ARCHIVED Tunafish W/mayo
debmidge replied to mandigirl1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Same goes for tunafish salad at diners. I once knew a woman whose family owned a few diners here in NJ and she confirmed that they use breadcrumbs to stretch the tuna fish out. It saves money for the diner. Ask for individual can of tuna with mayo packs (the only way to assure that there is no gluten). -
Support Groups In Northern New Jersey?
debmidge replied to newo ikkin's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Dear Newo: There used to be a CSA sponsored support group in your county (Dover Hospital I believe) but thye totally disbanded in early 2004. I am in northern Union County and would like to join a group or have someone help me start a group but in this area. As you are aware, traveling in North Jersey is terrible during rush hour and a simple 30 minute... -
ARCHIVED Which Do You Use?
debmidge replied to ILOVEOMC's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I agree, pure maple syrup is ikky tasting, so when I use it, I add a little Aunt Jemima to sweeten it up a bit. You need to acquire a taste for pure maple syrup and I just can't do that. -
ARCHIVED Lipsticks
debmidge replied to Lisa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I wrote to AVON almost a year ago and got a stupid response. They sent me a postcard which directed me to an 800 number, I called the 800 and they couldn't answer the question of gluten-free or not. I appears that they didn't want to be bothered; so I don't buy from them anymore. -
ARCHIVED Celebrities With Celiac?
debmidge replied to lauderdalehawk44's topic in Publications & Publicity
I saw those puppets before they were auctioned off, on FOX cable news. Was it Keith Oberson (or something like that...)? While the trial was going on the newsperson was reporting it; then they did a skit with those puppets. On the last day of trial they mentioned that the puppets were going on sale to raise money for CSA; and they had a little CSA... -
ARCHIVED I Know I Am Being Waaaaay Oversensitive Here

Using "Names" such as celiac, or PIA or Cherub is "passive aggressive" behavior. -
ARCHIVED I Know I Am Being Waaaaay Oversensitive Here
debmidge replied to skoki-mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ah, how I hate when people refer to others by health names or other names. My MIL calls me her Cherub because I'm overweight; she THINKS it's complimentary, and that's she's sooooo clever for thinking of this, she calls me this in front of her friends and family; and don't you think I hear the snickering of those listening? I've told her many times... -
Yvonne It might be "the" stupid question, but are you keeping a good amount of water consumption in you? I had a constip. problem years ago -- needed correction with minor surgery. Turned out I had an enlarged sphincter muscle that was acting as a"gate" so to speak. Once the "gate" was reduced, I no longer had a constip problem. Also, contributing...

Just a thought, but maybe the lady in the health food store isn't celiac but eats gluten-free for other reasons and that's why she doesn't get the reaction you do? Just a thought....I could be wrong...

Brenda I found your post interesting...my husband has celiac disease and he too cannot handle fruit/veg fiber. He had misdiagnosed celiac disease for 27 years and was finally diagnosed properly in end of 2003; just started this year eating babyfood banana and prunes in past couple of months and it seems ok. He cannot eat raw or cooked fruit/vegs...

ARCHIVED More Ranting About This Horrible Disease..
debmidge replied to SandyShoes's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It understandable for someone to say that food has been very important to them and now it's taken away. Food can be the one thing someone loves in life. Everybody is different and shouldn't be made to feel bad that they have/had a healthy interest in food: whether eating or cooking different foods. A hobby or sport isn't quite the same thing as creative... -
ARCHIVED Cheesecake Factory Spinach Dip
debmidge replied to jkmunchkin's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Cheesecake Factory has gluten-free menu? or gluten-free selections? -
I agree with Carriefaith (my husband and I agree that is) that we've had an epiphany on other medical conditions which are "hidden." Such as hidden disabilities. So while I am interested in celiac disease I am learning more about other diseases. celiac disease has made us understand better what limitations other "hidden" diseases can have on the patient...

ARCHIVED Damage/infection To Intestines
debmidge replied to leudy's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Leudy My husband who has celiac disease was diagnosed late 2003 and finally decided to have endoscopy a year later in 2004; by that point the minor celiac disease damage was healed but he had an ucler that the Dr. attributed to the erosion of tissue due to years of misdiagnosed celiac disease. The ucler was in the final stages of being healed, however... -
ARCHIVED Living Without--newest Issue
debmidge replied to celiac3270's topic in Publications & Publicity
I go in waves in buying magazines like Good Housekeeping, Ladies Home Journal, etc. and usually bring them home and throw them away as nothing in there remotely resembles my life (even before celiac). Anyway, my husband & I are in store & I buy Living Without - all the way home my husband grumbles over price of LW and tells me I buy too many... -
ARCHIVED I Want To Slap My Doctor In The Face
debmidge replied to Lena's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Lena; Don't fear a CT scan if you really need one. I had one last year and it wasn't bad...I've had worst tests. After the CT scan was over I went to mall and shopped and made sure to drink a lot of water. Dr. did CT as they wanted to rule out/in diverticulousis or ovarian cysts. Turned out to be ovarian stuff. All in all the CT scan was better... -
ARCHIVED I Want To Slap My Doctor In The Face
debmidge replied to Lena's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Lena, My husband has been ill for over 25 years and for most of those years he had 5 gastros tell him that he had IBS, colitis or ileitus - no one ever said celiac disease. Was unheard of. Many GP's missed his diagnosis too. Finally, 2 years ago, he changed gastros again - and new gastro upon hearing his health history after 3 minutes exclaimed... -

debmidge replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease

ARCHIVED Celebrities With Celiac?
debmidge replied to lauderdalehawk44's topic in Publications & Publicity
The bottom line is if the Celebrity WANTS to talk about it, they should not have to feel like it's a dread disease. No one, at least not me, is saying that the info should be forced out of them and splashed across ET. But if the celebrity is established enough and has their symptoms under control, for the most part, if they want to talk about it and... -
ARCHIVED Walmart Going Gluten Free
debmidge replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Jenvan, I too read "Nicked and Dimed, How NOT to get ahead in America" and it was thought provoking. A teenager I know who is set to start Univ. of Connecticut was mailed this book BEFORE semester starts in order for Freshmen to read it, and read it well! TMessage: This is life without higher Education. However, if I were to protest and boycott every... -
ARCHIVED Celebrities With Celiac?
debmidge replied to lauderdalehawk44's topic in Publications & Publicity
There is a lot of room for celebrities to compromise on celiac diagnosis. Celiac is not a dread disease and if there was more awareness about it those that are producing the projects would know that it's a minor inconvenience if their actor has celiac disease. If the celebrity is healthy enough to pursue a show business career, then it appears that... -

ARCHIVED Boyfriend/ Fiance With Celiac
debmidge replied to fuzzelfluff-04's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, my husband & I are married 26 years now; past 2 for him have been gluten-free. But before that he was sick for over 25 years with misdiagnosed IBS. I do not have celiac disease. Inasmuch as there are gluten-free food in stores, and some restaurants will provide gluten-free meals, the rest of the population isn't as informed as they could... -
sounds like BF doesn't believe about celiac disease and is testing you to see if you'll "crack" and get gluten; then he can say "see, I knew you could eat this!" Psychotic thinking.
