  1. What is safe to add to coffee in convenience stores?? I've been to one of those "make your own coffee" stations in convenience stores twice....Dont' THINK I've reacted to any of the additives......but may have just gotten lucky.

    Any cautions on doing this??

If your MSG sensitive avoid alot of the non dairy creamers which contain sodium casinate. You might react to it like MSG. I know I do.

  2. I have read some of the threads about the SCD diet. Can anyone post some links on where to find SCD recipes that do not contain dairy? I know the dairy in the diet is lactose free, but I am going to try to avoid all dairy. I just need some substitutions for the dairy ingredients. I just ordered the Breaking the Vicious Cycle book and I saw that Amazon has a Grain-free cookbook. But again, it is difficult to make the recipes when they call for butter, yogurt, cheese, cream, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I find this diet hard to follow being dairy free. Eating the yogurt seems to be key. You can find out how to make the yogurt by using coconut milk or almond milk but I don't know how its done. I only have that advice so invest in a yogurt maker and google yogurt made with other milks like coconut and almond.

  3. I don't think you got rid of the infection and sadly you have to get back on the anti-bac.s. Get to doctor and deal with it because it will only get worse. Then when your done with the meds get a good gluten free and it helps if you can eat sugar free yogurt. Just plain yogurt. It will bring the balance back in your intestines. You will of killed off all the bad but good bacteria taking the anti-bac.s.

  4. Lisa,

How special that bond must of been between your uncle and you. That tells me he although his life on this earth was brief he bonded with those he was close too. It makes me want to be a better aunt to all my nieces and nephews. I love them but I don't think they really know that. Its funny how it just takes a moment to go up to a little one look in their eyes and truely look interested in whats going on, joke around and let them know that they were noticed. Not much but do we do it....I don't do it enough. Hugs going out to you and I'm very sorry he was taken so young.

  5. Katherine, thank you for the information. My stylist does not use a two step process -- she uses bleach in foils, and she also only does the roots. My hair is naturally pretty frizzy, so maybe it's just my hair, but it seems that the bleach makes it worse. Is the bleach alone without the toner still harder on the hair than color?

Debmidge, that's funny about your sister. I don't perm my hair .... it's just curly!

So, what do you think ladies, is color safer than non-toned bleach? Or will both still cause too much damage to successfully grow my hair out. My stylist tells me my hair is in very good shape, actually, it's just I'm a perfectionist.

I've noticed the trend seems to be getting away from highlighted hair and finding the natural hair color. The only example I can think of is Kelly Preston, John Travolta's wife. I think its healthier. But you hair looks healthy from your pic.s Carla.

I'm also one that hates people messing with my hair. My hair is thick, curley and very tangle and I can hear rips when my stylist combs it after the wash. I started to dread making the appt.s and a couple of times I'd be late which really ticks your stylist off if you'd ever noticed.

So I started to cut my own hair last year. I wanted to grow out all the layers and just have one length. Its not that hard! I color my own hair with no problem but I like the advice about coloring just the roots because I do alittle more then the roots and I think I'll have problems down the road.

I was watching that judge Amy show last week and her mother on the show played by Tye Daley (sp?) caught my eye. It's grey and really long but she wears it in a low knot in the back of her head. I like it. That's how I want mine to look in 10 years. I'll be happy to give up the coloring.

  6. I only use Lame Advertisement products for all my cleaning supplies (laundry, dishes, floors, bathtub, first-aid supplies, etc.). They are all natural, and the laundry detergent and fabric softener (dryer sheets or liquid) come in scented and unscented.

They are all non-toxic, even if a child would drink their dishwasher detergent, it wouldn't harm the kid. If a child even sticks a finger into the other stuff and licks it, it might kill the child!

I used to get terribly itchy all over, and have been fine since using their stuff. I still get sick from their cleaners, because they emit salicylates, but not like with the chemical cleaners, which made me sick to my stomach and gave me a migraine.

Check out their site: Open Original Shared Link

This is what I use also. What it has going for it is the tea tree oil because it kills bacteria. Very good to know when your in the mist of the cold and flu season. I love this stuff.

