ARCHIVED gluten-free Frosting In A Can
munchkinette replied to Amyleigh0007's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Frosting is pretty easy to make yourself if you have one of those electric beater things. Last time I tried to buy frosting in a can I was a little freaked out. Way too many of them had wheat, so I didn't buy any of them at all. There's so much crap in them. -
ARCHIVED What Are Some Of Your Favorite Snacks?
munchkinette replied to Blessings's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Trader joe's frozen gluten-free pancakes, with chunky peanut butter. I could eat that all day. -
ARCHIVED Can Anyone Recommend A Good Facial Cleanser?
munchkinette replied to missy'smom's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I also use the olive oil soap from KMF. I started after my hair stylist suggested that I try avoiding parabens. So far I like it most of the time. I use the cleanser from acne.com, which is a local company for me. It may have a fragrance, but if it does it's mild enough that I can't actually remember. -
ARCHIVED Looking For Motivational Improvement Stories
munchkinette replied to Live2BWell's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Since this thread is in the Behavior section, I'll start with that. I was taking 2 Ritalin ER per day for about three years, including the two years in grad school. I couldn't function without them. I was also taking antidepressants off and on for about eight years. (Mainly SSRIs) Mostly that was for depression, but some anxiety as well. I've been off those... -
ARCHIVED Stride Gum Reaction
munchkinette replied to Shawn's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I chew Stride peppermint flavor like crazy, and I've never reacted. I've tried one of the other mint flavors without a reaction. I've only tried the fruit flavor once, but that was when I was having issues already, so I can't say for sure. -
ARCHIVED Malabsorption - Thoughts? Experiences?
munchkinette replied to munchkinette's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thanks for pasting that article, babysteps. It got me thinking about sun. I'm paranoid about because I'm so fair, and I get sunburnt so easily. (Yesterday, for example.) A lot of us are probably good about staying out of the sun, because gluten intolerance is so much more common in the countries with pale people. We are probably the ones who need it the most... -
ARCHIVED Glutenfree Pets: Rats, Anyone With Experience?
munchkinette replied to Blondie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have rats. I may have to get rid of them because of my allergies to them, not the gluten. I would recommend checking out the Open Original Shared Link There is a wealth of knowledge on there. People KNOW what is in their rat food. I actually use low protein dried dog food. It has wheat in it, but I make sure to wash my hands each time I feed them. -
ARCHIVED Airport Security
munchkinette replied to munchkinette's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
No, they didn't take the can of tuna, but he had to show it to his supervisor first. Funny, I didn't get stopped at all with three cans at San Francisco. I did pack my American Triumph card just in case though. And wow, I don't know how you Midwesterners do it. I had so much more trouble finding food I could eat in restaurants than I do in California... -
I was wondering when I'd get stopped. It happened today in Indianapolis. Airport security went through my bags. The guy had to check the water content on a can of tuna in my suitcase. Apparently that counts as a liquid. (Ridiculous!) The squeeze packs of peanut butter were passable. He was nice, but I had to be really apologetic. I mean, it's kind of weird...

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Have Slow Recovery Time?
munchkinette replied to munchkinette's topic in Sports and Fitness
This has been going on a while. I'm pushing myself more lately, but it's only been 2 weeks this time. Generally what happens is that I'm able to push for 3 weeks then it seems like I'm overtraining. I feel like that threshold is really low for me. Whether I keep pushing or ease off during the following week, I still have trouble making it past that point... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Have Slow Recovery Time?
munchkinette posted a topic in Sports and Fitness
It seems like it always takes me such a long time to recover from workouts. I can do 6 mile runs on the weekends, but then I can hardly workout more than 20 minutes for the rest of the week, until maybe the next weekend. I also have trouble increasing my resistance training. I feel like I'm sore for a lot longer than most people. I feel like I'm always tired... -
This place is pretty good. When I worked at my last office, my celiac coworker and I used to go here all the time. We almost always got the barbacoa without any problems. (He was super sensitive.) The one thing you have to watch out for is when it's super busy, the workers can go on autopilot. I've almost gotten shreds of cheese from the next person's bowl...

