ARCHIVED Non-celiacs
debmidge replied to fisharefriendsnotfood's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Jackie, that girl was rude, but you're still young yet and you're going to run into a lot of people who are like her. Maybe she just wanted attention that day. I've had gluten-free brownies and they were great (I am not celiac, and these brownies were just like wheat ones). Don't dwell on it and try to forget about it. People like that don't deserve... -
ARCHIVED Dying On A Feeding Tube
debmidge replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Perhaps to allow you to sleep better at night over this, you should ask to see ingredient panel of the liquid nutrition they are giving her and maybe call the manufacturer. It could already be gluten-free and then just insist that they use that one. I have to say, however, my father in law, we don't know if he had celiac disease as he died before my... -
I read something over the last weekend that spina bifida (I think I read it in Dangerous Grains book) may be connected to celiac disease in that if the mother has celiac disease, and isn't eating gluten-free she may not be absorbing the proper amount of folic acid in her pregnancy diet which could lead to spina bifida in the unborn child. My husband's...

ARCHIVED Gluten Ataxia (only)?
debmidge replied to tiredofdoctors's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Tired of Doctors: what kind of practice did you have? I must have missed that (my computer/AOL is acting up and my cursor keeps jumping and it's going to and fro different posts...) As to collecting SSI, if you wait too long you will be disqualified....my husband was too ill to work many years ago, but he kept thinking he'd get better (during misdiagnosed... -

ARCHIVED How Were You Diagnosed?
debmidge replied to krisb's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
As hubby is a computer-phobe I am replying: He was misdiagnosed for 27+ years; went thru several gastros who all said IBS, one medical group was a large, prestigious medical group here in Union County North Jersey who will remain nameless. During the 27 years he ate whole grain wheat/oat/barley/rye products as per doctor's orders for the IBS diagnosis... -
ARCHIVED 100 (or More) Things To Do When You Are Glutened
debmidge replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sometimes when glutened by husband takes out his photo albums, old and new and flips through them while on couch. Or, he'll put on an old funny movie like Young Frankenstein or a Don Knotts one and get his mind off of his tummy. Yesterday he was a trooper.. we had to go to mall to get a size larger autumn weight pants for him (he gained 7 lbs since... -
Thanks for that idea...didn't know that something like that was sold, other than in Metamucil product. D.

Thanks for response....under normal circumstances I could make separate, but hubby can't have vegetables like a normal celiac. he just started eating canned vegetables and can't over do them. Before celiac, he ate a lot of shredded wheat and wheat bran as his source of fiber, now that he's gluten-free, lack of fiber is a problem.

Because of those who say Chebe is great I want to experiment with this mix. I want to make Foccacia Rosemary bread with it. Has anyone done this already and may have receipe or suggestions of what to do or NOT to do? My one concern about Chebe is that it has no fiber in it. Other than flax, would rice bran be an OK ingredient to add to my Foccacia...

That's true (I do insurance for a living) smaller groups pay higher premiums. There's savings in large numbers. Larger groups also have more clout to control level of coverages, premiums, deductibles, etc. But, every state has a Dept. of Insurance that oversees the plan's rules. But first talk to your HR person to see if they can rectify your insurance...

An insurance company reviews the doctor's reasoning for initiating a test and if the doctor presents the symptoms in the proper way, there's no way the insurer will deny the claim. This is like saying you had cancer, but no symptoms other than vague pain, just because your blood test shows normal white blood cells the insurance company won't allow a...

debmidge replied to Lisa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
PBM brand, we were told is gluten-free; my husband has taken this for over 25 years from when he was first misdiagnosed as having IBS and it should have been celiac disease. Anyway, he swears by it to reduce intestinal motility and relax the intestines when they act up. Does make you drowsy but not like Xanax or Valium. Donnatal is specific as it is for... -

ARCHIVED Depression...is It Normal?does It Get Better?
debmidge replied to tsgillen's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My husband has had undiagnosed/misdiagnosed celiac disease since 1997 to 2003. Could not take anti depressants due to neurological side effects. His depression was suicidal it was so deep. Late 2003 he went 100% gluten-free all the time. The depression lifted, however it still remains at a low level and he has his ups and down. My thinking... -
My husband has had misdiagnosed celiac disease from 1977 to 2003 and during that time developed major, suicidal depression (can't take anti-depressants due to neurological side effects). After diagnosed in 2003 with celiac disease, depression lifted, but still exists and he has good and bad days now. He is 100% gluten-free all the time. I think the...

ARCHIVED Loss Of Padding On Feet And Bottom
debmidge replied to Lisa's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
P.S. Yes, husband has to sit on padded chairs or bring a pillow (which he hates as he says he feels like a girl to have to do that). He can't sit too long even with a pillow. -
ARCHIVED Loss Of Padding On Feet And Bottom
debmidge replied to Lisa's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My husband has lost all of his body fat from 27+ years of being misdiagnosed. His weight prior to celiac was a muscular 175 ( at 5' 10" tall) then after 3 moths of being sick dropped to 155; over the next two years he went down to 128 and the gastro didn't think anything of this! As a result of over 27 years of beig misdiagnosed he has: 1) Lost... -

RE: Name calling - I am a Glutenfree extremist and proud of it! I'll turn over every stone to find it and not rest until I know one way or the other. As most of you know, my husband has celiac, I do not; but I take great lengths to purchase everything gluten free. The NIH declared that the rate of celiac is 1 in 133; but food and cosmetic manufacturers... -
Support Groups In Northern New Jersey?
debmidge replied to newo ikkin's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
If I hear of one in your area I'll let you know, better yet go to CSA's website (Celiac Sprue Association) and see if they list known support groups in NJ. They did last I checked. Maybe there's a re-formed group in your area. I know where Jefferson Twsp is. Maybe was there once/twice in my life. Do you know of any other celiacs in school?