I didn't have time today to take a shower in the morning although I took one last night I didn't worry about it. But I did something I never do and sprayed just alittle perfume on. I actually feel like my head is detached and my nose has been running all day. I can't wait to get home and shower. I tried to wipe it off but didn't work.

Never again! The only thing I like is a lightly scented body lotion from bath and body works called Japanese cherry blossom. Its real light and pleasant. Otherwise everything is as unscented as I can get it.

Another hint is I bring in natural scents from the outdoors in my house. I like to put pine tree branches in a bowl with pine cones. A bowl of apples and cinnamon sticks. Oranges stuck with cloves. Some essential oils are good. In fact if you get a small slow cooker ( I don't know if they make them anymore) fill it with hot water and a few drops of your favorite essential oil it makes your whole house smell wonderful and keeps the germs away too. I read it somewhere that during the plague where it was spreading across Europe and people were dying, a small area in France stayed clear of it. It was because of the fields of flowers and lavender they grew. It apparently has an aseptic of its own along with the wonderful scent. Well if you like lavender, its not my favorite.

Alttle goes along way, and go for very light scents that agree with you.

I agree with you on the dryer sheets....yuck

  7. Today I was at a large grocery store here in WI. and noticed that all the spinach was gone except the organic in the clear tubs. So just to be sure I asked if these have been safe. He told me the organic is not on the list (the brand they sell is Newmans) of banned spinach. He told me that they knew spinach was causing problems since late august but they weren't told to remove until it hit the news. Sheesh I couldn't believe that.

  8. I do have a theory but I think its a bit "conspiracy" but not really conspiracy.

Basically I think we are trained to eat what is easiest to produce, store and transport in bulk.

Of course marketing and advertising play a huge part but I think it goes beyond this.

Firstly economics has shut out the small producers, its cheaper to mass produce and the efficiency increases as you own the whole chain from growing through transport and distribution.

The competition is virtually non existant..and what there is is between big name brands and mostly over cost not quality. Living in France gives me a different perspective since the French like to preserve their "traditional" way of life and protect small farmers and producers though this itself is falling due to restrictions placed on protectionism.

Just stop and think at this point for a minute... sure we were all taught protectionism is BAD... and that the market can decide but its this what we really want for food! Do we want the most efficiently produced food of the lowest acceptable quality? This isn't cheap access to furniture or automobiles it is what we put in our bodies.

I was watching a TV show the other day where the mother comes in for the "family dinner" she has demanded everyone attend and I'm thinking wow what a great kitchen, then she pulls a ready meal out of a bag.

I've always heard that in France people have a different 'mind set' about life in general. I can only speak for what I see in America is its mostly all about the earning big incomes, having a more square feet in their homes with three stall garages, and just working too much. It leaves little time to prepare decent meals much less finding farmers that they can buy eggs and meat from. Besides it costs to much. I'm the only one I know that spends alot of money at the grocery store. Junk food is cheap and fast food is quick and that fits into the American way.

I loved watching Nigella's (sp) cooking show on the food channel here, although they have cancelled it now for about 2 yrs but I heard its coming back. She taught me how preparing food is every bit worth taking the time to buy the best quality and finding those eggs from farmers taking the time to roast a good quality cut of organic meat in the oven, choosing fresh organic grown vegetable and cooking with passion. I feel its a lost art and I'm sadden by it.

I also read the why french women don't get fat book that was a best seller in the US. That book says it all. We do have major anxieties about food. We are either binging or dieting and food is our enemy. I know few people who enjoy wine with their meals, and that to me goes along with the mind set that the meal is a time of celebration, a time to relax from your busy day, a time to enjoy family and friends and good conversation. Most people I know watch t.v. while they eat.

There was a segment on t.v on how the servings of food in America has changed in the last 20 yrs. They showed a cheeseburger in the 1980's and one you order now. The size is almost twice as big. What is going on!

    Oh well enough ranting.

  9. The theory behind food combining is your body digests a potato rather quickly, almost as quickly as sugar.

The protein is much more complicated taking more enzymes and a longer time in the stomach and small intestine. When you eat the same two in a meal the sugars from the potato gets held hostage and starts to ferment. The fermenting produces gas and all the discomfort you've described.

