ARCHIVED Wheat In Face Creams
CMCM replied to CMCM's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I emaiiled Clinique for a list of all their wheat products but haven't received an answer yet. Meanwhile, 3 that I was using that have wheat listed are: Repairwear Day SPF Intensive cream, Repairwear Deep Wrinkle Concentrate for face and eye, and Repairwear intensive eye cream. I don't know about the Dramatically Different one. My mom used it for a long... -
ARCHIVED Wheat In Face Creams
CMCM posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Do any of your get specific reactions if you use a facial cream/lotion etc. with wheat in it? Anything truly noticeable? Or do you just avoid it in principle? Just curious about how strict one has to be with these things.....all my favorite Clinique creams have wheat in them. -
ARCHIVED Dairy Intolerance
CMCM replied to CMCM's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had always felt certain I was at least lactose (milk sugar) intolerant, perhaps because so much is written about it it seemed logical. I would take the lactaid pills when I ate a lot of dairy. I had a vague sense that if the lactaid pills helped at all, it wasn't by much. I never thought about it further (or didn't know about casein), but I've had problems... -
ARCHIVED Lactose Intolerance & Possible Celiac?
CMCM replied to Brooke-'s topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Brooke, I had virtually ALL your symptoms for years, and worse the last few years. I had always thought I was lactose intolerant...my problems with dairy went back to birth. Although my mom is celiac, I never suspected that for myself because I never completely identified reactions with wheat....I was eating it pretty much daily, after all. And I didn't... -
ARCHIVED How Important Is Testing?
CMCM replied to Maureen's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have come to believe that the gene testing is actually very important. My mother has celiac. Now I know that I do too. My children have a 50% chance of having the gene as well, but they don't appear to have all the symptoms (yet) although they DO have some suspicious symptoms that fit what I read in Dangerous Grains and other books. My son had a blood... -
ARCHIVED Questions To Bring To Celiac Specialist
CMCM replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
For what it's worth, the author of Dangerous Grains says many people who study celiac disease believe that there should not be TWO names (i.e. celiac disease and gluten sensitivity). He feels it should ALL be designated as gluten sensitivity, that they are not really two separate things. -
ARCHIVED Dairy Intolerance
CMCM posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
In addition to the celiac gluten diagnosis, now I also find that I am casein sensitive. Has anyone read about this....does having dairy when you are intolerant to it create intestinal damage similar to what happens with gluten? Or can you get away with having it occasionally? -
ARCHIVED How Important Is Testing?
CMCM replied to Maureen's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would really recommend that you get the book "Dangerous Grains" (Amazon). It will really educate you about the whole wheat/gluten connection. One symptom that can be caused by eating gluten is most definitely depression. This book lists 200 conditions that may be connected to gluten and which are either relieved greatly or eliminated by a gluten-free... -
ARCHIVED Most Annoying Comments/questions
CMCM replied to carriecraig's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I suppose I would have cared what people thought when I was younger, but frankly, at this point in my life I couldn't care less what anyone thinks about what I eat or don't eat. I'll just say "Sorry, can't eat that." No more explanation offered. If asked,I'll say "I can't eat wheat." End of discussion. People are insensitive, they are usually clueless... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Results Back
CMCM posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, I got my Enterolab results back. I'm not sure how to interpret things, though. If anyone has insights into this, let me know. Things were positive, which I suppose I expected, though. ________ Gluten Sensitivity Testing Fecal Antigliadin IgA 24 Units (Normal Range <10 Units) Fecal Antitissue Transglutaminase IgA 1... -
ARCHIVED Questions To Bring To Celiac Specialist
CMCM replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Claire...did you have a biopsy then? Is that how you know you have intestinal damage. I wonder of OTHER sensitivities also cause intestinal damage....maybe gluten isn't the only substance that can do that. Ultimately, I'm wondering if people shouldn't just start with the most basic of diets, then add various things into the diet one by one to see what... -
ARCHIVED Member Poll - Who Abstains From Other Foods Besides Gluten?
CMCM replied to Jeepster's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That's interesting about potatoes....that's exactly the reaction I get. Not as bad with a baked potato, but as I said, mashed are killer for me. I haven't noticed tomatoes causing migraines for me, but it happenen enough when I would eat spaghetti with meat/tomato sauce....horrible stomach pain, burning. Of course, it could have been the pasta.....but... -
ARCHIVED Member Poll - Who Abstains From Other Foods Besides Gluten?
