  1. I'm not sure where you are but in California you can find Open Original Shared Link stuff in the stores. It's casein free too. They don't ship right now but they say that they take requests if you want to see it in a store near you. I tried the chocolate cake last week and it was really good! So far I've tried a lot of really gross gluten-free baked goods...
  2. Interesting article. I'm still new with all this but I have some books on the way right now. Has anyone read the book Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond? I'm about a third of the way through this. It actually relates to this article. His position is that the dominance of the Western World (techologically, politically, etc) in recent times can be traced...
  3. This is interesting. My gran's mother died of colon cancer. My gran actually died of liver failure even though a bad fall triggered the end. I'm wondering if she still had problems with wheat. She didn't drink a whole lot, so alcohol definitely wasn't the reason. The thing is, she was diabetic so she might have been focusing her diet around that. She had...
  4. OK, I was planning to see an allergist anyway. My brother got some of that stuff done. How related are wheat allergies and gluten intolerances though? In terms of running in the family are they totally different, or somewhat related?
  5. So what test would I get for a wheat allergy? I'm already scheduled to get a "celiac panel" blood test next week. This is what tests for the antibodies, right? I'd like to schedule other tests at the same time if I can figure out what they would be.
  6. I'm still really new to all this. I know there is a difference between celiac disease and a gluten intolerance. I guess I thought that a wheat allergy was the same as a gluten intolerance (but not celiac disease). Could somebody tell me where to find some of the newbie stuff? I'm still sort of piecing this all together. It seems like every time I think...
  7. Wow, so I was telling my mom just now that I tried the gluten-free diet for a few weeks and felt great! She knew I was having trouble with anemia and the diet was a total experiment. I just happened to come across a few things about celiac disease (which I'd never really heard of) when reading about my test results. Then she said my grandmother developed...
  8. Actually, I heard something (it was either in a book or a documentary) about how some people have younger looking features regardless of their ages. Basically, if you have smaller features in the center of your face you seem younger because young children and babies have smaller features in relation to their head size. Does that make sense? A lot of people...
  9. I agree with checking the individual colleges. I started at one college with a central dining hall. Pasta was the default food when everything else looked gross. This would not be a good environment. I transferred to a different school after a few years. (Mills College in California) Most dorms had individual meal halls, although there was one main cafeteria...
  10. I've been eating gluten again for 2 days and I do feel kinda gross. I jumped in because I had the same question and just like micha I have been anemic and really tired. I also had a really tiring weekend with lots of exercise (snowboarding) and drinking, so I can't pick out what is from gluten. I'm still too new to this to understand what it's all about...
  11. I was wondering about this too- I tried the gluten-free diet for two weeks, and my doctor said I need to eat wheat for one week before getting my antibody tests. (next week) Will one week be enough since I only ate gluten-free for a short time?
  12. This is the funniest thing I've read so far on this board. At this point I'm only guessing I have a gluten intolerance, but we had a running joke about that sort of thing in my family. My great grandmother died from colon cancer, so my grandmother (her daughter) was obsessed with "BMs" and intestinal health. She always asked about that any time someone didn...
  13. I am mostly Scottish and German. I also have some Irish, English, Welsh, French, and maybe some Swiss. I have blue eyes and blonde hair. I should point out that I haven't had any positive tests yet about having a gluten intolerance. (getting those in 2 weeks.) I've been anemic for a few years and a lot of other symptoms fit, so I'm just assuming at...
  14. I've only been eating gluten-free for less than two weeks, but my energy has skyrocketed. I don't know that much about the whole gluten issue yet, but I know a great deal about depression meds. I've always needed a low dose to get out of bed and do the natural things that improve my mood, like exercise. I've had a lot of trouble with being tired from anemia...
  15. Thanks! I know some of these answers are already somewhere on the forum, but this is all so overwhelming. I've already lost some weight in the past 10 days, but it's partly because it's such an ordeal to read every single label or because I'm so freakin' sick of corn.
  16. So my doctor ordered a "Celiac Panel" of bloodtests. She said to eat wheat again for a week and I don't have to fast before the test. What bloodtests would be in a "Celiac Panel"? Normally my tests are linked to descriptions, but I can't find any information about this.
  17. Hi, I'm totally new. This is my first post, so forgive me if a lot of this is redundant. OK, so I've been anemic off and on for the last 3 years or so. I've had some random problems in the past. In the last 2-3 months I've been really tired, so I started taking my iron supplements again. In the last month I've been REALLY tired. Nothing after a few months...
