Just one consideration on NYC, I hear from many it is the most expensive place in the US. So maybe we can get a deal from whichever hotel we are at and maybe they would throw in a convention room. On a good note, I haven't been there either and I am sure there be many a derelict there and derelict old buildings.
Let's get Donald Trump to help us
-
That reminds me, I need to go up and get some pizza crusts.
-
I totally agree that we should have it at a different place every year. That would be so cool to get to travel around the continent with my fellow celiacs. That would also be something really cool to look forward to every year.
I just had another idea... Maybe we could get the celiac bears to make an appearance for the kids??? I don't know how far out they're booked, but it would be really neat for the kids. Open Original Shared Link
That would be cool for those who bring kids. I would also need a count on kids and babies if anyone bring them also. As I have gluten-free products for kids, babies, animals, adults...etc.

Maybe we should think about (at least the first year) only doing a 1-day convention. Then, for those of you who have never been in the area, we could do a sightseeing thing on Sunday... That could be really cool. A 2-day thing may be a little hard to plan with only a year's planning... I know it sounds so far away, but there's SO much to do. What do you guys think?
And Rusla... Yeah, I think you can find some of that in DC...
I think if we extend the convention on Saturday night to 9 pm or have a dinner after it on Saturday and give out prizes then too. I guess it depends on what we have lined for the day. The sight seeing thing would be good. I could get pictures of derelicts at the White House etc..
Then for future years it could be held in different places. In both Canada and the US. We could have the cruise or whatever for those who want that or they can do the other one like this one or they can do both.

It must be strategically placed away from the window not only for privacy but can't have the sun beating down on it and then sit down (OUCH!)!
I'm shocked nobody has mentioned the chandalier to swing on and ostrich feathers.....
Karen
We were waiting for you to bring it up.
-
Well I have never been to DC either. I really haven't been down the East Coast at all of the US. I have been to every state that looks like Saskatchewan and the beautiful states on the West Coast.
I like getting pictures of derelicts and derelict buildings. Got any of those in DC?

Nothing like the sound of fleshy bottoms and naked thighs pulling away from plastic.

I have 4 other websites and it would only cost me like $2.99 additional for another domain name... I can do the website no problem...
Rusla, great idea on a casual meet and great on Friday night. I like that. Since most of us have never met, it would be really cool to get to meet with our online friends before the big day. And for those that can't make it in on Friday evening, there will always be Saturday and Sunday to get acquainted. Maybe we could even have local restaurants reserve space for us and do gluten free meals??? Just a thought...
Where exactly is College Park, MD in relation to Baltimore??? Might we not want to do one of the convention centers in Baltimore??? They're HUGE with lots of hotels and parking garages around...
That is a good question, we need all those in Maryland to post that. Well, Maryland is one of the States I have not been to yet. I will have my camera so I can get pictures of everyone and Radman dancing on the table if he comes.
-
Then not only will you be featured on Jerry Springer but possibly in "Best Livingroom Designs for Trailer Park Homes."
Although I really do like leather couches. Actually your couches have to be faux leather then that would be better.

Should find a hotel that is very close to where we plan to hold it unless we hold it in a convention room in the hotel. That way, us who come from other planets aren't getting lost. Of course depending on the amount of people going will determine whether I have to ship anything ahead of time or not.
Websites are cheap to buy, Deborah got a webhost to donate the hosting as that is usually very expensive. That is why I was thinking perhaps we could tie the two in together. On the Friday we could do a meet and greet or something like that, depending on when all the planes get in from those of us who would be flying in (to cold to ride my broom that far in April) and a dinner get together.

Oh my gosh, I would love to meet Radman! As well as the rest of you... You've become my dearest family over the past few months and I know that no one will ever understand what I go through every day like you guys do. That's why I proposed the gluten free group hug, because you all are my big, caring, sensitive, loving, gluten free family.
My dad said he would probably be interested in donating a small amount of stickers (like 100 or so). He owns a very small sign shop. He also had a GREAT idea for t-shirts. Why don't we do a celiac convention logo on the FRONT of the shirt, and then sell sponsorship spots on the BACK of the t-shirt. That's how a lot of organizations pay for their t-shirts... I could design a few logos for a committee to look over...
If we want to do this, let's develop a committee of about 10-20 people. Let's do that first so that we can assign responsibilities. If we want to try to get something together for 2007, we need to start soon. I've organized a lot of local events (way back when, we did benefits for our local AIDS project) and it's really time consuming. Anyone have any nominations??? Who's the person on this board that's always calling companies for everyone else??? Is that you, JudyinPhilly??? I can't remember... I'd like to nominate whoever that person is...
The t-shirt thing is a good idea and below the name their phone number or website. I we can get the shirts donated, then the embroidery or silk screening donated, those companies would be sponsors. Now, as we already had a website up for the cruise in 2008, I have to get a hold of Deborah and see if there is a way we could also add this convention on for 2007.
Now for the logo we should have under it the year also. As for food donations they would more than likely have to come from down in the US, you guys have more choices down there anyway. Just look at some of the advertisers on this site and get a hold of them. Like the guys who do those pies. They were trying to find a way to get them into Canada but they are in the US and maybe they will donate some.MMMMMM
We also need to decide and I suspect a weekend would be good to hold this on like Friday to Sunday. Not a long weekend though.