CMCM replied to Jeepster's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ursula...I'm curious what kind of reactions you get from potatoes. I have trouble with them myself....the worst are mashed although I can't imagine why that would make a big difference. But mashed definitely upsets me more than a baked potato. And tomatoes can bother me....a small amount of raw tomato isn't a problem, but the cooked tomatoes do...like... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Reaction And Constipation
CMCM replied to jojoe72's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had never tried flax seeds at all, but then I kept getting these things in the mail from all these doctors who have newsletters....Dr. Christiane Northrup was one, Dr. Weil was another....and they were all pushing the flax seeds. They claimed the golden ones tasted better and milder and had other good qualities which I've since forgotten. Anyhow, here... -
ARCHIVED Speedy Reaction Question
CMCM posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, I'm kind of curious about this. I thought (but maybe I'm wrong on this) that reactions occurred when food reaches the intestines. Yet, I have had reactions with severe cramping and D very soon after eating...too quickly (or so I thought) for the offending food to have reached the intestines. So what goes on here? Other times, my reactions have... -
ARCHIVED New Bread Machine W/gluten Free Setting!
CMCM replied to CMCM's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
No...I haven't ordered it. Like you, I already have a machine, not all that used even though I've had it a couple of years. I'm waiting for it to bite the dust before I get another one. I haven't tried any gluten free breads in it yet....if they are a colossal failure maybe I'll re-think this, especially if that new machine seems to be wildly better for... -
Every so often, maybe once a week or once every couple of weeks, I simply will NOT be able to get to sleep at all. I will be awake all night long. My body might feel tired, but I just can't seem to fall asleep. Sometimes I just lay there, sometimes I get up and do things, read, watch TV, do whatever, but then maybe at about 5:00 or 6:00 in the morning...

ARCHIVED Gluten Reaction And Constipation
CMCM replied to jojoe72's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi...I'm still working on this too! Big problem sometimes! One think I think helps is this, and personally I think it tastes great. I buy a bottle of pure cranberry juice, nothing but cranberry (hard to find). It is too strong to drink straight, so I take a pictcher of water which I'll keep in the fridge, probably about a litre or so, then I mix in about... -
ARCHIVED Thoughts On Food And Intolerances/sensitivities
CMCM posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've been thinking about all the various foods that are problematic for people...and also thinking about mother nature and the animal world....animals in nature, that is. If you think about it, each species tends towards certain limited foods. Panda bears almost exclusively eat bamboo leaves. Lions in the wild eat meat. Horses eat grasses. Each animal... -
ARCHIVED Positive Blood Test.....
CMCM replied to wolfie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't know how old you are and how long you've been bothered by symptoms, but it seems that some people can get away with eating gluten for quite a long time. I did. I had a bunch of things from birth, and then it seems I was doing OK all thru my teens and 20's, but stuff starting happening in my 30's. Migraines, for one. Vague digestive problems that... -
ARCHIVED Positive Blood Test.....
CMCM replied to wolfie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, look at it this way: If you stopped eating all gluten and felt great as a result, and then if your doctor said your tests didn't show celiac disease so you can eat gluten and when you do eat gluten you get sick and feel terrible again, which way of eating would you follow? Wouldn't you rather feel better? The only thing FOR ME that makes "knowing... -
ARCHIVED Costs Of Blood Tests For Celiac Panel
CMCM replied to Roberta's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was trying to figure out what to do myself, and since I have high-deductible insurance, I knew I'd basically have to pay for any blood tests. In our area is a laboratory aimed at people who don't have insurance or who want to test at an economical rate....They told me they had two tests, one a gluten antibody test and one a gluten sensitivity test. One... -
ARCHIVED Most Annoying Comments/questions
CMCM replied to carriecraig's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
OK..go out and eat pizza and throw up on him. Then he'd get the picture! Seriously, people without major allergies or sensitivities just don't get it. They think it's a big nothing that you can ignore if you want to. My son has peanut allergy, and we've gotten comments like "But can he eat peanut BUTTER?" Sigh. -
ARCHIVED What Could This Be?
CMCM replied to danikali's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This has been an ongoing problem for me for a good 20 years. It comes and goes, and I've never quite been able to figure out what triggers it. I'll be fine one day, then the next wake up with this and sometimes it has lasted for weeks or even months, although at its worst it's usually a shorter time frame. Because it went away within a couple of days of... -
ARCHIVED Qualified Doctor
CMCM replied to Packard's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My GP vaguely "knew what celiac was", and one day I walked into a GI's office (where I had had a colonoscopy 6 months ago) and asked about testing for celiac disease, and they scrambled around to find some sort of answer and finally came up with some vague statement about blood tests, and said "no, we don't have any celiac patients". Right then and there...
