There's a local ice cream place here called Amy's ice creams, and they are kind of like a localized version of cold stone or marble slab.
Anyway.
I emailed them from their website and one of the two owners replied himself and said that most of the ice creams are gluten-free, etc.
I went that weekend and the second I said "wheat allergy" (I don't like having to explain celiac if I don't have to) they said, "so we need to get new scoops and stuff, right?" I'm still shy about it and before I could say yes, all 3 of the workers were getting new scoops, boards, and the ingredient listings. One even scooped out the top layer of ice cream in the one I was getting with a new scoop so that any traces of other ice creams were gone, and then got another new scoop to get my ice cream. One of them was interested in Celiac so I told her all about it. It was a great experience, and I let the owner know how great his employees did.
Even if I don't like their ice creams the best (their mexican vanilla tastes a bit like play doh, in a pleasant way
) I will go there because 1: they're local, and 2: they were so darned helpful.
It gave me hope

did u also get a burning sensation in ur stomach after u ate? they gave me levsin, but the side effects were way worse then the actual cramps, so i dealt without it
I do get that, and since being gluten-free, it seems to be my first indicator that I've been glutened, because within a 1/2 hour I've got D.
I used levsin also, but like the bentyl much better. It doesn't give me a problem. I also take tylenol when it happens.

I haven't had a problem, I take desogen which is a slightly higher dose. The sex drive definitely suffers
I've been on the pill since I was 15, but recently started having wierd periods where I would just spot instead of really bleeding. I don't know if that's related to the celiac or not, I guess we'll see.
I hated the patch, personally. It kept coming off no matter where I put it and it kind of gave me a rash. It also just plain made me nervous. Taking the pill every day is a daily reminder that I am safe!

Slightly off topic here - What is the white dusty stuff on the "old fashioned" gum? By that I mean soft gum, not the chiclety kind that everyone makes (so I can't find the good soft cinnamon dentyne anymore). I know that Dentyne, Trident and Wrigley's are all supposed to be gluten-free, so what's that dust made of?
I would assume it's cornstarch

I had unknowingly been eating very little gluten for years, after I found out about gluten and just looked at what I was eating without changing a thing, I realized that I could go several days without eating gluten. I always knew that too much bread made me feel icky, but never heard of gluten or Celiac and so I just thought it was too "heavy".
I noticed the same thing, that when I went gluten-free, I wasn't eating much gluten to begin with. I didn't eat bread regularly, and I was afraid of pasta because it made my stomach hurt (I thought it was the marinara sauce doing it). I don't really even like cake or cookies or donuts much. I think my body was trying to tell me that wheat isn't good for me. It was funny, I was trying to figure out what I would make for dinner now when I realized that 99% of my rotation was gluten-free anyway. Follow your instincts.

Welcome to my world
I have this gluten-free or not, though it's gotten a bit better. I ran the full gamut of testing and they couldn't find anything. Prilosec, zantac, nexium did nothing for me. The only thing that has helped is Bentyl, and that's an antispasmodic. If it gets really bad, I take phenergan.
-
Def use the immodium, and hell, cry labor laws!
It's not like you want to have a break to get your nails done, you have a disease and they can't really argue with your needs. Not if they know what's good for them, anyway.
In the US you get a 15 min break every 4 hours, legally.

6?? 4??? Mine here lists TWO L. Acidphilus and B. Bifdum
Does that mean I got sucky yogurt?
Yes. You got yogurt with only the two cultures required by law to be considered yogurt. Spring for the good stuff

I suggested testing for celiac to my Dr. Actually, I was sneakier and said food allergies/intolerances and she said the celiac panel. She was willing to test, but kind of apprehensive. When the results came back with the IgG high, she put me on the diet. I think in the time between that test and my follow up appointment, she did some research because when I said I had the classic symptoms of celiac at my first appointment, she said the symptoms are the same as most other chronic stomach problems. When I went back for the follow up, she was convinced I had it. It's all about finding a Dr. that will work with you, I just got lucky.

