I have to say, I didn't realize there was such a difference until I got glutened last week. I wasn't sure how sensitive I was. I forgot my gluten-free soy sauce, so I ate sushi with regular. I looked like I was pregnant for a few days! I had no idea how much this was from gluten. Now my stomach is flatter again. My mom has a little gut and my grandmother...

ARCHIVED How Often Do You Meet Other Gluten-intolerant People In Restaurants?
munchkinette posted a topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
This was so weird. I was visiting my friend in Albuquerque over the weekend, and we drove up to Santa Fe. We had lunch at a cute little restaurant. We were discussing the whole wheat issue while we were eating (I had a breakfast plate and corn tortillas were one of the toast choices! Yay!). Five minutes later we hear the next table discussing dessert with... -
ARCHIVED Oops- Japanese Food = Wheat
munchkinette replied to BRUMI1968's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Also beware of miso soup, unless you made it yourself. Miso soup is made with koji, which is aspergillus mold and a starter. That starter is usually rice or barley. You never know which one it is unless you buy it yourself. I've made it myself at home before. NOTE: For those of you that live in a city on the west coast with a lot of Japanese people... -

ARCHIVED Allergy Vs. Celiac
munchkinette replied to nursestherapies's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Honestly, I haven't had positive intolerance tests, but I have had a positive allergy skin test. I consider this a minor thing, but it's generally what I tell people I have because they can understand it without a ton of explanation. I'm sure most of my problem is intolerance. I'm not about to eat wheat again with a confirmed allergy in order to test positive... -
ARCHIVED Is Kissing Gluten Free?
munchkinette replied to Katie O'Rourke's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I doubt this is wheat related, but I am allergic to boys! I was in a long distance relationship with my ex for the first 8 months we were together. (5 years total.) I only saw him once a month during that time, and my face would freak out from all the oil in his skin. I got all these little red bumps, and a few were like little pimples. It happened every... -
I'm going to visit my friend next month in Albuquerque. I've done some internet searches and I found Whole Foods, Trader Joes, and Wild Oats, but they are ALL on the Northeast side of town. My friend lives on the Southwest side of town. That's a heck of a drive! What are some other places to shop that might be in that part of the US? What about restaurants...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Hoisin Sauce, Anyone?!?
munchkinette replied to awesomeame's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I KNOW I saw one at Whole Foods this week, but I can't remember the brand. I don't think it was their house brand either. -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Use Antihistamin Drugs?
munchkinette replied to elisabet's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I take all sorts of allergy meds, but I take a lot less now that I'm gluten-free. I was using my inhaler a lot, and I rarely have to anymore. I still have pet, dust, and mold allergies. Watch out for generics. I found out that my Walgreen's version of Claritin isn't gluten-free, so I have to buy the name brand. It's reasonable at Costco. -
ARCHIVED Dermalogica?
munchkinette posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Does anyone have a list of OK Dermalogica products? I wrote them an email, but I just got the stupid canned email answer back from them. I stopped using the Active Moist face lotion because I just wasn't sure what was in it. I still use the Intensive Eye Repair, but it doesn't come anywhere near my mouth and I *think* it only has oats.... but I'm not... -
ARCHIVED How To Rotate Food Groups?
munchkinette replied to Felidae's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Do you really have to rotate that often? I generally buy stuff at the grocery store and eat it often during that week until it runs out. Then don't buy whatever that is for another week or two. -
Right now I'm paying too much for Cobra (Blue Cross of Cal.). It runs out in a few months, but I'm taking a freelance job anyway so I'll need my own insurance. Who here pays their own insurance that is separate from their jobs? I know timing is important. I've had a negative blood test but I see the allergist on Tuesday. At some point I'd like to get...

