  1. Is that from Celiac though? I don't drink any grain alcohol, but I've got some degree of allergy to wheat. I get really stuffy if I drink grain alcohol, but that happens a lot less or not at all with other hard alcohols like real tequila.
  2. What kind of experiences have people had with the labeling in the Whole Foods salad/prepared area. I've had a few clearly labeled things from the deli before with no problem. Today I noticed something- I got all my salad at the bar, and went for the dressing. I wanted the balsamic vinaigrette. It was labeled "contains soy" but the label said it contained...
  3. I'm curious- how old are you two? If I heard "that's weird" from a 15 year old I wouldn't think anything of it. If I heard that response from a 35 year old, I would think it an odd response. Either way, some people still haven't heard of gluten, so it may seem out of the ordinary to them. We talk and think about gluten constantly.
  4. I think this is a good point. It's not just bacteria either. Plants do assimilate outside DNA. Chloroplasts were originally endosymbionts. Plants can also have polyploidy in a way that a lot of animals can't. Plus, there is some evidence that humans can also assimilate outside viral DNA into their genome. Here's an example, and I'd heard some other examples...
  5. I have not had the experience of losing too much weight. Before I went on the diet, I remember thinking how awesome it was that I could eat unlimited junk food and never gain weight. Then I discovered why! I was basically starving myself because nothing I ate was absorbed. I put on weight after going on the diet because my body healed and I could absorb food...
  6. Monsanto. If something has been done to soy, it's Monsanto. (I think I would avoid soy on principle even if I didn't have a physical reaction.) They also did the Round-up resistant crops, and that Bollgard cotton. Bt cotton has a bacterial gene inserted into it that is toxic to some pests. The problem is that the larvae can become resistant within just a...
  7. I'm not sure what her deal was in terms of food. I knew she couldn't possibly have celiac if she could get away with something like that. (I'm only moderately sensitive, and I'd be in bed for a week if I did that.) I guess I was thinking of something along the lines of maybe only the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th structures got denatured, but the polypeptide stayed in...
  8. This brings up an interesting point. At what temperature does the protein denature? I had a friend who could eat deep fried stuff. I just don't know how. I definitely can't eat deep fried wheat. She claimed it was because the protein denatured. She had a PhD in cell/molecular biology. She clearly isn't as sensitive as everyone else.
  9. The question I always get in restaurants is whether I can still eat rice. Sometimes potatoes. I think this must be from having a lot of low carb diet customers. Actually, my worst experience was with dairy questions. I went to a restaurant with a friend who has to be very strict about that. He asked about whether the meatballs contained dairy. The waiter...
  10. I believe there is an official elimination diet which involves cutting out foods except just a handful of specific items. New foods are slowly added back in, one at a time, while taking note of symptoms. I can't remember what the specific foods are, so someone else will have to chime in. In general though, an elimination diet is a really important tool...
  11. I use Pure Alaska Omega. It contains no soy, and it's one of the only brands I've found that is sustainable. (The oil is recovered from the Alaska salmon fishery.) I got mine at Costco for about $18. I've seen it on Amazon and some other places. Ingredients: Fish Oil (100% Natural, from Wild Alaskan Salmon), Softgel (Gelatin, Glycerin, Water), Vitamin...
  12. Soy sauce. It's obvious on it's own, but I'm always surprised by how many non-Asian salad dressings have it. Annie's Goddess dressing is the one that I totally didn't expect, because it definitely doesn't taste like it.
  13. My acne was crazy before I went gluten free. I mainly had the really deep painful ones, and they took weeks to heal. It took me 20 minutes to put on concealer every morning. It almost totally cleared up after being on the diet for a few months, and stayed that way for a few years. Then it came back. I then realized I had to eliminate dairy, and later...
  14. I saw this in the NY Times health section. Open Original Shared Link What's the connection? Is it just that celiac and scleroderma are both autoimmune diseases? I'm pretty sure my gran had both of them (according to my mom), but when I was alive she had limited movement anyway because of age and several other issues like rheumatoid arthritis.
  15. I agree, it does depend. I actually take it one step further and buy "pastured" eggs, but that's just as much about taste for me. After tasting eggs in other countries, I've decided that most of the eggs in this country don't really taste like eggs. I eat nothing but eggs for breakfast when I travel internationally, partly because of my limited gluten-free...
  16. Just curious- why not? Watch the movie Food, Inc. Conventional poultry farming practices are pretty disgusting.
  17. Oh yeah, I've been on this diet a while now. I know where the gluten is hiding.
  18. I ended up choosing one of the Nutiva Hemp products. The guy at whole foods said he thought it tasted the best. Most of the hemp and rice proteins just don't have as much protein per serving. I think the one I got has 11 grams. That's about half or one third of what some of the other powders have per serving. So how much protein do I really need IMMEDIATELY...
  19. I started a weight training program recently, and I'm trying to find a post-workout protein source (bars, powders, shakes) that doesn't have gluten, dairy, or soy in it. Other than keeping beef jerky in the car, what are my options? My preference is a bar, but I'll take any suggestions.
  20. Yes and no. My mom started eating a lot of gluten-free things when my brother and I came home to visit. Eventually she started doing it more because she noticed that she felt better. She eats 95% gluten-free now, and thinks she is moderately gluten-intolerant. So although she started doing the diet when she didn't need to, she found out that she did actually...
  21. This is absolutely true, for multiple reasons. First, many fruits and vegies are selectively bred for size, sugar content, and taste. When you select for one trait you often select against another trait, like nutrient value. Although I don't have a problem with genetically modified produce in general, sometimes that's another way to lose nutrient value. The...
  22. Yes, I definitely have trouble with fatigue. Originally it seemed like it was just from anemia, but I realized it was gluten. After two weeks of my first elimination diet I ate gluten for one week. I slept for maybe 16 hours a day for that week! My university has a lot of stairs, and I usually take forever to go between classes after I get glutened. I also...
  23. Oh man, I should know this better than anyone. The whole reason I figured out the gluten intolerance in the first place was 3 years in a row of anemia despite the supplements, which went away just a few months after changing my diet. I think I need to get back on the multivitamins again. I always take my probiotics and vitamin D, but I haven't been...
  24. I thought about this for my own situation, but I don't think it worked. I was doing the paleo diet until a few weeks ago, and getting at least 4000 mg of potassium a day naturally through all the vegies I was eating. (RDA is 4700 for me.) I was getting very little salt on this diet as well. I stopped the diet and started getting more salt than potassium again...
  25. What is wrong with me? All this time this thread was here and I didn't realize it. I just posted a thread about this problem in the "Related Disorders" section. I'm having major sleep deprivation issues because of water retention and peeing. It looks like it's pretty common on this board. I have recently been glutened, but I haven't had this problem after...
