ARCHIVED Anyone In The Lehigh Valley, Pa?

I'm not sure how far you're willing to drive, but I went to a GI specialist in Paoli, PA. I got his name off this website. His name is Dr. Keith Laskin. That may be too far of a drive for you, but here's his info: Keith Laskin, M.D. Main Line Gastroenterology Paoli Memorial Medical Building 3 Suite 333 255 West Lancaster Ave Paoli, PA 19301...
  2. Thanks guys. Lunch today was a little gluten-free soup, a banana, and applesauce. I'm sure I'll be hungry later, but I want everything to calm down as much as possible. I know it's just a waiting game at this point! Yay.
  3. Heather - I've had that happen once or twice. I would say just watch to be sure you're not bleeding often because that can't be healthy. The color can give you an indication of where the bleeding is happening - if it's bright red, it's lower down; if it's dark in color, it's happening higher up. I would be more worried about bleeding higher up because...
  4. I'm on a business trip and must have eaten something with gluten yesterday, because today I'm SO sick. D, cramps, growling, etc. Taking Pepto did nothing. I have to be able to sit in seminars all week without spending half the day in the bathroom. Any advice?
  5. I guess this USANA company is kind of like Avon - you go to parties to buy their products. They claim to treat all kinds of stuff, including helping celiacs recover from their symptoms. Has anyone heard of this or have any info to pass along? Thanks!
  6. I think he's mainly wary because I'm trying to follow this diet to the letter without much "real" evidence that it's effective or healthy. Of course, all I have to go on is the book and the testimony of people who follow it. He seems to think it's like a cult or something - like I've been brainwashed into following the SCD! But it's not my fault that there...
  7. From the article: "When somebody presents with severe diarrhea and wasting, that means most of the small intestine is damaged and it is not able to compensate for the damage closer to the stomach. So it is the amount of the small intestine that is damaged which determines the symptoms. If you have all of the small intestine damaged you'll have diarrhea...
  8. I think this diet is really helping me, but it's hard sometimes because my husband argues with me about what I should be eating or not eating. On our road trip this past weekend we had a big fight about it and when am I going to start reintroducing foods and various debates about the science behind it - I got frustrated and that's when I decided to eat a...
  9. I went on a road trip this weekend and had some no-nos at McD's - what a mistake! I wonder how many days I'll be paying for it.....
  10. Here's the custard recipe that uses yogurt instead of DCCC: 2 1/2 cups homemade yogurt 1/3 cup honey 5 eggs, beaten pinch of salt 2 1/2 tsp SCD legal vanilla Bake at 350 F (180 C) for 30-35 min. in a water bath (pan with water). I got it off scdiet.org. Haven't tried it though - let me know if you try it and like it! I've had the...
  11. Yeah, Farmer's cheese must be gaining in popularity. When I asked for it at my store, they said "People keep asking for that." And they keep it well stocked - but I can't tell if that's my doing or not. I do tend to buy 6 or 8 packages at a time. I believe you can make custard out of yogurt if you can't find the Farmer's cheese. I know I saw a recipe...
  12. Heather - overall, I am feeling much better. I've made more progress in the last three months than I made in my two years of being gluten-free (during which I made very little progress towards getting symptom free). The days of really bad gas are over - I haven't had that problem in weeks. My BMs are still loose sometimes, but the frequency has cut WAY...
  13. Are ALL Tropicana juices non-gluten-free? Even their orange juice?
  14. This is unrelated to the above- but I seem to be having some kind of relapse. I haven't added anything new to the diet, but my bowels seem to be out of sorts again. Frustrating because I had about two weeks of feeling really good - and then a bad week again! Maybe it's due to the stress of starting a new job and totally unrelated to food. Has anyone...
  15. Are you able to find Farmer's cheese in your store? This is my breakfast staple. I mix some Farmer's cheese with honey and then mix in whatever fruit I have on hand. I've had this every morning since I started the diet 3 months ago and I'm still not tired of it! If you're a peanut butter fan, top some fruit (bananas or apples are my fav) with peanut...
  16. I don't think it can hurt to try. Energy hasn't been a problem for me. I nibble constantly though, so that probably helps!
  17. Hi, I'm also on the Specific Carb Diet. I'm finally seeing a decrease in symptoms for the first time since I started feeling sick years ago. I would encourage you to try it for a few weeks and see how you feel. Your body will tell you whether the diet is right for you or not. About the yogurt - I think taking a probiotic will reap the same benefits...
  18. I'm addicted to peanut butter, so here's hoping that will eventually help!....
  19. For the peanut butter muffins, I modified a recipe from pecanbread.com (the one for cashew butter muffins). Here it is: 1 cup peanut butter 2 ripe bananas 2 eggs 1/2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp vinegar Blend everything well and bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes. Just be cautious using a blender because the peanut butter makes everything very thick...
  20. I just came back from vacation, and I managed not to cheat. Long road trips are so hard though - but my peanut butter muffins came in handy. I had a great week health-wise while I was away. I'm not sure if it's the diet finally kicking in, or if it's because I went off the pill. I just started a probiotic too, so I guess that could be contributing....
  21. I believe the book is meant primarily for those whose symptoms don't respond to a gluten-free diet (and for those with other problems, like IBD). I disagree that it's a fad diet - it's actually one of the original diets to treat celiac disease. The discovery of gluten as the culprit in celiac disease came later through additional research. I think Elaine...
  22. Just an update - I got the job! I'm so excited! Thanks for all your support.
  23. I find my muscles ache even during really simple activities - like walking. I don't have nearly the energy I used to, but I keep on plugging because I don't see much of an alternative. Sitting on the couch certainly isn't going to help! I may be in a different situation than you though - still have a lot of symptoms and haven't put on any weight since...
  24. Yeah, I know what you mean. I'll make a batch of something (peanut butter brownies, custard, etc) and blow through the whole thing in a couple of days. I never used to snack as much as I do now - I'm putting something in my mouth every 2 hours or so. Just small things - a piece of cheese here, a bit of fruit here. Hopefully this will put me on the track...
  25. Congrats! I reacted badly to something that I ate yesterday, maybe too many berries. Went to a "you-pick" farm and got about 15 pounds total of strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. I think I probably went a little overboard in snacking as I prepped the berries for freezing. Today I think I will make some veggie soup. Not that soup is very appealing...
