Happy Happy Happy Bakery 157 Allen in NYC (212) 254-4088 website: www.happyhappyhappy.com (don't forget that last happy, yes there are 3 of them, only two happys give you another person's website). This is a pretty new store and someone at work heard the owner being interviewed on the radio on their way into work one morning a couple of weeks...

ARCHIVED How Do You Make Then Understand What It Is!
debmidge replied to roddi's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My mother in law once insisted something she made had no gluten in it because she baked it! She made this up: that gluten gets killed by heat. She took the "scientific" explanation of how the protein is treated like a virus in the intestines and figured it could be killed by heat. I guess it depends on who you are talking to as to whether or not... -
ARCHIVED Celiac In Toronto News Today
debmidge replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Publications & Publicity
Part of the Star Ledger article I didn't post as I didn't have enough time the other day: This is quoted from the 5/18/05 article itself: "It's frustrating to say the least," Pelly-Waldman said after the meeting. "I said to the bishop, 'What would Jesus do? Jesus would not deprive a child. I believe Jesus would have accomodated her'......... -
ARCHIVED Celiac In Toronto News Today
debmidge replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Publications & Publicity
Update to story of Haley Pelly-Waldman of Brielle, NJ -- the 9 year old who has celiac disease and wants a gluten free communion host. According to report in Wed 5/18/05 Star Ledger (main newspaper here in NJ), mother Elizabeth Pelly-Waldman's request was refused by Trenton Bishop, John Smith. The spokesman for Smith said the bishop is not in a position... -
ARCHIVED Attending Outings/gatherings

Biggest fear of eating off of someone else's barbeque grill: (not just marinades that aren't gluten-free) a lot of people toast their hot dog/hamburger buns directly on the grill. That's direct wheat residue who knows where on the grill rack.... -

ARCHIVED Gluten-free Day At Hersheypark
debmidge replied to ryebaby0's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
What is meant by "gluten-free" day at Hershey Park? Never having done this before, and I am sure others have same questions, what is there that's gluten-free? What should be expected going on that day there? Are all the restaurants gluten-free? Is there a website that will explain all of this? -

ARCHIVED Ratzinger--not Good For Celiacs
debmidge replied to celiac3270's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I can understand being in disagreement over low gluten vs. gluten-free hosts and it's a man-made rule that there must be wheat in host. But I have to say that I think the Catholic Church, as well as many other Christian denominations go to 1 Corinthians 14:33-36 wherein St. Paul takes on the issue of women in control at church. also note 1Timothy ... -
ARCHIVED Grits

I am specifically looking for corn grits. Concerned that Quaker, who handles wheat and oats, could have cross contamination. -

on a bad-hair day I wouldn't mind wearing a burka to work. -
Is Quaker brand of grits safe? Anyone get a reaction from them due to cross contamination?

ARCHIVED Ratzinger--not Good For Celiacs
debmidge replied to celiac3270's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am glad this is a non issue for my husband as he is not Catholic, but he cannot tolerate the smallest amount of gluten. Catholics who can tolerate it should be more thoughtful of your "sicker" celiac brethern. Those being hurt are celiac Catholics who know that they must take communion as it's a command of the church and have to decline due to... -
My only comment on this is that I have been buying corn flour for years - even prior to my husband being diagnosed with celiac disease. He noticed that perhaps certain brands could be cross contaminated as their packaging doesn't state GLUTEN FREE and they are: Shiloh Farms Bob's Red Mill He had reaction from these...or we at least think these...

ARCHIVED Celiac Disease And Neurological Disorders
debmidge replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My husband was misdiagnosed by gastros as IBS for 26 years about; he was a raging celiac with all digestive symptoms and doctors missed it. During that time he had "migraine equivalent" (visual disturbance with bright halos around things - halos that don't exist) and "restless leg syndrome." Now that he was diagnosed in late 2003 and went gluten... -

The only imput I can say, is keep contacting the local Archbishop's office or the Vatican itself to remind them to address this issue. It reminds me of Jesus' parable Luke 18 1-8, the point of which states that persistence pays whether in prayer or otherwise. Funny we should be on this topic again. I am reading "Russka" by Edward Rutherfurd; takes place... -
ARCHIVED "you Might Be A Celiac If....."
debmidge replied to VegasCeliacBuckeye's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
You are constantly wiping down the kitchen table and counters in an effort to rid the place of inadvertently strewn gluten crumbs from the non-celiacs' foods in the home. You get tears in your eyes when you notice that a manufacturer changed the formula and now makes their product gluten-free. While in the kitchen, you have physically restrained... -
ARCHIVED Does Band-aid Glue Have Gluten?
debmidge replied to anerissara's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
as many of you know, my husband is celiac and I'm not, but as to band aids I break out in terrible itchy rash from band-aids and I was reading Sully's Living Without spring 05 and it describes that this could be a latex allergy and not a reacton to the adhesive. The hives from band aids could be a reaction to the latex. I am allergic to so many things... -
ARCHIVED Some Rather Graphic Bm Discussion Follows

Not only BM consistency is a clue, but color. Especially noted is colorless, grey or tan, or even white-ish coloring. This cleared up after about a month gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease In The News

What a rush of memories that brought back for me, as this teacher sounds like the ones I had in grammar school (I went to a private, religious grammar school). How could the administration keep sticking up for this sick-o? If they didn't research her background before they hired her, they are guilty of wrongful hire. She should have been more concerned... -
MsSillyak screwed & first Poster about weddings, etc. My husband's diet is similar to MsSillyak's - no veggies and other good seasonings. We turn down weddings, etc. if we aren't close enough to bride and groom to ask about what's being served, etc. (My husband is very, very underweight from Celiac and can't afford to skip meals and is on an...

what about life Insurance? If you get no satisifaction from the appeal process, then go to your State's Dept. of Insurance, if it doesn't upset your relationship with your employer..... as insurers are regulated by the state and if the state feels that they are being unfair, they'll force the insurer to write your coverage.

Agree w/Sarah & celiac3270. Food manufacturers would then get lazy and not want to label the food properly as there's a "pill." What about people who could not afford this Pill & don't have prescription plan/insurance? What if the prescription plan/insurance won't pay for it? For example: Lactaid is OTC and not available as prescription; therefore...

But if we follow the theory, after long term avoidance of the food, the food should be re-introduced and the sensitivity should be gone. I can under stand cross contamination of nut products, but not the lentils. My jury is stilll out on this issue.
