ARCHIVED Dr.s Are Frustrating Me...
elye replied to num1habsfan's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'll quickly jump in here...fascinating thread. Lisa, you're Canadian as am I, and we are both in provinces where the health care system is severely flawed, where waiting lists for essential, often life-saving proceedures is months and sometimes over a year long. Sure, in theory Canada has always had one of the best health-care systems in the world, where... -

ARCHIVED Untreated Celiac And Mini-strokes
elye replied to elye's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi, Rinne, Thanks so much. Actually, I am feeling physically very well now, it's just the shaken up part that's still with me. Funny, I've always taken such pride in my great health and my history of having no complications from diabetes, and rereading my last post I can see how I really don't want to imagine that my great track record has ended, finally... -
Well, I could use some insight from all you online buddies of mine. I had the worst day yesterday--was showering at the gym, bent down to soap my feet, and when I straightened up, WHAM! Out of the blue, I have severe double vision. I stumbled out of the shower, managed to get dressed, and found two of my friends and told them I needed to get to the emergency...

Yes, me too! LOVE my bananas, I'm a two-a-dayer, but our kitchen is inundated with fruit flies! How do you get rid of these things?

ARCHIVED Telling Our Daughter About Her Diagnosis
elye replied to cmdt's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I can't speak to the issue of one's children being diagnosed, as both my kids have had a "negative" blood result. I however CAN talk about being a silent celiac, as I had absolutely no symptoms before diagnosis, with the exception of low iron (but what menstuating thirty-something woman ISN'T somewhat iron deficient)? My sharp GP decided to pursue things... -
ARCHIVED Why Am I Gaining Weight? Soooo Confused
elye replied to deena647's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hey, Ehrin, I know what you mean about fear and apprehension...I guess this is what's held me back from exploring the pump further. Interesting that you were that way too before you finally took the plunge. I don't want to get too far off the posted topic, but have you explored the Edmonton protocol? (they've essentially "cured" type one diabetes in a... -
ARCHIVED Why Am I Gaining Weight? Soooo Confused
elye replied to deena647's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Ehrin, You know, I have contemplated the pump a number of times, but never seriously enough to really explore it. My blood sugars have always been under great control with my two usual insulin injections a day ( I exercise daily, so that keeps the needles down). I've never had reason to consider another maintenance method. But now that I have this weight... -
ARCHIVED Why Am I Gaining Weight? Soooo Confused
elye replied to deena647's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I can relate to the weight gain issue for sure...I've gained a good ten to fifteen pounds since going gluten-free. To complicate matters and make it more difficult to lose the weight, I am a tightly controlled type one diabetic. I have hypoglycemia regularly, as I'm keeping my blood sugars between 4 and 6 before meals. So, that means the consumption of... -
What a terrific website! Thanks a lot...I'm printing it out right now.

ARCHIVED Exercise And Liftig Wieghts Seem To Cause Celiac Symptoms In Me?
elye replied to jennifervan's topic in Sports and Fitness
Yep, I would bet money that you are hypothyroid. Hair loss and an inability to lose weight are classic symptoms. It's an easy blood test, and super easy to medicate for--a pill a day. -
I cannot remember who, but one of the many specialists that I have seen in the last couple of years confirmed my connection to sulfa and sulphites...The way I react to the two seems too big a coincidence for them not to be connected physiologically. Any Greek people around? Because they have the same prefix, "sulph", which looks Greek to me but I don't know...
-
Wow, a heavy read, but that's fascinating. I dunno, tho...I have a definite allergy to sulfa, and I also have bad reactions to three or four specific foods (besides gluten): dried fruit, grapes and sauerkraut--sulphite-laden foods. It's a funny coincidence...?...
-
A lot of people have an allergy to sulpha drugs (I do) which indicates an allergy to sulphur. If you know you have a problem with sulpha, then the sulphites in foods will likely affect you as well. I have to be very careful with grapes (a drag, because I love them...)

Yep, I take acidophilus every day (a cheaper brand but you have to make sure you're getting six billion active cells), and if I ever feel the start of a yeast infection starting, I triple the dose and it always goes away.

ARCHIVED Just A Gut Reaction....
elye posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Didn't quite know where to put this post...I guess it has to do with symptoms and testing. I have just read the most fascinating article in the latest Prevention magazine by Sarah Mahoney, and all sorts of bells are going off in my head. It is a feature on intuition called "Going with your gut", and after discussing the nature of hunches and insight, the... -

ARCHIVED Auto Immunde Diseases
elye replied to Lister's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Since I was first diagnosed with celiac (eight months ago), I have often wondered if there is any connection to it and the fact that I so rarely get a cold or the flu...now I wonder more, because it sounds like a number of other celiacs have the same situation. Yep, people around me can be dropping like flies, and I remain the lone one standing. I would... -
ARCHIVED Problem With Mom And Dad...
elye replied to elye's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I just checked out the website. I'll check to see if my parent's insurance will cover any of the cost. Sounds great...don't know why we don't have this in Canada. Now, is this stool test something we do at home ourselves, or something we collect for (!?) and send back for THEM to analyze? -
ARCHIVED Problem With Mom And Dad...
elye replied to elye's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Excellent food for thought from all of you...I am in Ottawa (Canada) and I have not heard of Enterolab anywhere else but on this panel. Does anyone know if there is "Enterolab" up here? -
ARCHIVED Problem With Mom And Dad...
elye posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, I've been presented with a problem that I hope somebody has shared or can give me some insights on. Both of my parents recently had the blood work done for celiac. I have long suspected my dad is, as he's had the classic symptoms for most of my life. Recently, I've suspected it in my mom as she is often constipated and has had bad arthritis for years... -
I am often asked this very question..."which is tougher to handle, the celiac , the diabetes or the hypothyroidism?" Low thyroid is of course very easy...one pill a day, with a blood test every six months or so. In terms of diet alone, the diabetes food plan is much easier for me than the gluten-free diet. Sugar doesn't tend to hide in foods like gluten...

This is slightly an aside, but something I always keep on hand for low blood sugars that is small and handy and VERY effective in a matter of seconds is glucose tablets. They are made up of 100% glucose, which gets into you bloodstream much faster than any other sugar source that is found in other I-need-to-grab-something-quick hypoglycemic choices like...