I know potatoes do this for me and I rarely eat them but rice is ok as long as its brown rice being that it requires a longer digesting time. I never have more then maybe 1/3 c. serving. I fill my plate up with the non-starchy veggies and about 4 or 5 ounces of meat and seem to do fine.

Some people have great digestions but mine isn't and I guess I have to live with it.

Oh I only have fruit if I have fruit (which I seem to avoid) is first thing is the morning or as a snack about 3 hrs after a meal and I only have fruit alone.

    Gas is so annoying :o

  10. Sorry Ursula {{{{{{{{{{{big hug}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}

We sure love you here. Don't let their comments get to you. I think they probably see how limited your foods are and they think they can get you to give in, like well its not working anyway. Let me tell you, your the strongest person I know on this board. Your will power blows everyone away. I could never eat like you.

I'd be eating chocolate by the truck loads. Besides your not doing this for you husband. Forget him your doing this for yourself. You can't let him bother you, I'm serious try not to think about his comments because it will only be distructive to your health. Your daughters, well when I was in my twenties I was still pretty self centered not having a whole lot of life experinces behind me yet.

You can do this Ursula don't give in or give up, keep looking up.

  11. I copied this quote:

" In the coming months we can expect to see a river of media hype expounding the virtues of Splenda/sucralose. We should not be fooled again into accepting the safety of a toxic chemical on the blessing of the FDA and saturation advertising. In terms of potential long-term human toxicity we should regard sucralose with its chemical cousin DDT, the insecticide now outlawed because of its horrendous long term toxicities at even minute trace levels in human, avian, and mammalian tissues."

I get real sick drinking Aspartame and always did. I never drink diet sodas because I generally feel sickly about an hour after. Thanks for this information. As a young girl in the 60's I spent my whole summer vacation in the park. Remember when they had "Parkies". I was infatuated with mine, he was probably 17 yrs. old and I followed him everywhere. Anyway our park had a big baseball diamond and they would come with a small tractor hauling this tank thing that sprayed DDT unto the field and into the air like a hugh cloud. The cloud would could over to us and I can even remember running in and out of the clouds.

Then I would walk home along the bay of Green Bay and smell all the chemicals that the papermills were pumping into the air. It would sting your throat some days.

Is it any wonder I'm chemical sensitive. I can't even tolorate the smell of bleach. I don't use cleaners at all. Just vinegar or Melaluca (sp) (its tea tree oil.)

I will once in a while have cozy shack tapioca pudding with splenda. I'll have to stop buying it although what kept me from eating it everyday was how it made me feel. Taste good though. :(

Thanks again for the heads up

  12. The one thing that I keep trying hoping to find one that doesn't nauseate me is B-vitamins. It gets me everytime. They say gluten free but still there is something in that vit. that gets me sick even smelling it.

I won't try anymore. I've bought so many brands. I just have to get them thru foods.

I also got nauseated drinking half a beer thinking it wasn't made from wheat. I thought barley was ok with me. Apparently not.

    Live and learn.

  13. Most people here seem to be Irish/Swedish/German. I am 100% pure blooded Croatian .... are there any other Eastern Euros/Slavic people out there with celiac disease?

Yes I am. My dad's father came over to the states from Yugoslavia. He's the puzzle in my family tree though because he was killed when my dad was just three. He had a brother but I don't know anything about him. So I don't know what kind of diseases he had or would of had. My grandma would never talk about him because as far as I know it there was a gambling debt he got into and was shot to death.

    Gail

  14. I never realized there was a connection to my vision problems and the celiac. My nightblindness got so bad I was afraid to drive anywhere after sunset. This came on very suddenly. I was also extremely light sensitive and that for me was also a migraine trigger. I can go outside now without shades but still don't drive at night. When I complained to my eye doctor prediagnosis about my vision problems the jerk told me I needed to 'get off drugs' and my vision would improve. Bear in mind I was taking about 6 prescriptions at the time but the doc ignored that and accused me of using illegeal drugs instead. I cryed for days. I only went back once more, after the celiac diagnosis to tell him about it and let him know how much his assumption hurt.

I can't believe how rude that doctor was. It never fails to amaze me.