Being as young as your daughter is there is a very good chance it wouldn't show damage, yet. You and your husband could come back negative and still have Celiac. The elimination in itself shows that the chances of celiac or gluten intolerance (pretty well same thing without a lot of damage) are very good. There are tons of places wheat, barley, oats, rye, malt hide in, also beware of spelt, kamut as they are wheat too. Anything with HPP or HVp which Hydrolozyed(sp) Vegetable protein, plant protein, modified food starches, or even made in a factory that makes wheat/gluten products is bad. Shampoos, ointments etc.All can have wheat and gluten in them. I suggest you check out the lists on this board and go to the Celiac association nearest you. Also when in doubt leave it out and if at all possible call or email the company to get a gluten-free list or find out if products are gluten-free.

I imagine it wouldn't be as cold either....
Karen
Maybe we can get them to donate it for the convention. That is for sure, metal can be hot or cold. PVC not so bad.
-
I'm not gonna say anything
We can pick up some PVC pipe for chea and it is strong.

My business is Pagan in nature, however; since my dx of Celiac,I added my handmade gluten-free lotions, soaps, deoderants, shampoos, lipsticks, animal shampoos etc., to it along with environmentally friendly cleaning products and fabric softeners. All which I make, I also design clothes. I have a fashion show in late 2007 that I am designing clothing for in Calgary.
What I would do would be to have a small gift bag for everyone attending with some trial sizes and I could do up a couple of baskets for raffles. Those would contain a mix of more products.
We would need to get Radman there to dance on the table.
-
Whoops, I missed that April Part. Also, just as I said I would do for the cruise I will post bulletins in health food stores etc. We should have contacts in different states or east, west in the US and Canada. As for messenger things, I have ICQ and Yahoo will not and can't download it anyway onto my Mac butt we could all do Yahoo.
-
First question is; when would this be planned for 2007?
I will do exactly what I was doing for the cruise. I will donate a gift bag of gluten-free products from my business. By then if it is next year, I should have my makeup formulated so, each bag will have trial sizes of assorted things. This means of course that I will need official tallies of all men and women.
We would have to set up hotels and a place that would have portable kitchens for the competitions. We would have to go to our Celiac Associations to see if they will advertise it on their web sites, see if we can get a donation of t-shirts or at least get them cheap Etc.

Well if they start telling you gross stories, tell them one much grosser.

I think that pole would be great for him but we must keep his knuckle dragging buddies away from it.

Gluten is rude, gluten stinks. Gluten is arrogant and self-absorbed. Gluten sets off to make our lives a living torture. Gluten is a terrorist and thinks it is better than everyone else.
Gluten is a bully and makes us drive fast.
So on our t-shirts above;" #5, with added attractions" we should have "Gluten made me do it." On the back, "Gluten Busters"

I contacted the swedish fish company and they told me they were gluten free.. then i emailed back and asked about the artificial flavors and they said they do not contain wheat but they can't guarantee that they dont contain other sources of gluten such as barley, rye, .....SO Does anyone with gluten intolerance/celiac disease eat swedish fish? Do they affect you or are they safe?
I am sorry but I really don't know what Swedish fish are, I have never heard of them.
Are they a canned fish or are they a cracker?
-
Did you call or email the head office? You should let them know that they could be doing some real damage to people unless they get an accurate list.
I have sent them an email. The list is so far from accurate it is scary,
-
Okay, I have to admit to this. Gluten and I are cahoots. I send him off to reak havoc on others lives in hopes he will leave me alone. Now Gluten is not that bright, he forgets where he is to go and he comes and causes me grief.
Remember the old saying "The Devil made me do it." Well we have a new one, "Gluten made me do it." When the police stop you and say, "did you know you were speeding?" You can say, "Gluten made me do it."

I am sure your dancing on tables wasn't that long ago and you could revamp your career in table dancing. I am sure they would go over well at a hospital and on billboards.
Amaranth Foods, Calgary

I know a lot of people have been glutened by Amy's foods and I would say the reason why is on the packaging ,it says it is produced in a facility with wheat products. I was up at Amaranth foods and they showed me the Amy's that was gluten-free. However after reading where it is produced it really isn't, not for me anyway. So when I was up there I got some new cookies that taste good and I would tell you the name but the cat is laying on my wrist so typing is difficult. I got some butter tarts by El Peto, never tried their stuff before. I also found some gluten-free ice cream cones. I only went to get Kinnickinnik pizza crusts. As usual it cost me the usual fortune up there.
They have a contest on right now, I don't know for how much longer but you can win $2000.00 worth of groceries. I sure hope they pick my name.
