Hi. OK. Maiden name; Seymour. Grandmother: Helen Long. Great-grandmother: Molly Ahearn. Any relatives out there? My question is this- I eat corned beef and cabbage every St. Pat's day, but is it authentic?? I have a feeling that people in Ireland don't. Anyone know?
When I was in Ireland corned beef and cabbage was rarely on the menu. I think I saw it once and that was in Dublin.
But I can say I had absolutely no problems eating in Ireland and I love Ireland for many reasons.

I would like to say that I do not touch the BBQ sauces because a great deal of time they have Barley Malt in them which is a gluten.
I have never been made sick by Kraft and I am so sensitive that miniscule crumbs devastate me. I would definitely suggest calling the company.

I wish this place existed when I was there in February, thats for sure ...by the time I go back it'll be closed
~ Lisa ~
No it won't, Lisa. I think I alone am paying their bills. I have taken four people there who have been bringing their friends and family and I have been there three times this week.
Talk about an addict.

There is a new Restaurant in calgary that advertizes to be a "gluten free gourmet", I am told it is called "A Tasty Menu" address??, has anybody tried it??
Yes, I have actually I was there twice in two days. Their food is all made from scratch and they serve pizza and delicious chocolate cake. They have a children's menu also. Even though they are far away from me, it is worth it to drive there. There is absolutely no gluten in that restaurant. Go and enjoy it.

When you are gluten-free you need to be totally gluten free, that means, soaps, shampoos, lotions, food. You must read every label all the time and if you aren't sure don't touch it. I also call all the companies if their phone number is on the bottles. Now, I have DH and being careful of shampoos etc. because it affects the DH also if you have lotion on your hands and it is not Gluten free then when you pick up something to eat, you injest it. I always get glutened at work no matter how careful I am at cleaning things off and wearing gloves to do it. All it takes is a few crumbs for me.

It adds so much flavor to recipes... but I don't eat it b/c of the vinegar base...
can anyone think of anything that may be a good substitute? my wheels are turning but I think I need some help! lol
thx!
Worchestershire sauce is almost always wheat/guten based, that is where your problem lies. I do not know where it comes from but I have found a gluten/wheat free one called Wizard.

I wonder what a five day old shipped pizza would taste like?
i don't think I would want to try it without refridgeration. Since the Splitt closed here last year we have had no restaurants that are gluten free and now we have one and it has pizza. As you can tell I am crazy happy because it is very good food. They also do vegan for the vegans in the city.

That sounds sooo good.
It's a little bit out of my way, so have seconds on me Rusla.
Okay, until you show up here I will be forced to eat your share of chocolate cake and pizza.

I am so bad, I went back to the restaurant today with another Celiac friend. This time we split a Ceasar Salad that had cheese and garlic croutons, gluten-free of course. It was delicious, then I again had a pizza which was every bit as good as the one yesterday and brought most of it home with me for supper. I also brought another piece of their delicious chocolate cake home with me.
My friend and I travel from Bowness to Forest Lawn for that food and I rarely like travelling out of my area if I don't need or have to but for them I will. We also met a couple from Silver Springs there, we were working on her to open a bigger place in the NW. All of us in there today were having pizza's.

I found a brand new gluten free restaurant in Calgary today. Granted not in an end of town I usually go to but that is okay. They have only been open five weeks. The name is "A tasty Menu," right now they are only open Wed. to Sunday, 11:00 am - 8:00 pm for now until they get more busy. It is a small modestly designed restaurant. They make everything from scratch and even though I am not a thin crust pizza girl, their thin crust pizza is to die for and so is their chocolate cake with cream cheese icing. They are located at #105 - 4202 17th Ave SE on the north side of the road in a small strip mall next to an adult store, phone number is: 403-235-0031. Stop in and say hi to the owner, Barbara, who is celiac,

I have just returned from Ireland. Believe me whether large city or small town there is no problem staying gluten-free. All I had to do was walk into a restaurant and sa, "I am Celiac." The would adjust anything and some had gluten-free menus, you can buy delicious gluten-free items in every food store.

I was debating a cruise with some friends, I talked to Holland America. Holland America is very well versed on Celiac disease and said it would be no problem if you let them know at time of booking and again when on board. I also know others who have been on Holland America and said they would travel no other, because not only were they treated like royalty but not once were they glutened.

Yellow Rose, welcome.
I don't know how to answer your question as having arthritis also does not make joint pain go away. However I can answer about the big "D" if you have that...lol

When I started my job, I loved it and the coordinator. However, half way through coordinators changed the new took away all our stress toys, no more pats on the back for good things, only kicks in the face. I rewrote a manual for them and I was given three hours to do it in, others rewrote a section of another manual and were given a week to do it in. When, supposed appreciation went out everyone but me was thanked. When they decide to do something for us who deal with ot and other things they order in KFC and Pizza. People now leave there in droves. The coordinator lies to us about everything and there is no morale in the place I work. Most of us are so depressed we are just looking for a chance to get out of there.
Yes, I can relate to how you feel about your job.

I hope to see it soon. Don't retire to here (Canada) as our health care is getting worse by the day. I actually would love to retire to Cuba.

