ARCHIVED To All The "lurkers" Out There...
elye replied to Lisa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think I probably lurked for a while when I first found you amazing people, but once I posted a few times, I just haven't been able to stop. Laughter is the most important thing in my life (right alongside love!), and I get so much of it here. For the newbie lurkers, just hold your breath and leap in...you'll be exhilerated and rewarded a million fold... -
ARCHIVED Too Funny Not To Post
elye replied to VegasCeliacBuckeye's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
What a hysterical thread... I am always perplexed when I am in someone's bathroom and I see lots of magazines stacked in there, or when I hear about people reading while sitting there. It is one of the most uncomfortable seats around...why would anyone want to stay sitting in there, above a rising smell, on a hard seat? I just want to go and get the... -
ARCHIVED My Current Diet
elye replied to holdthegluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If you're already doing almonds, just doubling the amount will increase your caloric intake immensely...I have the opposite problem--I have to keep my weight from creeping up, and have such trouble limiting my nuts! They add up very quickly--especially almonds. Throw some raisins in with them. As was already said, grapes are a highish-calorie fruit. And... -
ARCHIVED Where Did It All Begin?
elye replied to Lailalachina's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
One of the amazing things about this disease, and perhaps most aggravating, is the vast differences in symptoms, time of onset, test results, etc. within its afflicted group. I had NO symptoms of celiac when I was diagnosed (I had sub-clinical low iron, that was it)...and therefore no obvious triggers. I suppose I was just living quietly with intestinal... -
ARCHIVED Asymptomatic
elye replied to katbaloo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have been a type one diabetic for many years, and was diagnosed with celiac two years ago after a positive blood panel and then biopsy. I had NO symptoms of celiac...the diagnosis came right out of the blue. I had borderline low iron, but that was it. Since then I have learned how autoimmune diseases tend to cluster together: one in eight type one diabetics... -

ARCHIVED My Husband Tries To Be Gluten Free
elye replied to BamBam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ahhhhh.....diabetes isn't awful. I've been type one for thirty-four years, tightly controlled for most of that time. Inconvenient, yes. Eye-opening, sure. But never awful... ...okay, sometimes yucky... First off, a much better thing to carry around for insulin reactions is a pack of glucose tablets. They are available in the drug store, and... -
Yep. It's an important guideline...what might be interesting for you is to see (if and when you get back on the treadmill) is what your coasting, feel-like-I'm-working-hard heart rate is on the treadmill versus the elliptical. Man, I've gotta have the resistance on VERY high and the incline all the way up on the elliptical for my heart to be pounding in...
-
The general guideline is: Your maximum heart rate is (approximately) 220 minus your age. This is the number of beats per minute that your heart beats at its absolute fastest. But that is an average...if you are in great shape, your maximum is higher. Now, a good zone to be in for the duration of a cardio workout, a zone that is optimal for cardiovascular...
-
I've never put much faith in the calorie readouts on the cardio machines...if I did, I would be getting nearly twice the workout on the elliptical machine that I do on the treadmill (17 cal/minute versus 10.5 on the treadmill). I know I am working harder when I am running at six miles an hour than when I'm skiing on the elliptical at level six with the incline...

ARCHIVED Celiac Without Bowel Symptoms
elye replied to Rebecca150's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The positive blood panel that came back for me two years ago completely floored me--in fact, I was sure they had mixed up my results with someone else's, because the only symptom I had was low iron. No GI stuff, no brain stuff, no aches... -
ARCHIVED Need To Expand Diet
elye replied to SillyBoo's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I don't have a problem with raw veggies, but when my parents come over for supper and I am making a salad, I cook all the chopped veggies that I'm including in it beforehand (carrots, zuchinni) and then add the raw ones (tomato, cucumber, mushroom), as my mom can't handle hard stuff with all her false teeth. And instead of tomato I'll often put in sliced... -
Wow...this all tempts me to simply feed my animals human food, at least until everything is sorted out. Kind of tough with my cats, however. They don't seem to like anything I've ever given them that we're eating, including tuna or cheese...hmm...might be a challenge.

ARCHIVED Have You Guys Heard About The Pet Food?
elye replied to JerryK's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know...I'm now swinging between both threads. I posted my question there... -
Peter, Thank you for that terrific post. I have just written on another thread that I'm confused (who isn't!) as to whether I can continue feeding my dog and two cats their kibble. News last night stated that there was testing to begin on dry food, but it was just mentioned and seemed rather vague. You said that Menu does not manufacture any dry foods...

ARCHIVED Have You Guys Heard About The Pet Food?
elye replied to JerryK's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sorry, I'm joining this thread late, and maybe this has already been discussed...but I doubt it because this is news that came out last night. Are we now having to stop feeding our animals the Menu dry foods as well? Both my dog and two cats are on President's Choice and Ol' Roy kibble. Don't know what to think. -
I'd like to second Maureen's request for info on what tests to ask for when getting genetic testing done. My son's checkup is next week, and although his blood panel was negative, I'd also like to have this done. I haven't heard any gastro or GP or haemotologist (and I've spoken to a few!) mention anything about the genetic test for celiac. I have only...

ARCHIVED What To Do With The 'pharmacy'
elye replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
In Canada, all of the big pharmacies take back old/unused meds, and advertise this aplenty. I have often heard pharmacists say to NEVER let prescription meds enter the water system. I wonder what they do with the stuff? -
I love quinoa and kasha, but as they are grains, I've abandoned them. The glycemic index is a chart I know so well that my kids play a game where they'll yell out a food and I've got to respond immediately with its number. They don't stump me too often... Ursula, if you're out there, I remember some time ago in a post you remarked that one can easily...
-
I need advice on a nutitional crux I'm facing. I'm a long-term type one diabetic, and as a result have always watched my grain intake due to glycemic load issues. Since being diagnosed with celiac two years ago, I've gradually eliminated all grain, so that now I only have a bit of rice or corn on rare occasion. My blood sugars are, no surprise, stellar...

ARCHIVED Intolerance Or Allergy?
elye replied to elye's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Jeez, what do I know, but I would have guessed that you likely had a false negative for celiac, as we know how common that can be. Curiouser and curiouser... I am often asked what the difference is between gluten/wheat allergy and gluten intolerance. By the sounds of things, I had the difference correct (histamines vs. antibodies) but the symptoms can... -
ARCHIVED Intolerance Or Allergy?
elye posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was talking to a lady today, and the topic of food came up. I mentioned that I am celiac, and she then told me that she is also limited in her diet because she is allergic to wheat. She was diagnosed by a naturopath after having GI issues (cramps, bloating, D) just like us. I said that this sounded more like an autoimmune reaction than an allergic one... -
ARCHIVED Human Physical Charateristics
elye replied to deedub's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Contrary to the old school way of thinking diagnostically, celiacs can just as easily be obese as rail-thin. Just the other day I met a lady who is very overweight and going in for the celiac blood panel. She's certain that she's gluten intolerant. -
ARCHIVED American Idol Fans?
elye replied to blueeyedmanda's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I've only had time to read the last couple of pages, so forgive me if this has already come up, but does anybody here actually phone in and vote? I'm in Canada, so I can't, but I sure would, just to pad the votes against Sanjaya... -
Oh, I am so sorry. For me, one of the toughest things about living through this level of grief was to try very hard not to feel smothering guilt when, after a year or two had passed, I found I was able to go a few hours without thinking of him. This will be later for you, but maybe it's a good thing to mention now... [[[[[[[...
