ARCHIVED Recurrent Tonsillitis
lonewolf replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had recurrent tonsilitis for years - long before I knew anything about Celiac. I ended up getting my tonsils out at age 23. If I had known then what I know now, I think I could have avoided it by changing my diet then. My naturopath said that she sees people with chronic tonsilitis get better when they are diagnosed with food allergies and eliminate... -
ARCHIVED Soy Free. gluten-free Dark Chocolate?
lonewolf replied to lisaemu's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Do you react to soy lecithin? I'm intolerant to soy, but can handle the lecithin. The Food Allergy and Anaphylactic Network (FAAN) says that the soy lecithin isn't usually problematic for people who are sensitive to soy. -

ARCHIVED What Is Your Most Annoying Symptom?
lonewolf replied to erin24's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Umm, Ummmm, it's ummm,... What was the question again? Oh yeah- most annoying symptom. It's that problem where you try to think of a word, you know, you're trying to think of the right word to say, what is that word that means you can't think of the right word? I think I have problems with word retrieval and brain fog the most - I used to think of myself... -
I agree that you need to use real butter or margarine - not vegetable spread. Also, you probably need to use at least 1 tsp. of xanthan gum to help them stick together better. I use at least 1-1/2 tsp. for my cookies and they don't crumble.

ARCHIVED gluten-free/df Breakfast Ideas?
lonewolf replied to VydorScope's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think Pacific is gross - it's nutty and bitter. The Almond Breeze is smooth and tasty - not too sweet. I think it's available in most areas. It's put out by the Blue Diamond almond people. It's worth finding - even my milk drinking kids at home like it for things like cocoa and in french toast. -

Have you tried Almond Breeze Original, Unsweetened Original or Unsweetened Vanilla? These are all better than any other type of rice or soy or almond milk. If you don't like them on your cereal you can use them for baking, so you wouldn't lose your money. -
The local health food store didn't have an opening in their meeting room when it worked for me. They have it reserved for a group called "The Ghost Chasers" or something. I'll try again in late spring. I've ended up so busy with my 4 kids, teaching part-time, coaching basketball and cooking that I haven't had a chance to look for another place. Hope your...

ARCHIVED Non-soy Non-dairy Milks? Whats Safe?
lonewolf replied to VydorScope's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I understand that carageenan might not be the best stuff in the world, but right now it's a minor problem in the grand scope of my life. Most people here probably feel the same. I already can't eat gluten, dairy, eggs, and soy, avoid sugar (mostly), pork, beef, hydrogenated fats, artificial colors and flavors, preservatives, sulfites, nitrites, etc. A person... -
ARCHIVED Non-soy Non-dairy Milks? Whats Safe?
lonewolf replied to VydorScope's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Almond Breeze just has a small amount of soy lecithin, which even the Food Allergy and Anaphylactic Network says is safe for most people with soy allergies. I avoid soy, but I don't worry about lecithin in such small amounts. That said, I really like Almond Breeze. It has WAY less carbs that any brand of rice milk and tastes better than most. I like to... -
My doctor said that it will float if you eat a lot of fiber also.

ARCHIVED Donut Recipe Desperately Needed!
lonewolf replied to lonewolf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I ended up making cake doughnuts, deep fried, and had success. My son is happy with the way they taste. Actually all my kids liked them. They were better warm - they taste a little dry this morning- but Caleb happily took a couple in his lunch. This weekend I plan to try the recipe for "Glo Bits", when I have more time. The yeast recipes look good too... -

ARCHIVED Gluten And Casein Free Probiotics
lonewolf replied to terps19's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This is good news! I'm holding a bottle of it right now and it lists barley grass as the first ingredient - they must have changed their "recipe" since I bought it. My bottle also says "100% vegetarian", but not "gluten-free". -
ARCHIVED Donut Recipe Desperately Needed!
lonewolf replied to lonewolf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks everyone! I'm at work and not really supposed to be spending much time on the computer. I should have time to make one, or more of these recipes tonight and tomorrow morning - thanks for helping and saving me the time of researching. -
ARCHIVED Donut Recipe Desperately Needed!
lonewolf posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
My 11 year old son, who is gluten-free, dairy-free, needs a substitute for donuts tomorrow because his class is having a Krispy Kreme sale. I thought it was next week and would have time to research. Does anyone have a recipe for either fried or baked donuts that might work? I am good at baking and don't mind a tricky recipe. There are no stores in this... -
ARCHIVED Beware Of Soy!
lonewolf replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I don't think that small amounts of soy are what is harmful. Using soy baby formula, drinking large quantities of soy milk or relying on soy for most of your protein needs is the danger. Small amounts like in soy sauce, soy lecithin etc. are not going to be harmful unless you are highly allergic. -

ARCHIVED Mashed Potatoes
lonewolf replied to NOBREAD4ME's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Sorry I didn't see this question earlier. I make my own gravy. It's easy. I use chicken broth and thicken it with rice flour (white or brown) or corn starch. Mix the flour in with some water, make sure it's mixed well, then stir it into the broth just before it boils. I cook by look and feel, so it's hard to give an exact recipe, but I'm sure any cookbook... -

ARCHIVED Almost Ice Cream
lonewolf replied to Claire's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Judy, Don't worry about the big type. Hope you can read mine. I have the coconut sorbet. I got mine at Trader Joe's too, but it was in January or early February, since they haven't been selling it here since then. No red type on mine. This is so weird. I wonder if it's a cross-contamination problem? I don't think it could be too much soy - probably... -
ARCHIVED Almost Ice Cream
lonewolf replied to Claire's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm holding a carton right now and there is no mention of soy anywhere on it. I'm on the West coast. I've been eating this for a couple of years and NEVER had a problem and I avoid soy. I looked on Sharon's website and couldn't find any information and also looked on another website that listed all the ingredients and soy isn't listed anywhere. -
ARCHIVED Beware Of Soy!
lonewolf replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm certainly no expert, but from what I've read, a lot of the research on soy has been done in Asian countries. They usually ferment their soy products, which makes it more digestible and neutralizes acids (phytic acid, I think) that are harmful. The fact that their soy is fermented has been largely ignored. Also, a lot of research and health claims have... -
Can you share your pizza crust recipe? Mine is okay, but always looking for something better. Premade isn't an option for me either. Last time I made pizza I got distracted and left the baking powder out (it's a biscuit type crust) and it was like a giant dry noodle. My kids got a good laugh out of it at least as we scraped the toppings off.
