  1. Cool, thanks. That helps with the grocery too. They don't have Whole Foods.
  2. Can anyone suggest some good restaurants in Eugene, Oregon? I'm going up the weekend of 11/7 - 11/9. We are planning on seeing the football game, then going out to dinner. I know they have no shortage of natural food stores there, but I know nothing about the restaurant situation.
  3. I am retaining an extreme amount of water. My guts are so swollen, and I don't know why. It's not just my lower guts- it's higher too, like stomach and liver area. I've felt like vomiting since I woke up yesterday morning. I'm not peeing even half as much as I should for the amount I've had to drink. I haven't eliminated since yesterday. This doesn't...
  4. Thailand is super easy- one of the easiest countries for celiac. You really only need to be careful of two things: First, Chinese influence (more in the north) means soy sauce. Otherwise, Thai food only uses fish sauce, and the menu will tell you whether they use rice noodles or Chinese style wheat noodles. American Thai restaurants are generally bad...
  5. That's just it- I don't know if that's what it is or not. I tend to avoid it both because I sing and because of acne. For a while I tried eating a lot of different types to experiment (yogurts, cheeses from other animals, etc) but I still couldn't come to any conclusion. All I know is that a huge dish of ice cream is BAD. I had cheese the other day and it...
  6. I'm not in college, but in retrospect that's when I started having issues. Basically, I was really tired back then. I thought I was overtraining because I was running so much at the time. I found out I was anemic. I am still struggling with over-training issues, and I still have trouble identifying when that is happening. I think my over-training threshold...
  7. Oh yeah- I totally binge eat after a glutening. This summer was the worst glutening I've had since starting the diet. Normally it takes one week to feel better, but this time it took two. Let's put it this way- it was during a binge during this glutening that I actually stuck my finger down my throat to throw up. That is the first time in my life that...
  8. Actually, it's much easier to get enough from the sun than it is from foods for people who have lighter skin. Melanin makes a huge difference though.
  9. Ah, ok. I misunderstood. I guess I should avoid dairy. I really just want to find out what my issue really is. If I'm doing the same kind of damage as gluten does, I want to avoid. If all I really get is acne, I'm more inclined to cheat.
  10. Don't forget Dosa on Valencia and 21st in SF. They have a whole chart of allergens for each dish on the menu, and they update it as the specials change. I love this place. I asked them about contamination. They do use the same giant grill, but it's big enough that they can cook the wheat dosas on one side. There are only about 3 things (wheat dosas) on...
  11. Dairy causes some congestion for everyone. That's the reason why singers never/rarely eat dairy. I cut way back anyway when I started singing again. I do have breakouts that are noticeable, but my acne is bad enough anyway that it isn't always obvious. I can't figure out how to get rid of it! lizard00: Lactaid isn't for an allergy. Lactaid is lactase...
  12. This is interesting. I've been taking a nutritional science class lately, and my teacher keeps stressing milk because of vitamin D. I can't handle milk though. She talked about problems with rickets as people get more paranoid about sun exposure. As a result, I stopped wearing sunblock when I run. It's just one hour, and it's early morning 8:00 am sun. I...
  13. I'm on the fence about whether I can have dairy. It seems like lactaid helps me a lot, but sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes I feel gassy and I think my skin gets worse (acne and eczema). Other than that- it has been hard for me to tell. What else happens to people besides GI stuff? I think my belly gets big sometimes, but I don't have the same symptoms...
  14. I've seen recipes for Roti that call rice flour.
  15. I've had to cook a lot more in the last several months because I'm more sensitive. I cook a lot, especially in the crock pot and keep everything in tupperware in the fridge, or in the freezer. It's much easier to deal with nutrition in general, and I'm not tempted to eat "quick fixes" which might be risky gluten-wise. If you can, look into the crock pot....
  16. I just watched this episode of Good Eats. Alton Brown makes his own chili powder. Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link
  17. Ew. I always thought their chocolate was disgusting, waxy tasting, and too sweet, but this is just bizarre.
  18. I have a tendency to overdo things. I can tell you that running 6-7 days per week is too much. You need rest days. I get antsy if I don't do anything at all 7 days a week, so I go for walks on rest days. You need to alternate muscle groups at the very least. Some trainers will tell you that the rest days are just as important. I hate when they tell me that...
  19. Even when I don' t have the celiac belly, my stomach still gets bigger all day long. It's an entire size smaller when I wake up in the morning. As a result, my jeans seem to stretch out a lot between washings, and then they don't hold in the tummy as well. I can't be the only one with this problem. I have no idea what jeans look good on me. I either have...
  20. Exactly- simple. I want to be able to use two or three flours at most. I'm interested in learning more about amaranth too. I'm curious if I can make mock granola out of it.
  21. I always tip well when the waiter can tell me exactly what is in my food!
  22. I don't get up to Sausalito much anymore, but they have a Molly Stone's grocery store. When I worked on Fremont St. downtown, my gluten-free coworker and I used to go to Open Original Shared Link a lot. I don't remember if he emailed them first or called ahead, but they do know what is in their stuff. I'd double check the ingredients, but several months...
  23. This is reassuring. I'm a travel junkie, but a bit paranoid about it after my last trip. I had to come home early because of the food situation. Are hostels with kitchens common? I'm also interested in programs like couchsurfing.com and Open Original Shared Link but I worry that I might be a rude guest if I don't eat what I'm offered.
  24. Thanks for the offer. I just talked to my brother, who is also a trainer and gluten-free. (He's not as sensitive as I am, so I can't always just ask him with the food.) He seemed to think I was overdoing it and needed more of a break, and more calories. That's so frustrating though- I feel like the fitness is so slow for me already, so upping calories...
  25. I've been working out A LOT lately. I joined a boot camp program in the mornings, and I'm planning to run a 12K in a few weeks. I'm trying really hard to lose weight, so I've been cutting calories. I lost about 5 lbs in July, I haven't lost anything since the middle of August. I was totally gluten-free during that time. Then I got glutened about two weeks...
