ARCHIVED Rice Cakes
penguin replied to jtangema's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've seen them at Sun Harvest (Wild Oats), Whole Foods, Randall's (Safeway), and any other small health food stores I've been to. They're good, too! They're heartier and have a better texture than quaker. -
I was with friends this weekend, and as we were eating brunch at this restaurant, one of my good friends said, "well, if gluten is such a big deal, then why weren't you sick all the time?" I said that I was sick all the time for the last three years, and that I was very good at hiding it. Even DH didn't know until I did the testing. She knew I was sick some...

ARCHIVED Grocery Store Rotisserie Chicken
penguin replied to penguin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I do have a boston market near me, it's just so dang expensive. I forgot a grocery store, we have an Albertson's too. Thanks for telling me about Sam's! I guess I'll have to call the store and ask what brand their chickens are... -
ARCHIVED New Discovery! (for Me Anyway)
penguin replied to frenchiemama's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Salted butter can't go rancid (the beauty of salt) so it's fine in a butter dish on your counter, keeping it room temp and spreadable. I think it's good for a couple of weeks that way. If that makes you nervous, try using a butter bell or butter boat... Open Original Shared Link The bells work particularly well for unsalted butter, since that can go... -

Thanks We got married July 15th of last year (hah, took me a minute to remember the date, stupid brain fog!) Hope you find a good anti-nausea drug! -
ARCHIVED Anti Nausea Med
penguin replied to terps19's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It's a script. I've never taken it when I would otherwise be functional (I only take it for the glass pain and I'm down for the count when that happens) but it makes me nice and sleepy. I think it affects everyone differently. One time I took them and managed to get to work, but I wasn't too functional, my tummy still hurt If you're on antispasmodics... -
ARCHIVED Grocery Store Rotisserie Chicken
penguin posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I thought I remembered a thread about rotisserie chicken at grocery stores, but I couldn't find it... I'm really wanting to just buy a chicken tonight since DH is working late and I don't want to cook, does anyone know if at least some/most are gluten-free? The stores I have available are: Randalls (they are a Safeway division and use their... -
ARCHIVED How Strict Do We Need To Be?
penguin replied to radman's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You know, one of the biggest things that went away was the hypoglycemia, but if I get glutened, it comes back a little bit. It's wierd to feel hungry like a normal person. I have read that hypoglycemia is a symptom of Celiac. Makes sense to me. -
ARCHIVED Anti Nausea Med

Makes sense to me, I have them because I have glass-digesting pain at times and can't keep anything down long enough for it to absorb! There's nothing worse than throwing up partially dissolved pills, YUCK! Sticking something up my butt is much better than that Doctors give them to people with migranes a lot, they work, but knock you on your butt... -

Quaker says that NONE of their products are gluten-free because they process so many other grains. Sorry. -

I love love LOVE the scouts thing! What a great idea! (I'm not biased or anything ) Even with a "normal" troop, they'd be ok probably. I know with my own scouts, they're really understanding about the health problems other people have. They may be in the minority, since one of the scouts' dad has ALS and they've been dealing with that since daisies... -

Man, all of the stuff I miss when I'm gone for the weekend! Welcome, Radman! So glad a dr. is on here! You'll find that many of us are adamant because life before gluten-free SUCKED! I feel lucky that I only had problems for 3 years before dx. I'm also glad that doctors aren't throwing narcotics at me any more for stomach pain. When you're doubled... -
Oh the things that college health center doctors will tell you: After telling the doc that I threw up a lot, "Are you sure you don't have an eating disorder?" Apparently 19 year old girls can't be sick. Make an appointment to see the nutritionist. After rating kind of low on one of those exhale and make the ball rise tests, without any athsma...

I use the phenergan suppositories, personally. They work fabulously. -
ARCHIVED Help Me Find Something To Drink...
penguin replied to penguin's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I had a lot of fun at La Bare, and I actually have not a clue what I drank, because after a couple of vodka tonics, um, I didn't pay much attention. I wasn't as concerned mostly because they only had beer in bottles (I guess since it's a ladies only club they didn't think it was worth it to have beer on tap) I don't think I got glutened, though... -
I know, I went back and edited it because I forgot to mention it...sorry!

It's because communion isn't just a symbol in the Catholic Church. The bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ. That's the difference between Protestant churches and the Catholic Church. We could get into Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation (although Lutherans are into the transfiguration part too), but it's not necessary. The actual...

It depends on your parish priest, your diocese, and who your bishop is. It also depends on who talks, and how your priest really feels about certain aspects of canon law. Lay Catholics can still participate in communion by having wine only, but that's not an option for a priest.
-
It's kind of hard to receive holy orders when you can't receive communion. And I believe canon law states that the communion wafers have to be wheat. It's a huge contraversy. An 8 year old's first communion was invalidated by the church because she was given a rice wafer. This is from an article in the National Catholic Reporter: Open Original Shared...

My stomach has been kind of off today. It's been making a lot of noise, bloated, looser than normal... So I start panicking. What if it's dairy? I've never had a problem with dairy before, where did this come from? Did I even have dairy? Just cascade fresh yogurt, and I eat it all the time, what happened? Why would I suddenly be intolerant? ...

ARCHIVED Hot Chocolate
penguin replied to mdono's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use the recipe on the box of Hershey cocoa (only I usually do it with the special dark) and I add cinnamon and vanilla. YUMMMY! -
Unless there is another reason to keep your diet so limited, some of those things are ok. Generally, with processed foods, you have to read the label. Absolutely no wheat, barley, rye, oats, spelt, or trictale. No question. Wheat and barley (and oats I guess) are most commonly found in processed foods. True, some lunchmeat and hot dogs have gluten...

Connection Between Grapes And Gluten?
penguin replied to Flyingmango's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I think there are a lot of tannins in red wine...that might be a problem. I know the skin of the red grapes are chock full of good for you chemicals, but they're powerful and you may be reacting to them. -
Welcome! That sucks that you're in college and got dx'ed. At least you can feel better! I just got dx'ed 2 months ago and I graduated in may, so I barely missed that bullet. Gluten free doesn't have to be horribly expensive, and you can do most of your shopping at your friendly neighborhood wal-mart or grocery store, depending on where you are. Lots of companies...
