  1. I'm going to the allergist in a few days. I'm pretty sure I have another food allergy/intolerance/both, but I'm not sure which one. I've already stopped my allergy meds in preparation for the skin tests. I know those are based on the exposure at the time of the test, not a build up over time. So what should I do to prepare for the blood tests? I suspect...
  2. I need makeup remover to take off my waterproof mascara. What will work for this? I have MAC's makeup remover wipes, but they've started to burn. (There's nothing on the label that's a red flag.)

I don't know what it is about Clinique products, but they have always given me problems. I got the skin care kit in college, and it totally made me break out. The breakouts were not acne. I don't know what it was- kind of sore/scab like, but I'm not sure if I would call it blisters. Clinique is the one brand that I reacted so strongly to that I've avoided...
  4. My acne cleared up a lot for the first year I was gluten free. It came back with a vengeance, and it's been bothering me for the last year. It's really itchy too. I think I may have another food allergy that is causing it, because my allergies in general have been insane over the last 6 months. (Going to the allergist this week.)
  5. I'd like new doctors to realize that celiac isn't the only diagnosis out there. I feel like non-celiac gluten-intolerant people get dismissed too easily. I think my doctor would take me more seriously if I had tested positive for celiac. I did an elimination diet to figure out I couldn't have wheat. A few family members have related disorders, including...
  6. I live in San Francisco, but my doctors are at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation. I'm not really happy with most of them. I'm really not happy with my general practitioner and I want to switch, but I don't know who to switch to. I have an appointment next week with the allergist. I'm not even sure what kind of doctor I need anymore. Are they the same...
  7. I know I can't have grain alcohol. I try to avoid it. I almost always drink 100% agave tequila or white wine. It seems like every time I drink - whether it's these "safe" things or something else that's grain-free - I'm still really stuffy. Is it canceling out my allergy medicine? It seems to happen a lot. Last night my friend suggested that I might be allergic...
  8. My acne has been insane lately. It initially cleared up a lot when I went on the gluten-free diet. I think maybe something else (a drug or product) has gluten in it. I don't know where it's coming from... but I know that when I accidentally eat gluten I get horrible break-outs.
  9. Hmm, maybe I should try pilates. I also need to work on my lower back muscles. I sit at a computer all day.
  10. I would strongly recommend committing to the diet. Here's what happened to my grandmother: She was diagnosed with some kind of wheat problem in her 20s, just like me. This was the 1940s, so the tests weren't advanced enough to distinguish between celiac, non-celiac gluten intolerance, etc. She went on a strict diet for a few years. They told her she grew...
  11. Many of you can probably relate to this... I feel like years of bloating and a distended tummy have made my abs really weak. Even if I eat smaller meals I can tell, because my tummy sticks out a bit. This isn't the case for my friends. They only have that problem after a giant meal. I think that maybe my abs are in the same condition as a woman who has...
  12. I have no idea what other foods are off limits for you, but here's what I take: I warm up corn tortillas in the toaster so they are flexible. I add a slice of cheese so it melts a bit. Then I put a few slices of lunch meat (turkey) in it, and make a wrap. I put a few into a ziploc bag while they are still warm. I've taken these on air trips, ski trips...
  13. Cruises are actually pretty good. I've been on a few recently. I went on Royal Caribbean a few months ago. They were great in the main dining room. The waiter is the same for the whole cruise. They work for tips, and I think they know how well people with food allergies tip when things go well. (At least I tip well for it!) The thing you have to watch out...
  14. Since I've been gluten free, I've been to the following: UK (just London) - I went to a random pub, and everything on the menu had gluten-free symbols where applicable. Sweden - I only ordered one thing - burger without a bun. I'd bet this is a great country for gluten-free people though. Denmark - I only ordered one thing- salad with meat and vegies...
  15. I'm going to Northern Europe this summer. I don't speak any of the languages in the countries I'm visiting, so I'm going to need help. Aren't there some cards with different translations of "I can't eat wheat"? I really need to find something like that. I should add that many of the countries I'm visiting are in the "celiac zone" like Sweden. I have no...
  16. My friend can do this. She can now eat cow's cheese if it is cooked a long time. She says it's because the protein becomes denatured during cooking. She's only been able to do this (in moderation) for a couple years. Before that she could only have goat and sheep dairy without breaking into hives all over.
  17. To add to this question, do you have a significant other who may have changed products? I break out really bad sometimes because of my SO. He had to check all his products for wheat. I make him brush his teeth every time he eats wheat if we're spending time together.
  18. Wow, so how much relation is there between gall bladder problems and gluten-intolerance? I just logged on here to post a thread about this. My mother just called to tell me that she's getting her gall bladder out on Thursday. She's 58, and experimenting with the gluten-free diet. My grandmother also had her gall bladder out in her 50s, and she was definitely...
  19. I also drink cider at bars that mostly have beer. Wyder's is pretty reliable. Their website references celiac.com when talking about gluten.
  20. This may or may not be a wheat issue. Something in my MAC eye makeup (probably the eyeliner) is making me get a rash on my eyelids. I've had to stop using it and put cortizone cream on them. This has only been happening for the last two months. The crazy part is that my mother asked if I'd had problems with this a few days ago, totally out of the blue...
  21. I've been wondering how many chefs have food issues. My friend emailed a restaurant to ask about gluten-free stuff for me, and the chef responded that her sister can't eat wheat. I went to a place with another friend who called ahead, and the chef responded that she herself couldn't eat wheat. I've been to a few places where the waitresses were gluten-intolerant...
  22. Wyder's has a press release right on their website, which references celiac.com. They also include their definition of gluten-free, i.e. parts per million.
  23. That's good, but I'm looking for something a little more in depth. My problem is ferritin, and it's hard to find stuff that talks about how that fits into the whole picture. I only know on a general level.
  24. I was talking yesterday with a few friends, who were telling me about blood doping problems in cycling. (basically they get more red blood cells to get more oxygen) I was trying to figure out how this worked into my anemia.... when I realized I couldn't fully explain it past a really general level. Are there any good books or even websites that explain...
  25. I have to cook so much more now that I'm on the gluten-free diet. I can't order takeout anymore. I am totally content to eat turkey for 4 days if it means I don't have to think about reading labels or cooking for 4 days!
