  1. Oo, I'm gonna have to try this. My friend is making St. Pat's dinner and I need to bring something since she's serving pot pie among other things.
  2. I assume DH causes marks on the skin that take a while to fade, especially with so many people on this board having such pale skin. I've had really bad acne in the last few years (any relation to gluten?), and I still have marks on my face from it. (discoloration, not pits) Does anyone use anything to fade these marks? I know there are products out there...
  3. I can't offer suggestions with the gluten, but I do want to point out that there are many ways to get sick at a preschool that don't involve gluten. I used to work in a hospital on the same floor as pediatrics. I've never been so paranoid about handwashing and germs. Kids touch tables, elevator buttons, door handles, toys, etc and then rub their eyes, runny...
  4. My gran got Type 2 diabetes when she was pregnant with my uncle. (her last kid) I think she was about 34. I'm convinced she was an undiagnosed celiac. She even knew she had wheat problems in her 20s before having kids, but supposedly grew out of it. (but not really)
  5. I've been eating McCann's as well. I looked at their website and it didn't make me nervous since they pretty much stick to oatmeal. Quaker makes EVERYTHING, so I don't even want to try their stuff. I usually eat the instant stuff, and I stopped eating some of the flavors just because I have no idea what those are. So far I've only noticed that I feel funny...
  6. What is candida? You don't mean the yeast, do you? In the GI tract? I keep reading about probiotics, but I'm wondering how good they are. I started taking the Trader Joe's acidophilus pills because I'm on antibiotics, but I'm not sure how useful they are.
  7. This is a really interesting thread. I've been taking ONLY ibuprofen since I thought it was the safe option. My gran ultimately died from cirrhosis, and she barely drank, so I have been really paranoid about my liver since then. I threw out all my Tylenol and I won't touch it with a ten foot pole now.
  8. I like the balsamic vinaigrette from Open Original Shared Link I bought it at Safeway.
  9. The ones I have are just the generic "newborn wipes" from Walgreen's. The tub says hypoallergenic and alcohol free, and the ingredient list looks totally safe.
  10. Sometime this week I'm going to have a family meeting with my 2 roommates. We all share a kitchen and many utensils. I just bought a breadmaker and it's going to be totally off limits. The toaster is shared but it's the oven kind with a crumb tray. (I'm not so sensitive that I'm worried about it.) What other things should I look out for? I'm going to mention...
  11. I've always had problems with dark circles too. I was even looking into that Hylexin stuff last month because I'm so sick of them. (That stuff is way too expensive though) Wow, it seems like almost everything that's bothering me could potentially be from wheat. I'm sure that a lot of us notice the circles more just on account of being so pale (based on the...
  12. Actually, I was kind of allergic to my ex. It was the oil in his skin. My face got all these little tiny red bumps every time we saw each other in the beginning, when we had a long distance relationship. When we saw each other regularly (not long distance) I got used to him and didn't have those skin problems. Weird.
  13. Well, I talked to my mom again last night. She had said that my gran had "wheat problems" at my age that she grew out of but didn't know much more. So I started grilling her for more details about my gran... she had stuff I'd never even heard of before, like scleroderma. (some autoimmune thing with the tissue) She also died of liver failure (not from alcohol...
  14. I gotta say, it might be a good thing for a kid to get a bite of something with gluten and KNOW that's what made them sick. I know a couple kids with food allergies. My cousin is now 20. She knew by about age 4 that walnuts made her throw up or swell. A family friend's kid is severely allergic/intolerant to EVERYTHING it seems. Wheat, soy, nuts... at age...
  15. Open Original Shared Link I'm so glad my balsamic vinaigrette is gluten-free. It's my favorite and I already had it in the fridge.
  16. Yeah, I know that makes sense, but I'm so new to all this (only got my recent anemia tests back 1 month ago and started a gluten-free diet 3 weeks ago) that I don't quite have the experience to pinpoint some of these problems. I didn't actually notice that I felt crappy until eating gluten AFTER my 2 weeks gluten-free, so I feel like I need some tests to...
  17. I've been talking about the wheat issue a lot lately with my friend. She is a fabulous cook (parents had a Chinese restaurant) and a microbiologist so it's very useful. She's also Cantonese. We talked about the soy sauce yesterday. There are a few kinds of soy sauce that people use in Asia, and a lot of the stuff in America isn't quite authentic. She buys...
  18. I've had a heck of a week. At this point I'm thinking screw the bloodtest. After my bloodtest a few months ago showed that I was still anemic after taking iron I decided to try the gluten-free diet as an experiment. (I've been anemic off and on for 3 years, but iron has helped in the past.) After only 4 days I felt phenomenal. My doctor (an internist) ordered...
  19. So Kraft is generally good with labeling? I think I looked at the Jet-Puffed in the store, but that dang "natural flavoring" kept me from buying them.
  20. I'm so bummed to find out that regular Rice Krispies have that flavoring in them. So what is a good gluten-free alternative? I really like that Erewhon Rice Twice stuff, but that has both the crispies and the puffed rice. I don't want the puffed rice, but it seems like that is easier to find. Where can I find just the crispy rice? What about marshmallows...
  21. Lots of rolls have something fried in them like tempura. I think panko bread crumbs are wheat. Spider rolls have deep-fried softshell crab. Unagi (eel) sauce is definitely soy sauce based. A lot of stuff is pickled (ginger, oshinko, etc.) but I don't know what kind of vinegar they use. Every restaurant has a different spicy tuna recipe, so I'd ask about that...
  22. I've noticed since I've started avoiding wheat that I've changed some other habits. I am now flossing every day because I'm eating so much corn. My dental health has really improved. I'm curious- what other unexpected effects have you all experienced after avoiding wheat? I know there are lots of common improvements like energy and stuff. I'm curious...
  23. I think it must have been "hydrolized". My friend was intolerant of hydrolized soy protein I believe... whatever is in fake meat products.
  24. You aren't using any other products are you? Like lubricant? Hands can be contaminated as well, so you really have to make sure they are clean. Genitals are full of mucous membrane tissue. (I taught sex ed last semester)
  25. Wait, you can deduct this stuff on your taxes? How? Do you need an official diagnosis to do that?
