SadiesMomma is correct when she states that she really can't shop around for doctors. The average American would be surprised to learn that most doctors don't treat Medicad patients. I put my mother in law (82 yrs old) on Medicad and I was under impression that that's all she had; so I called her doctors to tell them that she has changed over to medicad...

ARCHIVED Several Yrs Of Illness
debmidge replied to tjb1226's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yankee DB, sorry it took so long for me to get here...sort of got lost in the boards. My husband is very interested in the meds for depression ..but, he gets bad side effects from them. they work wonders on him, but he has to get off of them as they stimulate his nervous sys too much & gives him constant shaking (even in his sleep!). He tried pyscholoanylsis... -
ARCHIVED What Were Your Symptoms?
debmidge replied to HappyCat22's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
SteveW -- A comment. I would add "hernia" to the list of celiac disease symptoms for this reason. My husband has probably had his celiac disease since he was 27, he's now 53. Diagnosed and gluten-free since 10/03, so he's still 53 yrs old. In the past 10 years he has had 3 hernia repair surgeries: 2 on one side and one on the other and he is... -
Sara: Thanks for the reply on the number of continuing ed hours. Even though it's a pain in the rump to do, I am glad that it exists because it keeps doctors up to date, as well they should be. My business has the same idea. The insurance industry changes, especially these days, and there aren't enough hours in a day to cover all of the material which...

Oh.....I was avoiding this board because I felt that I already said too much that is negative..... I really like gfDoc and don't want to alienate you. You have some great gluten-free Kosher receipes on other board - I copied them and hope to make them ASAP. From my husband's first bout of celiac disease in 1977 to 1995 we've had a traditional health...

It's also depressing to go to a party like a wedding and not be able to eat anything, or being afraid to eat something plain that is normally gluten free.

My husband, undiagnosed celiac for 28 years, had been depressed to the point of wanting to end it all. The depression went on for several years. He cannot take anti depressants due to severe side effects. Then was diagnosed celiac disease last Fall 03 - and we notice that the depresssion is lifting - not all the way but somewhat. Dr. says the depression...

Hi All We are Celiac Ambassadors taking our message to the unlearned about celiac disease. That's the only way the info is going to get across: by those affected with this condition.

ARCHIVED Why Am I Not Improving?
debmidge replied to Jojes's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
All I have to add is that I am married to celiac...but in my experience I have allergies to herbs and herbal tea gives me intestinal pain & diarrhea. I see that you have herbal tea on your list. Maybe you have a food allergy along with celiac disease? -
ARCHIVED National Celiac Organizations
debmidge replied to Dwight Senne's topic in Publications & Publicity
I think you're right and maybe the groups should merge and then make a TV commercial about celiac disease. I've been thinking about writing a one page flier about celiac disease, just basic true medical text book info -- nothing but the facts -- and passing the flier out at the local supermarket parking lot, or under the wiper blades of cars (like the... -
Thank you all for some energetic discourse. Perhaps we can gather our energies and inform our friends, neighbors, co workers, relatives, etc. about celiac disease. We are the Celiac Ambassadors prepared to tell the world what celiac disease is (and maybe we'll convince some to get tested for it & save them unnecessary grief ). Good Spring to...

To all I think this section's topic is about how we are coping. I speak for my husband because he is too depressed to get on this website himself. I ask him to write for himself and he says "you do it, you know how I feel." Part of the coping is what our experiences are in everyday life and that includes how doctors inact with us. I use the collective...

ARCHIVED Cashew Macadamia Crunch

Angel, Any particular brand of Macadamias best for celiac? Thanks, Debmidge -
Sara: Don't take the doctor bashing personally as you're probably going to see a lot of things on this board that will make you flinch as a doctor. Remember, you are entering into the layman's world and you are getting a first hand look at the other side of the waiting room which you don't see. You have a rare opportunity to discover what makes a patient...

Yes please reply. How do other celiacs handle trips? Short trips or a week long? Do you vacation where you have an efficiency room? What do you order for dinner if you're at the restaurant? Broiled/baked chicken (w/o stuffing), Fresh broiled/baked fish, broiled meats plain? Or do you avoid taking a vacation? Or do you have to travel for work? How...

Yes, I am doctor bashing and I am not apologizing for it! Doctors are arrogant and quite smug when you tell them that you disagree with them. They are not God, although they think they are. I have been let down by so many Gastros I can't begin to enumerate them! Shame on them. Shame on the last doctor who told my husband that his disease was all in his...

ARCHIVED Having Issues With The Restroom
debmidge replied to neff-terence's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Dear Neff: Sorry my husband can't/won't reply himself - he is so depressed & can't bring himself to talk about celiac just yet. He was diagnosed in 10/03 after over 25 years as celiac without knowing it. Yes, he has same problem. He can't leave the house until about noon time. He hasn't worked in over 25 years due to this problem. Now that he's... -
ARCHIVED How To Deal With Disbelieving Family
debmidge replied to goodwitch's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Gosh! If I had a dollar for everytime someone told me that my husband's health problem was all in his head, I'd be a millionaire! Even our minister took me aside and asked me if he had a psychological evaluation as to why he couldn't work (his celiac is that bad as it's been untreated for almost 3 decades). My parents thought he had been just "coasting... -
ARCHIVED How Can I Gain Weight?
debmidge replied to lauderdalehawk44's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My husband is the celiac, I am the caretaker. He started Boost this week but can't digest a whole can so only drinks half a can a day. He's 130 lbs. at 5"10" - when he was healthy when I met him he was about 180 lbs. and muscular. I am overweight and I'd love to give him my excess! I told him to add gluten-free ice cream to the Boost in the Blender... -
If I were a millionaire I'd like to offer free testing to people. My sister in law refuses to get tested, even though her brother has a raging case of sprue and she shows the symptoms big time herself. Her reason: no health insurance & it'll cost too much. Denial is more like it; she is an avid lottery & bingo player and doesn't mind shelling...

ARCHIVED Kozy Shack Pudding
debmidge replied to angel-jd1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi All Our household likes Kozy Shack too. We can't get the regular vanilla flavor here in our side of NJ. What about the boxed mixes? Are they corn starch based? (My-T-Fine, Jello or Royal). -
ARCHIVED Several Yrs Of Illness
debmidge replied to tjb1226's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi All I wanted to add that my husband lost his weight and vitality to this disease. He had a physique like a Hercules when I met him (at 24) as he lifted weights; when he got sick he rapidly lost 30 lbs. of muscle and fat. For years now he can't work - he had been too busy all day either in the bathroom (remember undiagnosed celiac at that point) or... -
ARCHIVED Several Yrs Of Illness
debmidge replied to tjb1226's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi All My husband has just been informed that he has had celiac since he was 27 and he's now 53. Over the past 27 years three other gastros claimed he had Irritable Bowel Syndrome - new gastro says that they were the wrong diagnosis. The new gastro is correct because after 4 weeks on gluten free diet we noticed remarkable changes. Doctors are not... -
Marke Best wishes to you for a successful run eventually. My husband has had celiac since he was 27 yrs. old but it wasn't diagnosed until he was 53 years old. Too much damage occured and it robbed him of his vitality because it was untreated (i.e., diet changes). I wish there was something I can add to the advice, but unfortunately I am new to all...

debmidge replied to polishmafia's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
to Pete P.S. I am 47 years old and that's what I'd say to you if you were my son (but I don't have any children); so like a Mom, that's what I say.