I know Tribe brand is gluten-free, and I think athenos is also.
-
I think Quaker just uses that blanket statement to cover their butts
I eat the lundberg ones, anyway. They are way yummier

Jeebus, that's soon!
I haven't made or had any, but I think the Whole Foods gluten-free Bakehouse has a chocolate cake, and several breakfast breads.
If you go the mix route, DO NOT MAKE IT YOURSELF!!!!
The last thing you need is the stress of a stressful cake. I was up till 2am the night before my wedding doing my flowers
Not my best idea.
-
I agree, I agree!!
If you need a gluten cake, just go buy one. It will be much easier, and less risky, all the way around.
Not to mention you'll know exactly how it's going to turn out

My chiro says people allergic to latex can't tollerate bananas becasue there is the same "?" kind of protein or something like that ....
Well, again the info from Brainy DH comes raining down...
He told me a while ago that benzene naturally occurs in bananas, that's right folks, the carcinogen benzene is in your gentle yellow friends! Of course, it's in like, tiny parts per billion, but still.
Benzene is also used in making synthetic rubber, like latex. Maybe that's the connection

If you are worried about it, you can just use cumin, chili powder, and garlic salt and it works just as well.

I do not drink Smirnoff Ice, however, I do know that it is either not gluten free in Canada or America... I'm sorry, I forget which one. But I wanted to warn you, and perhaps someone else can clarify this.
Smirnoff Ice is NOT gluten free in the United States, it is a malted beverage...

They talked about it in Dangerous Grains. I believe it's called the rectal challenge.
Well that sounds like fun
Maybe I'll start saying "I'd rather have a rectal challenge" instead of "I'd rather have a root canal"
Considering I am so terrified that I have to be heavily drugged at the dentist, I'd probably rather have the wheat up my butt

AS OF YESTERDAY Cocoa puffs and Trix BOTH STILL HAVE GLUTEN in them. I checked both their site, and the boxes in the stores. Sorry, but I am having a hard time believing this info you recieved.
Same thing in my part of the country

I hope you all are having a great weekend!
I survived my first gluten-free lock in with my girl scouts! I didn't get glutened!
They all had papa john's pizza, so I brought my own chebe crust & toppings. My co-leader and the parent that were there were good about not making me handle the glutened pizza, or potentially glutened popcorn.
The girls didn't even ask why I had a different pizza
the funny thing is that when I told the parent I had celiac disease, she looked at me as if my best friend had just died and said, "Oh my God, I am so sorry! That's just awful!"
I was thinking, not so much. You're the one that has to eat the papa john's, and I have my gourmet pesto pizza. Poor me.
I have a feeling the camping trips might prove to be more of a challenge...
How have you guys handled such situations, ie parties, sleepovers with kids, etc?

My husband was found to have a duodunal ulcer due to misdignosed celiac for about 26 years. I don't know if the duodunum (forgive my spelling) is small intestine area-I think it is. Found during endoscopy after being gluten-free for 13 months. It was still hanging around, but Dr. said it was in final stages of healing.
FYI
The duodenum is part of the small intestine, and that is where the majority of actual digestion takes place.

If you do any study of the still present primitive tribes that exist in areas like the Amazon you will find that although some 'war like' behaviors exist, they are human after all, in a whole these tend to be very healthy individuals with strong social and support structures. We should never generalize about any society. On an off note I follow a pretty much paleo diet and do quite well when I stick to it. Ahhh if only candy didn't becon so often.
I agree with the romanticizing primitive culture. Aside from the "war like behavior", there weren't very many! It's easy to be peaceful when other tribes are few and far between.

In the spirit of St. Patrick's Day coming up (though I make it all year),
Does anyone know if cook's corned beef brisket is safe or not? It's made by ConAgra, and I can't remember if they clearly label gluten ingredients...
Thanks!

Don't get me wrong, I love my dr, she uses an overall kind of approach and doesn't shoo you away with precriptions. She also sends a summary of your bloodwork to you, which has the basics in laymans terms.
I didn't know my platelets were high and my RBC's were small until I mentioned I had that in the past. I wasn't anemic this time, though I was pretty borderline.
I lost my summary that she sent, so I asked for a copy of the lab report. First, I was surprised that my cholesterol was higher than I thought, though not dangerous or anything. My triglycerides were really high, though! 257! I'm only 22! And not very overweight!
I did read, however, that high triglycerides and low hdl were found in children with untreated celiac, so maybe those will go down. Hopefully the same in adults. Eating flax now, just in case. Bring on the Omega-3's!!!!
What surprised me is that my SGPT (ALT) was low, that's a vitamin B-6 deficiency. No wonder I'm tired!
Just once, I'd like all of my bloodwork to be in the "within range" column
Glad I got the report! Although, my flipping out over blood work is the exact reason the dr says not to get too hung up on the blood stuff. It's making me see why she said it was celiac with just a high IgG, though...the other bloodwork supports it, too.