ARCHIVED Please Pass Me Your Tried & True gluten-free Banana Bread Recipe
munchkinette replied to TammyK's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Gluten Free Banana Bread Beat together until smooth: 1/2 cup unsweetened apple sauce 2 eggs 1 Tbsp lime or lemon juice 1 cup brown sugar (pack it down to measure!) 1 Tbsp vanilla Mix in: 1 cup mashed bananas Combine in separate bowl: 1 cup gluten-free flour mix 3/4 cup almond meal 2 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp baking powder 1.5 tsp xanthan... -
ARCHIVED Those Of You Who Use Digestive Enzymes....
munchkinette replied to jerseyangel's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wow, they impede absorption? That's crazy. I mean, I know silicon dioxide is basically sand, but I didn't think it was toxic. I don't know that I've ever seen supplements without at least one of those ingredients. In general I try to get as many vitamins as I can from food, but that's hard for all of us I think. -
Interestingly enough, my psychiatrist is really the only specialist I have who fully recognizes that I am gluten intolerant (as opposed to just allergic), mainly because he's been with me long enough to see the before and after. I was on anti-depressants off and on for most of my adult life, since maybe age 19. My ADD started getting really bad a few years...

ARCHIVED Difference Between Acne And Dh?
munchkinette replied to Woolygimp's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Never? I always get this bad acne on my face after being glutened, and it's really, really itchy. They are the deep cystic ones that hurt a lot, and they are almost always on my chin. They are generally filled with clear liquid and itchy like crazy... but they don't look like the pictures I've seen of DH. They are too deep, and all the pics I've seen of DH... -
ARCHIVED Those Of You Who Use Digestive Enzymes....
munchkinette replied to jerseyangel's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just started using Bio Align's "Daily Essential Enzymes." I just found them at Whole Foods and they were priced better than many other choices. It doesn't have anything extra in it besides gelatin, magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide, and it's vegetarian. -
ARCHIVED Neg Bloodwork, Neg Biopsy, But Diet Works
munchkinette replied to Katsby's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yeah, I"m in the same boat. 3 months after going gluten free I could have done the real challenge, maybe. NOW- No way. I had to come home early from a trip last month after getting glutened every other day for two weeks, and I was really messed up for a few weeks after that. That just came from sauces and stuff. That whole thing with eating 4 pieces of... -
ARCHIVED Social Life?
munchkinette replied to Jenny (AZ via TX)'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The social life hasn't been too difficult, mainly because 2/3 of my friends have some kind of food allergy or intolerance as well. We are one difficult group, so we do potlucks. Every now and then I have to stay home when they go out if they want to go somewhere specific, but normally that isn't an issue. We just pick places that have a variety of foods.... -
ARCHIVED Bloomington, Indiana (and Maybe Indy)
munchkinette posted a topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I have to go to Bloomington, Indiana for a business trip. So far on this board it looks like good options are: Lennie's, Outback, Biaggi's, and Cheeseburger in Paradise. Are those still valid? Some of those names I found from older posts. Any good grocery store recommendations? Places to avoid? Last time I visited was right after going gluten-free, so I only... -
I could eat oats for the first year I was gluten-free. After one year I started getting the same old symptoms, mainly fatigue. All that cleared up when I cut out oats. I'm not sure if it was because of the oats themselves or because of contamination, but I've been to scared to try again.

ARCHIVED Do I Say I'm Gluten Intolerant Or Celiac?
munchkinette replied to Terbie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Honestly, I tell people in restaurants that I'm allergic to wheat and gluten, because they understand that the most. It's not the same thing, but "allergic" sets off the correct flags for them about checking with the chef. (I am allergic to wheat as well.) I normally tell people I'm gluten intolerant. Sometimes I'll say celiac if they aren't sure what... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Pizza In Bloomington Indiana!
munchkinette replied to ladybugpumpkin's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Has anyone else tried this restaurant recently? I have to go to Bloomington in two weeks for work, and I need to find some food options! Do they bake the gluten-free pizza in the same area as the regular pizza? -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Restaurants In San Francisco?
munchkinette replied to bellabrit7's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I also discovered that Mariposa baking has a cafe in Berkeley. I need to try it. I just tried Zadin, which is in the Castro in SF. I had gluten-free deep fried calamari. It was awesome. -
ARCHIVED Is Anyone Here A Nutritionist/dietician?
munchkinette replied to Breila's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I just had this question myself. I'm kind of interested in taking some classes. I'm self-educating quite a bit, but I need a better framework for all that I'm learning. I'm not really afraid of science. I'm not even sure where to start though- it can be hard to get into community college classes because there isn't always room. It doesn't seem like there...