ARCHIVED Hot Sauces?
munchkinette posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm looking for a good jalapeno sauce to put on meats/potatoes/tacos. I've been using one that I *think* is gluten-free, but I haven't heard back from them and that sauce is on my short list for a mild glutening this weekend. The only questionable ingredient is "spices". My mom was cooking for me this weekend and is still learning, so there could have been... -
ARCHIVED Clan Thompson
munchkinette replied to Moongirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Question- if you find foods that aren't on the CT list can you enter them into the program or somehow put them on your palm pilot? I'm going to get this soon, but I don't actually have a palm pilot yet. (Friend is selling her old one for cheap) If not, can you send in products for the next update? -
ARCHIVED I'm Looking For An gluten-free Iron Supplement
munchkinette replied to DavidB's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The Walgreen's generic ferrous sulfate says NO GLUTEN right on the bottle. Trader Joe's iron should be gluten-free too. -
ARCHIVED What Unusual Concoctions Do You Enjoy?
munchkinette replied to jaten's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I got this from my brother- drain a can of Genova tuna (tuna in olive oil) and mix it with balsamic vinegar, salt, and pepper. Mix it up with a drained can of kidney beans. It's really good, and really nutritious! You don't need any mayo (we all hate it) since you have the olive oil and vinegar. He also makes a concoction of dried oatmeal (I know most... -

ARCHIVED Dr. Green's New Book
munchkinette replied to CMCM's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I haven't gotten to that part yet. I gotta say, based on what I've heard from other male doctors, I'm sure he knows what he's talking about with the gluten. He probably has no idea what it's like to wear makeup or use a lot of styling products. It's probably more an issue of being male. My brother was amazed when he discovered moisturizer and how great it... -
I've always had a problem with C, but now a lot of it is because of my iron supplements. My doctor told me to take colace for it. (docusate sodium) She said it's safe every day. The stimulant laxitives are BAD and some fiber pills are wheat germ or other stuff. I get C without the iron, so I basically won't take it unless I can take the colace too.

ARCHIVED Pet Food
munchkinette replied to happy4dolphins's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My stepmom's dog has lots of food allergies. he's really lethargic and huge for his breed- they thought maybe he had a thyroid problem. He's allergic to lots of grains. Sound familiar? Now the dogs eat BARF= Bones And Raw Food. Basically it's raw meat (cheaper stuff like chicken necks), ground up bones (raw, since cooked bones are dangerous for dogs... -
I was wondering about that too. My stylist uses a lot of Sebastian stuff, and I know the shampoo has wheat. I thought the problem with those products was that a small amount of suds gets on your face in the shower, and possibly ingested. It seems like that wouldn't be an issue when the stylist is washing your hair in the sink.

ARCHIVED Successful Gluten Free Banana Bread!
munchkinette posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Third time's the charm! My friend and I have been working to modify her regular banana bread recipe, and this one came out good! I think it's casein free as well. Beat together until smooth: 1/2 cup unsweetened apple sauce 2 eggs 1 Tbsp lime or lemon juice 1 cup brown sugar (pack it down to measure!) 1 Tbsp vanilla Mix in: 1 cup mashed bananas... -
OK, I checked. The rosemary mint conditioner DOES have wheat amino acids but the rosemary mint shampoo is ok. I'm not sure how old those bottles are, so the formula may be different.

ARCHIVED Aauugh! I Accidentally Licked A Bunch Of Envelopes!
munchkinette replied to eleep's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I bought self-seal envelopes but I still need to seal some envelopes. I need one of those little spongey things. I'm so glad I saw this headline yesterday before I went to the bank and used the atm envelopes. I never would have thought of it otherwise. (I licked my thumb and wet the envelope, then washed my hands as soon as I could.) I thought... -
ARCHIVED Familt Act Like Celiac Is No Big Deal?
munchkinette replied to erin24's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My mom takes it very seriously for ME. I've been trying to get her to go gluten-free though, and she hasn't taken that very seriously. I'm going to help her this weekend when I go home. She just feels too stressed to check all the labels for "natural flavors". She's been eating a lot less wheat and she'll cook/buy whatever I ask when I visit, but I don't...
