  1. My brother lives in La Jolla. He's a picky eater and a health food fanatic. He shops at that Whole Foods AND he says that some of the other normal grocery stores are just as expensive (so why not just shop at WF?). One restaurant you will find EVERYWHERE around San Diego is Rubio's. I love this place! They are a small chain of Mexican restaurants. Their...
  2. I really suggest reading Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond. His thesis is that there are a number of environmental factors , both naturally occurring and influenced by humans, which contributed to the dominance of western culture over other cultures. One of those is food production (which allowed settlements to develop into cities, etc.) He goes into...
  3. Further down on that Wikipedia article it says: "Asian cuisine originally used a seaweed broth to obtain the flavor-enhancing effects of MSG, but today MSG is made by a fermenting process using starch, sugar beets, sugar cane, or molasses." Dangerous Grains lists it in the "maybe" category... I wonder if they'll have to say where the MSG comes from now...
  4. So I'm not actually pregnant but I guess this is the best section for girly questions. I've been on a low dose of Loestrin for close to a year because I had some irregular bleeding. (they couldn't figure it out after an ultrasound- one more mystery problem) For the last few months I've noticed that it hasn't been working as well in the sense that my...
  5. I just finished Dangerous Grains yesterday. I was wondering who would get the rectal challenge instead of the enterolab. The book came out in 2002, so maybe enterolab has gotten more popular since then. (?) I'm still waiting for my blood test results. I'm also waiting for a reply from my doctor about doing other tests, but I think she's waiting for the...
  6. Up until a few weeks ago I had bad acne. It was only bad in the last few years but Proactiv kept it under control until recently. In the last 2 months it had gotten really bad and I started getting it on my body. It cleared up really well with some antibiotics from the dermatologist, but I've also been eating gluten-free in the last month. fyi- I just...
  7. I also take the Acidophilus pills from Trader Joe's. There ARE a few supplements that have gluten in them, but only like 2 or 3. I actually had no idea that gluten intolerant people should be taking these in general for digestion. I was just taking them anyway since I'm taking antibiotics right now. (and I can't eat yogurt)
  8. Oh good, I'm so glad to hear that this isn't totally weird. I think I'm getting sick anyway right now. (like common cold kind of sick) I have been around sick people a lot and I've been lucky until today! I think it was going into the hospital to get blood tests on Wednesday. So many sick people.
  9. Are any vodkas made from other grains like wheat? Vodka has always made me sick but I'm not sure why.
  10. I saw that list the other day. I have the same problem. How do I know where my generics are manufactured? I'm not sure who to contact for that. I went into Walgreen's today and the pharm tech didn't know how to check many of them. She did give me a complete list of all the gluten-free Walgreen's products though.
  11. Awesome! I'm gonna have to get some of that soy sauce.
  12. Can those dark circles come from anything else besides food intolerances and allergies? I suggested the gluten-free thing to my friend last week because he's been out sick a lot in the last six months. He's always had major dark circles (worse than anyone I've ever seen) as long as I've known him. It turns out that his mother had to start a gluten-free diet...
  13. Unfortunately some of the dumbest people I've ever met were in my classes in grad school. My program was small and they'd take nearly anybody. Sad. I met some brilliant people too, but some really crazy/strange/stupid/etc. people.
  14. Wow, this thread is fascinating so far... I've only suspected that I have a wheat problem for a little over a month, but after doing a lot of research it's obviously a good fit. I've been on antidepressants for about 8 years. I'm not sure if it's related or not, but I started them because of hormonal problems. I was pretty fat until around this time...
  15. Oh cool, that's the one gluten-free cookbook I have so far! I'll have to look into that.
  16. I guess what I'm wondering is how reputable they are if the doctor doesn't do it. Will my doctor take these results seriously? I want it to be included in my records so that my doctor will consider it in later recommendations and referrals.
  17. I've always had the opposite problem, years before I started taking iron supplements. In fact, I take a natural laxative with my iron every night. It's rare that I have D. This new diet has been making things work a little bit better though.
  18. Funny- years before I ever had problems with any food I always got sick from beer. For some reason vodka makes me really sick too. I love margaritas. I pay for the better liquors when I get drinks since I'm small and only need 1 or 2 to get drunk. I get mine with Herradura or Sauza. Cuervo is just gross to me. You probably have to watch out for some...
  19. I have no problem bringing a little bottle of my own soy sauce when I get sushi, but what if I don't know where I'm going? I'd like to get some little packets of wheat free soy sauce and other condiments that I can keep with me if I don't know my plans. Does anyone make little stuff like this? What do you all do in this case? Do you all keep travel-sized...
  20. I was thinking about this. Can I get this done through my doctor? Or is it only available to do on your own?
  21. Well, I'm thinking that my grandmother was undiagnosed celiac. She had "wheat problems" in her 20s that she supposedly grew out of. She also took thyroid supplements, had scleroderma, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, some kind of platelet disease, and other stuff I can't remember. She basically died from liver failure (she rarely drank) but that was after a bad...
  22. You know, I was eating a lot of sourdough last week when I had to eat gluten. (Thank goodness that is over.) Now that I think about it, my sandwiches (with sourdough) didn't make me feel tired or sick like the bagels and pizza did. The other big difference was that I was eating lots of meat at the same time as the sourdough. I only fell asleep in the middle...
  23. Oh yeah, Envirokids? They make "rice krispie treats" already in bar form. They are pretty good. I'm been on a mad quest to get gluten-free rice krispie treats ever since going gluten free.
  24. I was about to ask this question too. I did two weeks gluten-free and felt fantastic. I was getting up early. Then I ate wheat for a week to get some blood tests. I was constantly sleeping, but that was with wheat. Now I've been gluten-free again for maybe 5 days and I'm still sleeping all the time. How do I know what is from accidental gluten and what is...
  25. Yeah, I just had beef for lunch. I haven't really eaten very much red meat in the last several years, but I haven't actually eaten beef in at least 3-4 years. I don't like it. For some reason I saw beef taquitos at the store and I HAD TO HAVE THEM. They were so good. I take iron supplements and I've been anemic for a few years, and I've still never ever had...
