  1. My celiac husband is Danish/German/Italian. No Irish involved as he is third generation and knows that the great grand parents came over from the other side. There is one point I'd like to make and that is no one really knows who married into their families when their ancestors were in Europe. For example, his Danish side could be mixed in with Irish...
  2. I am anxious to know how far they are into the vaccine development and testing stage. I am afraid that with such little "press/media" coverage there is on celiac disease that Oxford could have a working vaccine without us knowing until it's been out there for years. Keep in mind that in the event that Oxford (Austrailia) has a vaccine, we woundn't have...
  3. My husband who is Celiac uses Clinique post shave healing lotion. I asked them over email if it's gluten-free; their response is for me to read the label. I am not a chemist, how the heck would I know what came from a gluten source. Does any one know of a suitable gluten-free replacement product for this? this product is like a face lotion, but fragrance...
  4. The original report can be found at celiac.com, go to Site Index, the find Diagnosis Testing & Treatment, then go to Austrialians Begin Work on vaccine. The report is foom 2002. It appears that a Dr. Robert Anderson of the Nuffield Dept of Medicine, University of Oxford, Australia was working on this.
  5. I read about it on Celiac.com and the article was a little old. I was wondering if anyone had learned anything new about it.
  6. We did not like the taste of Gillians bread crums, we feel that Hol Grain are the best.
  7. Has anyone heard any more on this topic? I thought I read something recently that in 1999 some researcher somewhere (I think in UK) was working on a vaccine. Does anyone know the progress, or was I dreaming this up?
  8. Tammy I'd like to know your experiences when you are back from vacation. My husband ususally go to Wildwood Crest (clean and free beach with motels right on the beach) but we are not going this year as this is his first Summer with celiac and we aren't even adjusted yet for doing stuff here at home. So next year we'll go again or maybe instead go to Long...

    ARCHIVED Disbelieving Doctor

celiacfreeman: In the absence of celiac sprue, what did the first doctor think your anemia was from? Debbie
  10. Hi When my husband first had to go gluten-free last Fall, I emailed Land o Lakes and inquired about the deli cheese (type that the deli person has to slice for you). they advised that this type of LO Lakes cheese was not gluten free. They advised that their "Natural" cheese is gluten-free; but I cannot find their Natural cheese (I think it's a dairy...
  11. how true about the gluten-free adult cereals - they are too sweet. Quaker used to make a gluten (off limits now) cereal called Corn Bran and we liked it before going gluten-free. Since it's corn, why can't a gluten-free manufacturer make this same type of cereal? it has corn bran as the fiber. I am trying to find pure corn bran to add it to my...
  12. ...I am still unsure about the answer. I didn't see anything on the referenced website about artifical flavorings, colorings yes, flavorings no.... Does anyone have first hand experience with certain brands of artifical flavorings, whether it's Wilton, Watkins, McCormack or Tone's (old Dukee's Foods). Thanks, Debmidge
  13. You're right. Until I knew what it was I too thought it was a "new age" fad diet (really did). Like low carb. Now I call myself the Celiac Ambassador as I try to educate all who'll listen as to what it is, etc. I know I am boring some people, but maybe it'll stick in their heads & they'll recall the info later on if they hear about it again...
  14. I am wondering the same thing. I'd like to make gluten-free cookies with pineapple flavoring, but can't find gluten-free flavorings. Does any one know if Tone's is gluten-free? Or McCormick's artificial flavorings? Is there a website which sells gluten-free artifical flavorings or colorings?
  15. I don't think a documented need is required for B shots for this simple reason: My sister in law and mother in law, who are not celiac, at least they've never been tested and I have a suspicion that my sis in law is celiac disease, but anyway they've been getting the shot from their G.P. for about 10 years now. Their complaint is that they are tired and...
  16. Susan: Wish you much good luck! You're story mirrors my husband's in that it took doctors many, many years to get the diagnosis correct. They kept saying IBS just until late 2003. He too was too sick to work or travel or attend social engagements. Undiagosed celiac disease is debilitating and creates its own stress. Keep you chin up and stay...
  17. Can anyone comment on this .....what's your experience with this? Do they help the depression and/or neurological symptoms? Anyone get them regularly? If yes, how often is recommended?

    ARCHIVED Fast Food

About 6 years ago I went on Atkins diet (I am not celiac, my husband is) and I was talking to a co worker in the office where I work, whose family owned restaurants here in NJ. She told me never to order tuna fish salad (mayo with tuna, no bread, etc.) at a diner as it isn't low carb because they deliberately add bread crumbs into it to stretch it...
  19. Thomas, Where do you hail from now? Any of those exotic places? I'm just in New Jersey. Where's your next location? Do you stay anywhere a long time? What place do you like the best? Sorry this isn't relevant to the post subject, but your blurb about places intrigues me.
  20. One of the makers of these products, either Boost or Ensure, has oat bran as an ingredient, which makes it have gluten. My husband called the Boost people & they said that their Boost is gluten free. This is what I would do: go to store, copy phone number of company on paper and the flavor of the Boost or Ensure that you want to buy. Go home...
  21. Mariann: That makes sense then. So, Sadiesmomma, let us know how you are when you get back. Deb
  22. My celiac husband always had intestinal sounds before going gluten-free; and still has them. My theory is that since he's been undiagnosed for 28 years, he probably has a good amount of villi damage and until that's cleared up he's going to get those rumbles. The rumbles do not result in loose bowel, just noise and some intestinal gas. As the "healthy...
  23. P.S. I need to use a substitute other than a bean flour.....due to intolerance to soy and bean flours.
  24. Hi All, I have an ingredient question. I want to make a carrot/pineapple cake & I have a gluten-free receipe from Whole Foods Market. I need to know what I can substitute for the soy flour*... The ingredients are: 1 and 1/2 cups brown rice flour 1/2 cup potato starch 1/2 cup soy flour* 2 tsp xanthan gum 2 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp...
  25. I haven't seen her posting anything in over a week. I know she was very ill with gall bladder/pancreatic problems. If anyone knows anything about her please advise as I've been worried about her for some time now. Debmidge