I have had night-blindness for years now. I first noticed it when we got to the movie theater late and the movie had started. I was with my husband and I thought like him we could whisk down the aisle and spot two seats with the glare of the movie screen. Well he could, but I stood paralyzed because I couldn't see to walk. He had to come back up the aisle to get me.

I have night lights to naviagate me to the bathroom at night.

Oh yeah I hate bright lights. The worse......a fresh coat of snow on a bright sunny morning and the glare of the melting ice. Ouch.

  15. Fiddle-Faddle

I just did a google search on wild salmon versus farm raised salmon & alot of info comes. Try health castle.com

Farm raised salmon containes PCB's & are given alot of antibiotics because they are in small quarters being raised so that in its self makes them more sickly so hence the antibiotics come into play. I order all my fish from Alaska direct. I have bought from WHole Foods the day it comes in & freeze it.I still have a supply from my journey there last summer. We caught alot of salmon & halibut.I'm hoping I don't have to mail order for months yet...........

    mamaw

I agree Mamaw. I'll never eat farm raised salmon. I don't see where its good for you. I'll be even more graphic. All those fish trying to swim in this small area but can't. They end up practically eating their own poop because how do you clean that out. Anything penned up are stressed and if humans get sick under stress doesn't make sense animals and fish do? So your eating sick fish that are fatty because they can't move and swimming in a toilet :) They do dye them so they at least look good. Oh well,... sorry if I spoiled you dinners.

    I'll shut up now. ;)

  16. I am going to buy both books, but on his website thepaleodiet.com/faqs, he states "We go on record as stating that Pre-Agricultural people ate few or no grains, however we have never suggested that they did not eat tubers." Like I said, I am buying the book this weekend, and I think I'll compare it with BTVC too (which I will try to find). Then, my master plan is to tailor to my needs.

I'll definitely let you all know how I feel.... and I hope peppers stay in the diet.... :D

I'm close to this diet also and have been most of the summer. However the changes I've made are all vegetables except potatoes (I just don't do well with them) and when I eat carrots and root veggies they're in small amts. I also added rice in small amts. I felt I needed the B vits. I did really good except a few times where I wasn't eating fruit and my carbs got too low. I couldn't sleep at night because of it. I need a certain levels of carbs to produce serotonin which turns to melatonin at night to sleep.

I added dairy back into my diet 6 weeks ago. I wanted to gain weight. Well I did which is good and now I'm at the weight I like....120 for my 5'7" frame but I don't like the gas I get having it. So I don't know what I'll do. I'm probably going to cut it out again and see if I start losing, hopefully not.

I haven't bought the book but I will eventually. I read off Internet sites. I always end up editing it for my own needs anyway so it keeps me from really adapting the philosophy of it all. I never entered any discussion groups about it although I read them. I do believe there was probably less disease eating this way, or the way we ate before agriculture. I'm just sort of anti grain. We should write a book called the anti grain diet and then we can have milk in our coffee. java script:emoticon('B)', 'smid_15')

  17. When I was eating bread I would eat sour doughs because I couldn't tolerate yeasts. I would order bread from French Meadow bakery in Mn. They have a web. site Frenchmeadow.com. I copied what they had to say about sour dough. It is healhier.

Without the use of baker's yeast, dough may take eight or ten times as long to rise, but you might agree with us that the wait is worth it. Why, then, do we leave the yeast out of our bread? It is healthier - not only for the large number of people who are allergic to yeast, but for all of us. One significant health advantage to yeast-free bread is its value to digestion. While yeasted breads create, over time, an imbalance in our intestinal flora, yeast-free breads help to preserve that balance. And, as it contains strains of lactobacillus - an organism important for the proper digestion of complex carbohydrates - yeast-free bread is easier for our stomachs to break down and utilize.

If there are health benefits to yeast-free bread, then why not simply leave out the leavening process altogether? The answer is that the natural leavening process itself is beneficial for our bodies. Wheat grain contains phytic acid, a substance that has been linked to anemia, rickets, and nervous disorders. When bread is leavened naturally, 100% of the phytic acid is eliminated. If, on the other hand, bread is leavened with the help of baker's yeast, only 10% of the acid is removed.
