  1. Australia is easy. They have better gluten free food in all the grocery stores. I brought some home in my suitcase. FYI- the potato chips, tortilla chips, and candy often have wheat (or glucose syrup), and those things are my normal snacks here in the US. However, I found that gluten-free cookies were everywhere. Even in the snack bar at the Bridge Climb...
  2. What's the deal with Provigil? I just got a prescription for it today, but some of my searches indicate that it has gluten. What are some alternatives? What responses have come back so far from the manufacturer?
  3. I think it's ok now, but my mother said it was insane last weekend. She had to drive out into Carmel Valley (toward one of the fires) and left ASAP to get out because the air was so bad. That's in the valley though, and that was last weekend. There's a huge difference between the valleys and Monterey on the coast. The air patterns should make it fine.
  4. I have decided not to have children for a number of reasons. One of those is all the health problems I have- not just because I don't want to pass on those genes, but because I need to take care of my own health before I can take care of someone else's health. I can't have a kid with so many fatigue issues. I actually have several additional reasons for...
  5. So does that mean that See's labeling is pretty obvious? I know to avoid anything with cookie bits, but it's all that other junk like "natural flavors" and malt. So I can pretty much eat them? I always cut those chocolates in half first just to make sure.
  6. I've considered doing this a number of times for my dad and stepmother. The first year I had to stop my stepmother as she was about to put Wondra on my separate piece of chicken. She gets it now, but we pretty much just get into the habit of going to restaurants, or eating holiday dinners with my mom then going to their house for dessert. My mother seems...
  7. So it looks like Godiva is out, and I think Lindt is almost always out too. I can't figure out what the deal is with See's. What other options do I have for nice chocolates? I have my cheap options and chocolate bar options already.
  8. I bought a case of this stuff last year. I always have one of those travel soap containers full of them in my purse.
  9. I finally got all my blood test results. The only abnormalities were low lymphocytes (15% with normal being 26% - 46%) and just barely higher than normal neutrophil levels. After googling I discovered that low lymphocytes happened from a few things: HIV (yikes!), a couple other immune system problems, and something related to corticosteroid use. It's this...
  10. So I just went back to the doctor because I feel like hell. I just had a really bad glutening, but I was feeling really tired and lethargic for a month before that anyway. First, she ran some tests, including testing my vitamin D level. Does anyone else have problems with this? I looked into it, and it turns out that using any kind of laxative is bad for...
  11. I have tried, and I've been sorry. I picked pizza topping off the pizza right after I went gluten-free, so I wasn't sensitive enough to notice back then. NOW I'm just too sensitive. I will not eat food "processed on shared equipment" but I will still eat "processed in the same facility" because I haven't had bad luck yet. I may have to change that.
  12. I apologize if this isn't appropriate for this board. Is there a "market place" section in this forum? I want to sell my bread maker. Although I can easily sell it on craigslist, I thought I'd like to find some other gluten-intolerant person since the bread maker has never touched gluten, and it's so rare that we can buy used kitchen equipment.
  13. I've tried coffee grinders and the food processor, but they don't get things as fine as flour.
  14. I just called the mayo clinic to see about getting an appointment. I told the lady my issues and she said that fatigue plus gluten intolerance (non-celiac) weren't enough to get an appointment. She said she wasn't allowed to schedule time for that, and that I need a diagnosis. What the heck? The whole reason I need to go is to GET a diagnosis.
  15. The thing is, not all Latin American countries are the same. I'm pretty sure I would have had no trouble in Mexico, where corn is the dominant grain. I live on Mexican food. I'm guessing I'd do OK in Argentina as well, simply because they are really big on meat and the most developed country in the region.
  16. Same here- anemic for 3 years, nothing helped. I did my own research and found the diet. I never got a biopsy and some of my tests came out negative. I feel better when I can stick to the diet.
  17. I need help with makeup. I don't really know how to use it very well. I'd like to go to a makeup counter and get some help, but I have reactions to many brands. I don't know what is in Clinique, but it makes me break out like crazy. Same goes for MAC eyeshadows. Any suggestions? What major makeup brands with counters tend to be pretty easy on the skin...
  18. I love the Indian grocery. FYI- real regular dosa shouldn't have wheat. (Just the specific wheat dosa.) A lot of the mixes they sell do contain wheat.
  19. I just had a really bad two weeks, and I need to get my diet back on track. Any recommendations for detox diets? What do you do to take care of yourself after a glutening? What types of vitamins/supplements do you take?
  20. I just had a travel horror story in another country, but not here. (posted in gluten-free travel forum) Honestly, the US is much easier than I ever realized. I would recommend cooking everything that you can. Whole Foods has gluten-free beef jerky for times when you want some real protein. I love that stuff, even if it is salty.
  21. I just got back from a trip to the Dominican Republic. I was supposed to stay 3 weeks, but I came back one week early because of the food situation. I probably got glutened every 2nd or 3rd day, to the point that I couldn't even tell the separate occasions. I'd like to emphasize that I was NOT at an all inclusive resort. I'm sure those are probably accommodating...
  22. There's a book called The Paleo Diet for Athletes. I don't follow the Paleo Diet very closely, but I think this book is a good reference. There's a section on what to eat before a race. I believe this version of the diet allows for carbs before a race because you'll burn them off. I had gluten-free banana bread this morning before a 12K run. I make mine...
  23. I'm at the point where I need to remove something else as well, and I'm guessing it's dairy. Before going gluten-free I never had much dairy. I started eating more of it (and corn and soy and other stuff) when I went gluten-free because it was something I could eat. I think that's why I'm noticing other problems now. Whatever it is I can't eat, I'm getting...
  24. Dang it. ALL 10 of my food allergy (IGE) tests came back negative! (Dairy, egg, soy, corn, peanut, beef, tuna, salmon, chicken, rice - He basically tested 90% of what I eat every day.) Now what? My wheat IGE test was negative too, but obviously the gluten free diet helped me immensely. How do I start an elimination diet when there are so many possibilities...
  25. What about working in a restaurant that serves food with very little gluten? Southeast Asian food has very little wheat in it. Mexican food has wheat tortillas, but sometimes those are pre-made. (i.e. less flour floating around the kitchen) Just a thought... work in places where you can eat anyway.
