  1. Jeanne- Have you had a skin biopsy? Could your rash be DH (Dermatitis Herpeteformis)? That is also caused by gluten intolerance, but I'm not sure that all DH patients are celiacs as well. Lisa
  2. It's too bad that according to the Catholic church, your standing with God depends on whether you participate in certain ordinances. I don't want to get into a debate on religion, but there is something very wrong with that. Communion is a symbol of the sacrifice Christ made to set us free from man made regulations and laws. The Jews had a million rules...
  3. Thought I would share my experience today. This is the first time our church has taken communion since I have gone gluten-free, and it totally escaped me that the bread was a cracker that had gluten in it. It wasn't until my husband said "you didn't eat the cracker, did you?" that I realized what I had done. It's too late now, but I did not even think...
  4. I called the manufacturer of most of the makeup I wear (Mary Kay), and they gave me some statement about not being able to guarantee the ingredients in their products, and they would refer me to my doctor for his guidance. I'm sure she was reading from a script. I'm just curious if anyone has had similar experiences with makeup companies, and if they...
  5. I got a list of mainstream products that are gluten-free, and thought I would share one item that is no longer gluten-free (found out the hard way-should have read the darn label! ). They must have changed their ingredients, as I know they just added wheat to another cereal that used to be safe. It is Malt-o-Meal Corn Bursts. Does this happen...
  6. My doctor gave me a prescription that said "needs to be gluten-free" and left it up to the pharmacist. However, the pharmacy called on the one that my insurance covers, and they said that it is listed as gluten-free, but they won't guarantee it. What in the heck does that mean? Has anyone else had issues with pharmaceutical companies not wanting to guarantee...
  7. I keep hearing about having your doctor test your vitamin levels, so when I went to my first dr. appt. for my pregnancy, I asked if that's something they could look at. Since I've only been gluten-free since I found out I was pregnant, I want to make sure everything is okay. They said the only blood test they could do for vitamin levels was for folate,...
  8. I don't have a cast-iron skillet. Will any baking dish work?
  9. I thought that the honey bbq were gluten-free! I know that the chilli cheese are not, but I think that I read on their website that the honey bbq twists were gluten-free. I also checked the label, and it looked safe. Maybe I missed something.
  10. I just found a cheap gluten-free microwave meal from Healthy Choice. It is the enchilada with rice (sour cream sauce). I called to make sure, and it is gluten-free. Best of all-much cheaper than the specialty brands! Also, I had the Nachos Bel Grande from Taco Bell minus the meat (extra cheese and sour cream-yum!) and it didn't give me any problems...
  11. I was diagnosed with DH at age 19 (had it since childhood). Ignorant doctor never mentioned celiac. After researching and putting the two together, was finally diagnosed by gastrointenologist after begging my dermatologist for a referral. Can't remember for sure, I think I was 22.
  12. I haven't been gluten free long enough to feel the affects of being "glutened", but I know about fearing secret ingredients. I find myself not even trusting ingredient labels! I also have DH (skin disease from gluten), and last night I broke out, which means I probably ingested some gluten. But I can't figure out where from. Maybe my husband at a corn...
  13. Wow!!! I thought it was just because I smoked pot so much for all those years! I can't WAIT until I can have my brain back! I thought it was permanent damage!!! That alone is enough to do the gluten-free diet for me.....
  14. Does anyone make their own gluten-free bread in a breadmaker? Is it cheaper to just buy the bread mix, or buy all of the separate ingredients you need and make the mix from scratch? It seems like all of the ingredients are kinda spendy. Also, are Bob's Red Mill bread mixes pretty good? Do they compare to the real thing?
  15. So you do have to check every time it says natural or artificial flavoring????
  16. Seems like it was the opposite for me. As a kid, my mom thought that the vitamin E from the sun would help my "rash". She said I needed more sun.
  17. It seems like the only relief I get is from breaking the sores open, but then they just get bigger and fill back up with liquid. So I end up tearing off the skin, letting it scab over and eventually heal. After doing this over and over you end up with scars. But if I do nothing, they just get worse to the point that if anything touches them, it hurts....
  18. It sounds like DH to me. I also have had symptoms since I was a baby-my parents thought I was allergic to talc for a long time. I went to numerous doctors to no avail. It started getting worse and worse until, as a young adult, I started breaking out on my hands. Since I worked in a grocery store handling people's food, this was not acceptable. After...
  19. Here are some gluten-free foods I have tried: Mac & Cheese-okay but not the real thing! especially when sitting next to my kids "real Mac & Cheese" Cheddar flavored rice crackers-worse than cardboard Chocolate rice bars-okay but chocolate had a funny taste Chocolate chip cookies-pretty good, but not Nabisco! I bought some...

    ARCHIVED Struggling

It is reassuring to know that I am not the only one dealing with withdrawals! I'm newly pregnant, so I thought maybe it was that, but I'm sure it's because I haven't eaten bread in a week! I am usually a frugal shopper, only buying things as cheap as I can possibly get them. So this may be a change for me. I can't just buy what's on sale and go with that...
  21. Wow! That does make sense. Silly me, I was trying to imagine that somehow it would absorb through my skin! Is it pretty easy to identify? I've checked my lotion, and it doesn't appear to have gluten in it. Would it be listed as ingredients on the Forbidden ingredient list?
  22. Thank you! I can't imagine having to eat salad with Italian dressing for the rest of my life!
  23. I cannot figure out how lotions and shampoos could end up in your small intestines????
  24. I have been (as far as I know-still learning) gluten free for about a week, and all of a sudden I have cramps and diarrhea, which is weird, since it seems like I have the symptoms of celiac now whereas I didn't as much before I cut gluten out. Maybe it's working it's way out of my body? Foodphobic: your symptoms sound like something I went through...
  25. Does anyone know of a good gluten-free ranch dressing? I like the kind that you get at the deli as a dip, rather than tangy kind. I don't have a lot of money for "trial and error", so any suggestions would be great! Thank you!
