  1. Do you have a Whole Foods where you live? They have good prebaked crusts. I'm not sure what's in them but they have a specifically gluten-free section in the bakery area.
  2. Madhur Jaffrey has a lot of cook books. I've made a few of her recipes before. I don't think wheat flour is common in Indian sauces. You mostly find wheat in the flatbreads and snacks and stuff. Dairy is another story, but there are a number of dishes without yogurt.
  3. Turkey meatballs ¾ lb ground turkey 3 uncooked turkey sausages* 3-4 Tbsp pesto sauce** ½ log of polenta, crumbled 1 egg pepper Squeeze sausage out of casing. Combine with ground turkey. Add in egg and pesto sauce. Add crumbled polenta and pepper. Shape into 1Tbsp meatballs. Brown in a frying pan. Cover with red sauce of your choice and simmer 1...
  4. Yep, I'm in San Francisco.
  5. I love doritos, but I know the regular nacho flavor has wheat in it. (But not the spicy nacho flavor- what the heck?) What about the Habanero Doritos? They aren't in my Clan Thompson list, but I think they are too new to be in there anyway. They definitely don't have wheat in them, but of course they have the dreaded "natural flavors".
  6. I eat polenta in place of pasta. I make turkey meatballs (with polenta instead of bread crumbs) and then eat it all with red sauce. It's awesome! I still fry the slices of polenta though. And actually, I realized that I could make meatloaf the same way because it would be very similar to the meatballs.
  7. I have to travel every 2-3 months for work. I generally pack everything I need for breakfasts and snacks. The most important thing for me is to stay in a room with a mini-fridge. Those are common in hotels that see a lot of business travel. I've been able to go to Outback before. That really helped. They have a gluten-free menu. Funny thing- one of my...
  8. Frustrating is right. I just went up 4 flights of stairs at my friend's place. I took a nap this afternoon instead of going to the gym, so I figured I should take the stairs. My thighs are still burning 2 hours later. I'm exhausted. My thighs are like jello!
  9. My Clan Thompson list only has a few specific kinds of Orville Redenbacher. I just had some Smart Pop (the butter kind, not the kettle corn) but the butter kind isn't on the CT list. It says no wheat but it also has the dreaded "natural flavors". I'm wondering...
  10. There is OTC thyroid?!? In the US? What is normal and what is low? I've had thyroid tests done and they were in the normal range, but a lot of my tests come back at the vey low end of normal. As I read this thread I'm sitting here under a blanket wearing fingerless gloves, a sweatshirt with the hood up, and socks. It's still August!
  11. Well my gran had some kind of grain intolerance (Not 100% sure on specifics because it was the 1940s) and her sister had MS. I don't think this is a coincidence.
  12. I've gotten rid of most of those other products. I've checked most of them. I don't know how sensitive I am though. I've only been able to figure out that I've been glutened about 2 times. I don't have immediate reactions like a lot of people. I end up sleeping all day long for a day or two and I get really bloated for 3-4 days. I kept finding little things...
  13. I've been gluten-free for a little over 6 months now. I've put on a lot of weight both because I'm absorbing and because my eating habits are crazy. I was eating too many nuts, but I've stopped that. I know I need to work on the food now that I've figured out the gluten-free part (I think), but that's only half the equation. So the real problem for me...
  14. I go out to eat a lot. I love sushi. There are tons of things I can eat at sushi restaurants, but SOY SAUCE can ruin it all. SO... I got a case of the Kari-Out gluten-free soy sauce packets. I keep them in one of those plastic soap cases (for traveling) so they don't break in my purse. I eat sushi about once a week, so it's worth it. It also helps if I...
  15. It's funny, beer was the first thing to make me sick. It has made me sick since high school- way before other gluten stuff did. I generally drink cider when I'm at a pub. I like wine- if you have a Trader Joe's you can find lots of good cheap wines. The sulfites in red wines bother me, but it isn't gluten. I also drink a lot of rum and tequila drinks...
  16. I have San-J at home. I bought a case of Kari-Out gluten-free low sodium soy sauce packets for restaurants. I thought a case was a lot, but I eat so much sushi!
  17. Oo, this looks interesting! I might have to sign up. It all depends on the airline. SFO is best for United. San Jose and Oakland are often cheaper for many airlines, particularly Southwest and Alaska. If I lived closer to SJ, I'd definitely pick that one to avoid driving over bridges.
  18. Well I don't have a whole lot of dairy. I use lactaid on cereal. Besides that, I only have dairy in cheese form. I've had the CBC (blood count) and ferritin.... maybe some other ones for the iron tests. I've had TSH and Free T4 for the thyroid.
  19. OK, so I've been gluten-free for about 6 months, and I'm still TIRED. All the time. Nothing I try helps. I told my doctor last week during my physical, and she did all the tests again including iron and thyroid tests. Everything is in the normal range, but still at the very low end of the normal range. What should my next step be? I've been complaining about...
  20. This thread reminds me- my gran had "wheat problems" at my age, but they told her she grew out of it. Her mother died of colon cancer and I think many of my gran's problems were related to her "wheat problems". Anyway, my gran was constantly asking us if we'd had a BM that day. I can remember her asking that since I was a kid. My mother and uncle remember...
  21. I've been on antidepressants for most of my adult life. I've been taking ritalin for ADD (not ADHD) for about 3 years. It's funny- I do still need the meds, but I think I'm less depressed now that I'm not eating wheat. It's hard to say though. There are so many pieces that affect one's general well-being. I feel better in a lot of little ways. I think...
  22. OK, just wondering. My gran had to take thyroid supplements although I don't know at what age she started. She had problems with wheat too, so that's why I was curious. I have more of her problems (and looks!) than from any other family member. Yeah, I'm still always tired. My ferritin test came back yesterday though. It's still very low, but it's in the...
  23. I've had problems with C my whole life. It is definitely better now. I have to take colace because I'm taking iron pills, but I noticed improvement anyway. I was definitely having problems with C last week when I got glutened.
  24. Does the "normal" range vary depending on your hospital? I'm just curious. I got all my test results back yesterday. I'm still really tired even though my iron levels are improving. My TSH is 1.32, and the normal range says 0.49 - 4.67. I looked back at my tests from the past three years, and it looks like my tests are all 1.2 - 1.8. My free T4 is...
  25. I such a major craving for pizza last week. Ugh! Getting glutened last week made me rethink eating a bite of it though. I don't want to do that again! I must find a good dough recipe.
