help. For starters, there's a PF Changs (they have a gluten-free menu) at the Beverly Center (121 N. La Cienega Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA... -
ARCHIVED Need Help Or Answers?
tarnalberry replied to MindyP's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Assuming your doctor did the right tests, which is a HUGE assumption, you may still have a false negative. And that's EVEN if he/she was being generous reading the results. (For instance, four out of my five tests came back "negative" - the lab doesn't have a quantitative number. Only my antireticulin IgG (I think) came back positive. Not exactly a classic... -
ARCHIVED Help For A Newbie To All This Finding Gf Foods.
tarnalberry replied to Gojo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
For me, I find it much easier (not to mention healthier) to stay away from almost anything that I haven't made myself. Including anything in a snack machine. :-) I know, I know... that's more easily said than done for some people depending on all sorts of circumstances. I just feel wary about companies changing their ingredients or processing before I...
