My eighty-two year old Dad (who has himself spent his life making people laugh as a radio and television performer) tells this story of the time a few months ago when he was walking through their neighborhood park and came upon old Sid, a friend he's made through these strolls. Sid, ninety-five and a widower, was sitting on the bench, head in hands, crying...

Hmmmmmm...Largewood.... Wouldn't want to meet him in a dark alley. Wait...let me reconsider...
-
Yes, Indeed! A Mr. Smallwood may be easier to get into a coffin, however...not as much to...move out of the way...

Happy, happy Birthday to all you very balanced Libras...
-
I dunno if he really died...or if his name was really Allan Smallwood, actually. My apologies if you are the real composer of this great ditty, and I have misrepresented you...here we go, offending people again...(!)

On a much more sombre note... We must take a quiet moment now to mourn the passing of Allan Smallwood, aged 93, at his home in Chicago this past weekend. He was the composer of the song "The Hokey Pokey", written in 1946. For the family, the most painful part of the funeral service came when they were putting Smallwood's body into the coffin. They...

Dunno about this. I'll ask my hygienist friend, but I have my doubts that it is listed anywhere on the packaging. Just shows you how little informed the medical world still is on this sensitivity! Sure, they've made non-latex gloves for the latex-sensitive, yet they throw wheat flour overtop of them...yeesh...

ARCHIVED What A Difference 100 Years Makes!

...Perhaps much of the diarrhea was due to gluten intolerence, too...After all, a lot of it nowadays is likely due to undiagnosed celiac, and we KNOW about the disease! -

I wouldn't doubt it--along with all the thousands of others who were dying of the puzzling, wasting illness they simply called "consumption"! -
ARCHIVED It's Been A While...
elye replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hey, Jerry! Yet another reason to just get off gluten and to heck with the blood panel (or even the biopsy): THERE CAN BE FALSE NEGATIVES. So, the tests can mean nothing. Getting sick from gluten means everything! -
ARCHIVED Hair Loss
elye replied to taffymorgan's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hair loss was my only symptom of celiac disease. My very with-it family doctor tested my iron, found it very low, then ran the celiac panel. Voila! So I went off gluten and almost all of my hair has grown back. -
Ask about their gloves--often these are packed with flour sprinkled between them to keep them from sticking (this from my good friend, who is a long-time hygienist).
-
Yep, enamel deficiency is certainly related to celiac, and it makes sense...malnutrition affects everything in the body, teeth included. I've had lots of decay in my teeth over the years, and with the celiac diagnosis it suddenly became clear why!

ARCHIVED Diabeties And Celiac Disease
elye replied to delawaregirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I am a type one diabetic, and I know that like some of the other type ones on this forum, getting glutened results in skyrocketing blood-sugars for me. I don't exactly know why this happens, but sometimes I'll know I've accidentally ingested gluten because I have a sudden high bs reading, as I normally have very tight control. So from my experience, eating... -
Okay, okay, been gone all day and look at what has happened to this thread... Let's try and lure Albert back here. I want his unique perspective on mullets, astro-diapers and Altoids.

Wally Shirra...Wally Shirra...doesn't ring a bell. I'm thinking more of a talk-show host type, floating around and smiling confidently...Howie Mandell? Regis Philbin?

That is a great enviornmentally friendly idea...I think I'll just fold up all the instructions that my husband has immediately discarded from new purchases, and put it all in a nice basket holder in the bathroom for him to wipe his... I love it!

ARCHIVED For Those Of You With Dogs
elye replied to lonewolf's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Funny, my enormous standard poodle, being the clown of the dog breed family, will run after a thrown ball and he's suddenly in the circus...parading about, tossing the ball loosely up and catching it, circling so all the adoring audience can see him. It's gotten so hilarious that we just let him entertain...I no longer try to get him to return the ball to... -
Diaper space junk... You'd think the astronauts have been outfitted with diapers so that they in fact would be totally relaxed when out on their spacewalks. "Oops...gotta go...but hey, it's all good, 'cause I'm wearing my Pampers Ultra-man Pull-ups! I can just take my time collecting these samples. Thanks, Pampers!" Hey, I smell a very effective advertising...

So, you started with the Russian...I hope you were able to avoid the use of our good King's English, and please tell me you spared le Francais! I just thought this: what a way for a person to void a cheque!!
-
I think we women find ourselves stranded in restrooms without said toilet paper because we go through more of it, i.e., we use it for...both...so it needs more replacing. I've been stuck and had to use a cheque...can anyone beat that for crazy-things-I've-used-in-lieu-of-TP? Besides Triticus Toxicum's snow, of course...
-
Just the thought of having to...um...use snow for that purpose is making my bum crinkle. You know, like that feeling when you peer over a ledge at a thousand-foot drop? Bum-crinkling. I dunno how else to describe that.

Man, spandex leggings got me through both pregnancies, and they were very passe by then (mid-nineties). Just threw a huge, long sweater or blouse over them, and I was good to go. What a practical outfit that was...great for PMS or glutening bloat and/or sudden weight gain. Let's start a collective rally to bring leggings with big tops back!

ARCHIVED Please Support Each Other, Not Start Wars
elye replied to Queen Serenity's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hear, Hear, Lisa! There's so much good stuff that's going on here, and that has gone on for so long--it always overshadows (at least for me) the odd silly bickering that occurs on threads that take care of themselves and peter out... -
ARCHIVED Optimistic...
elye replied to Scheherazade's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome, Scheherezade! Just one more quick thing--many who are celiac find that it takes not just weeks, but MONTHS before they feel a real improvement. I'm sure there are many who stop the gluten-free diet in frustration, understandably believing that "hey, it's been all summer and I'm still tired/depressed/constipated. It CAN'T be the gluten"! Ya gotta...
