Whatever you do, don't use topical benadryl! My allergist said it actually makes skin allergies/reactions worse! He told me to just lay on the cortisone...

ARCHIVED Red Dots Under And Above The Eyes
penguin replied to Ashley's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm sorry you have to be a pall bearer... I'm sorry for your loss... That said, I get those dots, too. I normally get them when I throw up, and usually only when I have that glass-digesting pain and I'm throwing up. The first time I had them was with mono. The dr. said they are caused by little capillaries bursting under pressure, not just... -
ARCHIVED Menstrual Irregularities
penguin replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My period was 10 days late last month, my first month gluten-free and I was coincidentally off the pill that month. Freaked me out. Before that, I started just spotting for my period and the dr blamed it on the pills (which I've been taking for 7 years) but I think the pill was the only thing making me have it to begin with. I was also a late starter,... -
My mom used to make these when we had leftover mashed potatoes! Of course, she used wheat flour... We usually had "breakfast for dinner" on those nights and had the pancakes with eggs and bacon. YUM!

ARCHIVED Gluten-free Glutening?!?!
penguin replied to Fiddle-Faddle's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I can feel kind of yucky with the gluten replacement foods, even Tinkyada makes me dopey if I have too much of it. I think a lot of it is because rice has at least a medium glycemic index. I had a gluten-free carrot cake yesterday and half way through the piece I went, "you know what, I don't really like cake!" Which is true, I don't, and didn... -
ARCHIVED Soy Free. gluten-free Dark Chocolate?
penguin replied to lisaemu's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I love their milk and white chocolate bar, and I'm not really a fan of chocolate! SOOOO GOOD!!! -
Sorry if you mentioned this somewhere else, and it's totally off topic, Yvonne, but 2 dozen sandwiches? So do you have twenty-four children or 4 very hungry football players?

ARCHIVED Office Party! Quick! Help!
penguin replied to penguin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think they can ship anything wherever.... here's the website: Open Original Shared Link So far I've just had their bread (eh, edible), their sugar cookies (awesome!), and I'll let you know how the carrot cake is... The cafe itself has wheat bread, but I don't think they bake it themselves, since they don't have it for sale. The only other things... -
ARCHIVED Office Party! Quick! Help!
penguin replied to penguin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
HAHA! I wish! Note the flabby arms I could use to hang glide on my avatar! So they really WILL think I'm on a wacky diet. Last time someone asked me if I was on Weight Watchers Yeeeah, note the story in the first post. She would not let up! And I had been gluten-free, like, a week. And she was 3 inches away from me, I practically had to... -

I just realized, after posting this, that I have a WHOLE FRIGGIN GLUTEN FREE BAKERY IN TOWN! I'm an idiot...I always forget it's there I just hope I can get there, on the clear other side of town, and back on my lunch break Thanks for the suggestions...but now I have another question... How do I deal with the STUPID COWS I work with... -

ARCHIVED Office Party! Quick! Help!
penguin posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So I work at a satellite office, but I have to go over to the main office today because there is a birthday. I don't want to be the only one there without cake or something to eat! I'll get asked lots of questions and likely be ridiculed (my coworkers aren't very nice, the last time there was a birthday, I couldn't eat the cake I provided and the office manager... -
ARCHIVED Recurrent Tonsillitis
penguin replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had recurrent sinus infections so they took out my adenoids, although I wish they would have gotten the tonsils while they were in there, then when I got mono it wouldn't have been nearly the hell it was. My mom was a nurse for 15 years and said she had never seen anyone that sick and survive... and then the stomach problems started My mom had... -
I'll tell her, but I think she's ahead of me in that dept.... I think Lollie's mom needs the education I get sick if someone *thinks* about using flour

ARCHIVED gluten-free/df Breakfast Ideas?
penguin replied to VydorScope's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I always had that problem before going gluten-free, and the problem is pretty much gone now. It sounds like a hypoglycemic problem to me. Make sure you have a grain and protein with breakfast. Hypoglycemics really need to keep their meals balanced. -
He may just be frustrated that you got sick. You get frustrated when that happens, right? He may also be frustrated because he has to deal with you being sick for a few days, which, lets admit it, we're no fun when we're glutened! Dunno. Guys are wierd.

ARCHIVED So Im Going Away For A Weekend For The 1st Time Since My Dx
penguin replied to Moongirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
In an "accidental glutening" first aid kit I would have: - Imodium - Phazyme - Tylenol - Antacid - Benadryl (if nothing else you'll be knocked out) - Red Bull (lots of B vitamins and helps me feel human after glutening) - Heating pad or hot water bottle Good luck venturing out into the world! -
As far as things said by people who should not have passed their medical boards, you win.

By sensitive did he mean that you would be so sensitive that you reacted to the toiletries, or that you would be so sensitive as to be paranoid about it? The context is a world of difference... My husband is very supportive, but thinks I'm overdoing it with some things. Like new wooden spoons and not kissing him after he's eaten gluten. Although, since...

ARCHIVED Hello, I'm Carol And My Test Came Back +
penguin replied to Carolita's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Congratulations on your Celiac diagnosis! I know it sounds strange, crass even, to congratulate you for that, but think of it this way: now you know what's wrong and you know how to make it better! The gluten-free diet isn't a big deal, really, when you get used to it and you learn how and what to eat. I've only been gluten-free two months, and while... -
ARCHIVED Quick Fix (nulev) Does It Really Work?
penguin replied to DarcyandMike's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think I've taken that before, but it didn't work for the problems I was having. It tasted like a postage stamp. I didn't respond well to sublingual antispasmodics... I do, however, take an oral pill antispaz called Bentyl when I need to, it's great. I find a great deal of relief that way, especially if I catch the symptoms early. It's in the same category... -
ARCHIVED Explaining Gf As Lifestyle Choice.
penguin replied to dogear's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
To me, the blood type diet seems to be a load of crap. A huge load of crap, and it's just another diet fad like the cabbage diet or the three day diet. I wouldn't put much stock in what they say. For my blood type, A, I'm supposed to eat a lot of grains and starches. Heellllooo, I have Celiac disease, not going to work. The type A is common in European... -
ARCHIVED What Happened?
penguin replied to penguin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I am eating yogurt, I try to at least once a day, but I don't know if I'm getting enough cultures. I'm eating Cascade Fresh yogurt (btw, the green apple pie flavor rocks!), which has 8, but I didn't eat any over the weekend. I think I'm going to go the probiotic route and see if that helps. As far as I know, my only food problems are gluten and tree nuts... -
ARCHIVED A1 Steak Sauce
penguin replied to carriecraig's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes. Kraft will ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS list gluten-containing ingredients on the label. I use it all the time with no ill effects, and I'm really sensitive. It makes the dry grilled steaks at restaurants taste better. ENJOY!!! -
ARCHIVED What Happened?
penguin replied to penguin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Haha, no. I drink too much maybe once every four months, if that. Maybe an occasional glass of wine or margarita inbetween, I'm not a big drinker. My dad and uncle both died of alcoholism and drug abuse, so I generally stay away from it. Last weekend I was at a bachelorette party at a ladies-only club (I think you know what kind I mean ) and drank...
