  1. Find a new GI or just try the gluten-free diet. The GI you went to is not good. IBS should stand for "I Be Stumped" (on behalf of the doctor). It is a non-diagnosis. Medications won't help and neither will the diet they recommend. I was diagnosed with colitis and IBS, and first told to eat a low fiber diet, heavy on things like cream of wheat and white...
  2. So, if I read your post right, you're still gluten-free, but gave up on dairy free. You're right - this could be causing your symptoms. Some people are permanently sensitive to dairy - you might be one of them. Try cutting out ALL dairy again and see if it helps. You might have other intolerances too - soy and corn are also very common.
  3. I've made tortillas before, but it's been a long time. I used my normal brown rice, potato starch and tapioca starch with xanthan gum. I did use about 1-1/2 tsp. of xanthan gum per cup of flour, if I remember right. They turned out okay - I was just thinking about trying them again. Good luck!
  4. Hi everyone! Patti - glad you made and like the brownies. Just don't make them too often! I hope you can get your weight off too. Autumn - I usually am somewhat careful with my sodium, since I have a kidney disease (that's in remission). I don't restrict it drastically, but I don't overly salt anything or eat very salty things. I do tend to...
  5. "When wild ducks are fed human foods their organs become engorged and fatty on the inside and they quickly die from malnutrition, heart disease, liver problems and other health complications. An overfed, malnutritioned duck is sluggish and can't escape from predators." How interesting! Sounds like a large percentage of our human population. Maybe no...
  6. Hi Drewskie. I just realized that I'm in the teenagers only section, so I hope you forgive me. I have a 15 yo daughter and 12 yo son who are also gluten-free. It's hard at first, but you and your mom will get the hang of it. My other 2 kids (13 and 9) eat gluten-free at home and we have almost everything that we had before going gluten-free. We just...
  7. Welcome, Michelle! It sure sounds like you've come to the right place. You have a few options to think about. 1) You can continue to eat gluten and insist on getting tested for Celiac (blood work and possible endoscopy). Something to think about with this option is that you might be Non-Celiac gluten intolerant, rather than Celiac, and the tests...
  8. Welcome, Sissy! I hope we can get the thread going a little more actively again. I've been doing horribly the past few days. I've gained the 5 pounds again. I've been working out, but I've just been eating too much. It's so hard to lose and keep off and so easy to put back on that I'm just disgusted with myself that I've "fallen off the wagon". ...
  9. I let my (then) 11 year old son go off and on the diet for a few months while we were trying to figure it all out. We had off and on episodes of stomach aches, bad behavior, emotional outbursts, etc. and finally decided that we were crazy to not see the clear signs. He's strictly gluten-free now and is doing great. I met Dr. Fine in person a couple of...
  10. I can't remember if they sang together first or not. Her name is Shyamali. She's getting as many searches as Sanjaya these days. The thing I remember about the auditions is that Shyamali went first and made it. Then Sanjaya went in. They asked him who was the better singer and he said, "my sister is". After he sang, the judges (I think Simon first...
  11. Boptimistic - There's a recipe on here somewhere for gluten-free pelmini. Just do a search. I make them fairly often and they are really similar to pierogies. There's very few things you really have to do without once you get the hang of it.
  12. I was glad to see Sanjaya go too. I hope Chris and Phil go the next two weeks. Something I wanted to point out about Sanjaya. He's only a 17 year old kid who hasn't finished going through puberty yet. (Sure, Jordin is the same age, but girls mature faster than boys and she was already working as a plus-size model and had been on tour with a contemporary...
  13. I didn't get to see all of it, but I thought that Melinda was great and Blake wasn't. Phil seemed more at home with this type of music, but I still don't like him. Jordin was the only other one that I thought was any good.
  14. You might try giving your cat some canned "cat" tuna, raw eggs and meat. We feed our dog mostly raw meat and I've never worried about him being sick. I know lots of people do this for their cats too. It's "species appropriate" - they wouldn't cook their food if they lived in the wild. Trader Joe's has the cat tuna and it's only 29 cents a can here....
  15. Welcome back, Shirley! Sorry your mom is having such trouble. Patti - I hope your stomach has calmed down. I was bad today . I didn't eat any sugar or anything "fun", I just ate too much of everything. I guess I was celebrating overtime after going to my physical yesterday and realizing that I've lost 18 pounds on the doctor's scale since...
  16. Welcome to the board! I'm sure someone will come along with more information for you, but I wanted to say hi and respond. It sounds like going gluten-free would be a great idea for the whole family - even if all their tests come back negative. Going gluten-free is actually a lot easier if the whole family does it. I have 4 kids and we are all gluten...
  17. Welcome Kristine! I hope we can give you some support for weight loss as well as encouragement to stay gluten-free. I think we all know first hand the bad effects of eating gluten. Diana - apology accepted. Interesting that you've done research on elderberries. We actually take elderberry syrup (Sambucol). The oil of oregano that we always swear...
  18. I used to have anxiety attacks that I thought were heart or thyroid problems. It took a while before I realized what they were. I would get chest pain, dizziness, etc. I haven't had even one since going fanatically gluten-free. I don't technically have Celiac though - just VERY gluten intolerant.
  19. So sorry you're feeling bad. I see on your other thread that you just started the gluten-free diet this month. It takes most people more than 2 weeks to feel significantly better, so you're not alone. Breathe, relax, don't worry about your career right now. I was told to make a career change 11 years ago, but my health has improved so much that I'm healthier...
  20. Karen, I know that there is a recipe for gluten-free Matzoh in this section from before Passover. That would be a great thing to use, since it's what Jesus used in the last supper (I do know that His wasn't gluten-free). I was thinking of doing the same thing, since I haven't had communion in years. I'm not Catholic, so I don't think it would be a big...
  21. Hi all! Cathy - Mmm - Kumara sounds like the sweet potatoes we call yams - I love them. I thought of you today when I was eating a Kiwi fruit. Autumn - I just found out that there will be a GIG awareness walk and gluten-free food festival here in May. I'm excited about it and hope we can all go. I got back on track today eating wise. I realized...
  22. 1. Passing Krispy Kreme almost every day and knowing that I will NEVER be able to eat one. 2. Knowing that 2 of my kids will never get to eat a Krispy Kreme. 3. Explaining that white flour comes from wheat - AGAIN! 4. Trying to get my 12 year old son to understand that this is for his good - I'm not being mean to insist that he not cheat. edit- by...
  23. You could have EVERY symptom of Celiac Disease, including other autoimmune problems, but not have it. BUT, that doesn't mean that you don't have Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance, which is really just as bad. You sound exactly like me - I was SURE that I had it and was shocked when my gene test showed that I didn't have either of the main genes. Of course...
  24. Welcome back, Patti! Good to "see" you. Hopefully you'll get your motivation back soon - and maybe I'll get mine back. I had lost 12 pounds and was so excited. Easter was supposed to be my "free" day for last week and I totally overate. Then my SIL gave me some yummy gluten-free cookies and I cheated on Monday. When I weighed myself I'd gained ...
  25. Excuse me? I really don't appreciate your tone. I take very good care of my kids and give them extra vitamins and herbs. Until this bout with the flu, 3 of them have had perfect attendance or only one day absence for a few years. You have NO RIGHT to act like this - this is a weight loss support thread, not a thread to give your unsolicited, judgmental...
