  1. This must be where the confusion is coming into the conversation, the testing to which I am referring is ELISA, not IgG. Quackwatch.org was concerned about ELISA testing. They say that ELISA is dubious testing for delayed onset food allergies. ELISA is what York did. My jury is still out on this one....
  2. My point is that my m in law is 85 years old and only partially blind and if I can give her a brand name of a turkey product we are not playing "Gluten - Russian roulette" on Thanksgiving. I realize that the pre-stuffed birds are a no-no; but my m in law at one point told me in all seriousness that if she cooks something long and on a high temperature...
  3. Chantal, I wish I could....I don't have that kind of "seed" money. But we can dream, can't we?
  4. The article was about the tests being bogus, not the lab. That the tests don't prove anything....that they are not scientific.... it is Quackwatch.org I guess I am still confused....
  5. There are times like this that I wish I could grow my own food and raise my own poultry/meats.
  6. My problem with it is that my husband tested positive for foods he has not consumed in 30 years. For example: chili pepper, lentils, brazil nuts, cashew, almond, hazelnut (all nuts for that matter). York explained that perhaps he is getting these foods inadvertently. That's not possible. He doesn't go near nuts and eats plain, bland food. With...
  7. No, I'm from NJ and we have only two decent months a year to outdoor camp : July and August and it will rain almost every 3rd day. But I don't do outdoor camping; my idea of camping is The Hilton.
  8. Richard thank you for your information...I suppose I've been relying on inaccurate information and you certainly cleared that up for me....but what my info was is that the Self Basting Butterball Turkey, not the regular frozen Butterball turkey, was not gluten free. The self basting mixuture itself isn't gluten free. Perhaps you know something...
  9. RE: Change in ingredients in salad dressing by Outback To SeekingWholeness: Sometimes it's how you say it, and not what you say. You can try this method as it's worked for me; as there is no sense in letting the other person knowing how mad I am because mad won't change things for the better, but I am getting my point across without stepping on...
  10. Oh,, I failed to mention that this is because my M in law DOESN'T read labels (she's partially blind) and will buy the cheapest bird in the supermarket. To avoid gluten exposure, I kind of guide her as to what to look for. I am not able to go to the store with her due to distance and her at-home-helper doesn't read labels either. I'm stuck between...
  11. Richard, I am concerned not for myself, but because I need to give my mother in law brand names to purchase. I don't want her to get a Butterball injected turkey or any other brand similiar to that. In my case, I do not control the cooking on holidays, so I need to provide suggestions to my hosts (at their request). I guess there's a chance that...
  12. If I had money and time, I'd like to start a camp for adults who want to learn gluten-free baking and cooking techniques because this is exactly what I need! It could be a weekend camp/school/spa experience for singles or couples and teach Hagman receipes and other gluten-free cooking stuff. Celiacs and their families and other loved ones (friends...
  13. Reminds me of the joke: "I resemble that remark!" Don't overlook the swarthy Mediterranean types (my celiac husband). Black/brown hair, brown eyes, sallow-olive complexion. Perhaps one of the celiac groups can with permission of the celiac celebrity, put out a pamphlet with their photos and talk about their experiences with celiac?
  14. Hi everyone: Since labeling/ingredients/receipes of manufacturers change from year to year, I think it's best that we pool our knowledge and make a list of gluten-free turkeys and hams in order to make it easier for our holiday shopping. I know of two turkey brands: 1) Riverside (found at A & P) 2) Honeysuckle White (found at A...
  15. Title: F is for Fugitive Author: Sue Grafton Character in book, Ann, mentions to investigator Kinsey, that she's been a celiac since childhood. The author evens details some of the symptoms of celiac. I chuckled out loud when I read this page!
  16. Sorry, I too think it's the pharmacist's job to look up the info. I am sure that the PDR lists ingredients and every pharmacy has this book, or has access to it on line. Pharmacists are licensed and it's part of their job. I'd even compromise if the pharmacist or assistant would "assist" me by providing me with the drug company's toll free (or not toll...
  17. Dear Board Members: I will start this with a disclaimer: My opinion and comments in the forthcoming message are in no way to be construed as anti-Semitic. Rather it's a criticism of the US, state & local government and how they use their "food inspection offices." So please do not try to pick it apart and look for an offending "hidden meaning...
  18. It's absolutely evil for a drug company, prescription and OTC, not to know what's in their product. The FDA regulates them, so perhaps it's in our best interest to let the FDA know that we are unhappy with these types of answers: 1) We don't know if the product is gluten free. 2) We don't know if our suppliers ingredients are gluten-free...
  19. pturse: Please keep us posted. My husband has same troubles ....I am beginning to think that in the same manner that doctors thought celiac was rare, that they say refractory sprue is rare. Surprise! celiac is not as rare as once thought and now I am beginning to believe tht refractory sprue isn't rare either.

If anything, my husband's celiac has forced me to be a regular flosser (more than I used to in the past). I haven't explained this to my dentist, but he's impressed that I now floss very well at least once a day. Prior to celiac, I'd floss when I thought about it...
  21. Just recalled that Hormel may offer a spiral sliced gluten-free ham....
  22. Corn syrup is in a lot of foods that are sweet. I don't know how you are going to get around it with a spiral ham....unless the manufacturer uses brown sugar and/or molasses only. You'd have to call them. I had communication with COOK's (ham) last Spring and they advised that their ham was gluten-free.
  23. To BamBam's Husband: The thing with the Turkey is that Butterball's Self Basting whole turkey is off limits because Butterball injects it with a gluten-based self basting substance. For turkey try these brands: HoneySuckle White or Riverside. Both state GLUTEN FREE on their label. Perdue claims that their chicken and turkey are both gluten...
  24. RED, The subject is fascinating...I will await your conclusion post. I didn't realize Aminos were that powerful...I agree with you on the numbers of celiac for future. They are in our midsts and don't know it.