Hi Rusia,
Yes I am in Dublin City the Capital of the Republic of Ireland.
.
You are in for a treat as most, if not all of the hotels and restaurants are Coeliac friendly.
Most larger restaurants have a seperate Gluten Free Menu !
.
So come for the view, the food and the people, all are friendly!
.
Enjoy your visit.
.
P.S. I normally go to Canada for a month or so over the Christmas and New Year,
to see the relatives, in Burlington and Mississauga Ontario.
.
Then Aunts come stay with me for a few months during the summer.
.
Best Regards,
David
Thanks David,
We are going to be landing in Dublin. That is so wonderful that food is not going to be a problem. As my sister is not Celiac yet or diagnosed we figure we can drink the Apple Cider in the pubs or rum as neither of us can drink the ale's or beers.
What is the weather link in Sept-October? Should I get a hefty pair hip waders and rain coat?
I am amazed the relatives never went to Vancouver, as their weather is supposed to be closer to Irelands. You would like Vancouvers much better than yucky Burilington and Mississauga.
Have a great day,
Rusla

Hi David,
Do you live in the Emerald Isle? I got hold of the Coeliac association there and they sent me and awesome list of some restaurants and hotels that are Coeliac friendly. My sister and I are flying from Canada to Ireland on Sept. 25. this year. I was told I should have no problem finding food over in Ireland. I am so excited to be going there.

Cream Hill Estates aka Lara's rolled oats are safe. The explanation why they are is this; in normal places that have oats can often put them in bins where wheat has been, it takes more than 20 years to get wheat our of the bins. The Cream Hill Estates Oats have their own bins which were brand new and as the only thing they raise is oats, that is all that goes in them.
I am very highly sensitive to gluten and I can attest that they are safe. I have never had a problem with them yet.

Not only can Celiac's be obese but in my two years gluten-free mine has gotten worse. I don't eat read meat, fatty fried foods, drink pop, eat salt, of course no wheat etc. I eat a chocolate bar maybe once every two days. I have no dairy and in the last month my weight went up 30 lbs. I drink lots of water, some fruit juices once in awhile. People say I look puffy. I am trying to find a doctor because it is most likely a pituitary problems. I have a friend who went through all of the same things and after taking her pituitary tumor out she is back at normal weight. I have thyroid problems and asthmatic which can also lead to pituitary problems.
I would like to know if anyone else has had the pituitary thing.

You have a really great time. I am sure you are excited.

Many rice milks have barley malt in them. You could use almond mild it has a slightly sweet taste and I would use the original. Now as cakes go both Kinnickinick and el Peto have fantabulous gluten-free cake mixes. So fake them out and do it from the cake mixes.

Rusla, I found this for you for Denmark:
Open Original Shared Link
There's a restaurant text and a list of shops, and a list of relevant words in English-Danish, etc.
If you need a translation of something on the site, just ask, I can read danish reasonably well (it's close enough to swedish).
I really like Copenhagen, and Danish people are very friendly...well worth a visit.
Pauliina
Thanks Paulina,
Sad, Danish is my heritage and I can't read or speak it and that is one of the reasons we would like to go there for a couple of days. We have relatives we have never seen over there that i one reason we would like to go there and the other is because we have never been there.

Rusia,
If you are in Dublin, try Cornucopia (amazing restaurant) on Wicklow Street and Cafe Fresh at Powerscourt. Both are in easy walking distance if you are in Dublin City Center and have lots of gluten-free options.
Just a couple of doors down from Cornucopia is Nourish, a great health food store that sells gluten free foods. Check out their other locations at: Open Original Shared Link
There's a chemist (i.e pharmacy) near McDonald's on Grafton Street that also has gluten-free foods. (also close to Nourish)
Try the Mrs Crumpets cookies - they are amazing and gluten-free and are for sale in lots of places there.
I was pleasently surprised by the availability of gluten free food in Ireland. A lot of the big supermarkets also have a gluten free section. Some small restuarants I ate at had homemade gluten-free bread. There's more awareness in Ireland than in the US.
A word of warning though - the labeling laws are a little different, so read ingredients. I picked up a bag of potato chips - the label said suitable for coelics (i.e. celiacs), but there was wheat listed in the ingredients. I didn't eat them.
Enjoy your trip. You will LOVE Ireland.
Georgia Girl
Thanks! This sounds great. I have emailed the Irish Coeliac Association in hopes they can also send me a list. Everyone I have talked to who has been to Ireland has said the same as you have. I am so excited.

Well, my sister and I have decided to go to Ireland and maybe fly over to Copenhagen Denmark for a few days in September, So if anyone has been to these places or knows if they have a Celiac Association that I can contact and get information. My sister is fine but I need to find stuff for me.
I have decided to make some dehydrated fruit and chicken jerky to take with me.

As I have not been on here in a long time it is still nice to see some of the oldsters like me on here. Jersey Angel, you are looking quite furry today.
Anyway, I am a writer, artist, photographer and I can relate to how you feel. They certainly were not much as friends go, were they? I didn't lose my friends, we still talk by phone. The thing is about this disease you will feel cheated. Where I am there is very little places to go eat for us folks. So my friends go out and have fun and I, stay home and paint and write. Although I consider what I am doing a much more admirable pursuit than swilling alcohol, there are some days I wish I could have dinner with my friends.
I never eat at their places because of cross contamination issues. I also don't want to put them out to attempt to make anything special for me, so I don't go. The thing is until someone has the disease they just don't get it about the disease and I wouldn't expect them to. So in the meantime you have us, we are not the same and as we live in different places and countries it makes it difficult to hang out. We just have to make our own world.
