  1. Upon my urging, my dad had the blood work done for celiac. I have suspected since my diagnosis that he also has it, as he's always had some of the classic symptoms. I haven't talked to him yet about this, but he called last night to tell us that the test was negative. Now, I've been hearing that false negatives are possible. Can someone explain this a...
  2. Okay, here's a weird one to make one pause...for me, the worst symptom of all this is the fact that I get no symptoms...I cannot tell if I've accidently been glutened, because nothing happens. The only symptom I had before I was diagnosed was low iron...that's it. I know you guys who suffer so terribly must be thinking, "Why the @!#!*!* are you complaining...
  3. Ms Sillyak Screwed, (love the name!) Wow. I have a lot to digest after your terrific, comprehensive post. I am in Ottawa, Canada, but it doesn't matter much...we can target the same groups everywhere in the world. Our government, in fact, may be much more willing to get to the bottom of this misdiagnosis-and-therefore-unnecessary-drugs-prescribed syndrome...
  4. As shayesmom pointed out, there already is a pill out there, ready for FDA approval, that supposedly calms the lower intestine down (hard to imagine, really) when celiacs consume gluten. But do we really want to do this? I'm with Shayesmom...let's work on attacking the CAUSE of this illness, not the SYMPTOMS. The cause is gluten, and we need enough voices...
  5. Great solutions. This absolutely MUST be a grass-roots revolution. We can't fight the drug and medical behemoths unless we are huge in number, and it's gotta start just the way you have done, shayesmom. Something else I am doing is sending a long letter to our three local newspapers, talking about the lack of knowledge about celiac, why the ignorance is...
  6. So, so true. But the battle to get the truth out is truly uphill, because as we've mentioned, the pharmaceutical giants are going to stay quiet about the poisonous properties of gluten, as are many doctors, either due to ignorance or due to financial motivation--big bucks from prescribed meds. But it's not only them who are keeping all of this quiet...I...
  7. Yes, I'm afraid I agree wholeheartedly about the big pharmaceuticals having no interest whatsoever in celiac disease research. They are highly motivated to keep the general populace ignorant of the symptoms and dietary treatment of this disease, because they want to keep people believing that they've got IBS, or clinical depression, or fibromyalgia (the...
  8. You betcha...Man, this guy is smarter than I am...It's obvious to me why standard poodles are the chosen breed for circus performers--humbling intelligence, an obsession with performing, a great sense of fun and humour--and great company. Can't get a better breed. And he tolerates gluten perfectly.
  9. As I made my way down this thread, I've felt worse and worse. I am a type one diabetic, and was unable to nurse my second baby as my diabetes got so dangerously out of control when I nursed my daughter after my first pregnancy (apparently the prolactin can wreak havoc on blood sugar control). I was advised by my endocrinologist to keep my kids away from...
  10. Boy, this thread is flying in the face of all the famous statistics, which tell us that celiac is so often a precursor to diabetes, and rarely the other way around. I, too, became a diabetic a long time before my celiac diagnosis (thirty-three years diabetic, six months known celiac). Boy, talk about dietary challenges now!
  11. I knock off about 10 glasses of water a day, and I can only drink it if it's cool, or even lukewarm. I know it sounds kind of gross, but if you try it you may be surprised. I find it MUCH easier to get down than really cold water. Sometimes I boil it and put it into my big teapot with a decaffeinated green tea bag. I can get four glasses down pretty...
  12. Having done so much living on one very restricted diet (type one diabetes all my life) and now a second one, I've come to learn two cardinal rules that one need follow to avoid bingeing, whether it be hormonal, emotional, or just compulsive, I-can't-stop-myself face-stuffing: -drink lots, I mean lots (64+ ounces) of water a day -eat five or six medium...
  13. Yep, I mentioned this very thing on a thread not long ago dealing with gasoline properties. I spend a lot of my free daydreaming time thinking about the ways we could make up for the losses to our economy if (when) the world's gluten-intolerant people get off wheat. Fashioning wheat into a gas is not a big jump, what with corn already being utilized. How...
  14. One industry that depends greatly on the status quo (i.e., untreated celiacs everywhere) is the wheat industry. We are talking a HUGE percentage of our GNP (at least, in Canada) that is generated through the sale of wheat. Our country is covered in it, and if certain citizens wised up to what's at the root of their chronic abdominal pain, exhaustion, D...
  15. Aaahhhh....thank you, Nini, this clears up a lot of my confusion. Simply put, the medical community doesn't quite know what's going on. Surprise, surprise. I've heard (or read) you say before that the only true diagnostic tool for celiac disease is the gluten-free diet. But what if you are asymptomatic, like me? Can't diagnose it with the diet, and...
  16. There's still something I'm confused about. I convinced my parents to get tested for celiac, and my dad has just gone for the blood work. I'm still unsure why the blood tests can produce a false negative. I told him that he may have gluten intolerance even tho the antibodies are not showing up in his blood...is this correct? If not, why can a negative...
  17. Nikki, What a fascinating read that UK board is! Everyone should take a look at it, especially we North Americans. Such a different opinion, in many instances, of what "gluten-free" means, and the role it should play, if any, in the celiac diet. Again, being someone who can eat gluten without intrusive symptoms, I really want to know who's right...the...
  18. It would be very telling to see biopsies of celiacs in the UK on their permissible diet, and compare them to ours in North America with our zero-tolerance diet.. If you follow an almost-gluten-free diet, what does the damage look like in a couple of years? I could choose to do this (I haven't) because I'm not symptomatic when I get glutened. Are European...
  19. What a helpful thread....Thanks so much for all this, guys. My son is quite happy about the M&Ms. I'll keep reading for any more tips...and Smunkeemom, if my daughter tests positive, I'll likely have a baking partner there.
  20. Hey, all, I just took my eight-year old son in for the blood work for celiac. My daughter I'm gonna tackle in a couple of weeks. I've been talking to him about the way I eat and all the good things I can still have, but I know it's going to be a long, hard fall for him if he's positive. Last night he asked me in desparation, "can I still have a chocolate...
  21. Hi, Karen, Wow, thanks a lot! Superb...I'd love it if you could email mail me what you have. The trip suddenly doesn't seem so frightening now!
  22. My daughter and I will be taking a week-long trip to Vancouver this June. We'll be staying with a friend of mine who isn't at all celiac-consious. Anyone have any idea of good restaurants that will cater to my needs, as well as gluten-free shops where I can pick up breads, cereal etc. for our breakfasts and lunches? Any info would be greatly appreciated...
  23. I'm from Ottawa, and yes, I think I'm going to go to the conference. Lots of contacts and info to be picked up there, for sure. Anyone else going?

    ARCHIVED Anyone Cheat?

I think a much bigger question is this: How many of you (us!) who experience no symptoms when glutened knowingly cheat? That would be me, and the only time I have cheated in six months was when I had to have sugar immediately (type one diabetic) and grabbed the one sugar source that was there--a vending machine chocolate bar. No symptoms after...and I...
