  1. HappyBunnyGirl1, Have you been avoiding ALL gluten or just wheat gluten? If you haven't also been checking for rye, barley, oats and all the things they're in such as spelt, triticum, and malt, it would make sense that you wouldn't be gaining weight. Once your intestines heal, you should start to gain--well, some don't, but as a general rule--have you also...
  2. According to a FritoLays dietician, four of their products are made on dedicated lines: Lays Potato Chips (Classic), Ruffles, Lays Stax, and I believe, Fritos. Other than those, you're taking a risk, though I can say that I ate FritoLays products constantly for months and had a biopsy a few months ago to make sure that my villi weren't still damaged; they...
  3. Mushimushi2004 tried to post this, but used the report button instead of add reply:
  4. You always need to check with the McDonalds location, but as a general rule, their fries are made in a dedicated fryer, or a fryer that only contains other gluten-free products. Of course, whenever you eat out, there's a risk of contamination--but McDonalds tends to be better than other fastfood restaurants--I've read the horror stories of people who find...

    ARCHIVED Columbia Presbyterian

Dr. Levy also has an office at 16 East 60th street, suite 410 (that's 5th avenue), so you don't need to go all the way up to Columbia Presbyterian. Oh...full name: Joseph Levy (since there might be multiple Levys ). He is a great doctor, though--helped with the celiac, but also found the malrotation--very thorough and persistent. His phone number is 2...
  6. I have always seen the "add reply" button, but for one post today, I only saw the "new topic" and "new poll" options. In that case, I refreshed (press the F5 button or right click and choose "refresh") and then I saw all three buttons.
  7. That's a very good list--will be saving that one. I had about 18 of those symptoms at diagnosis--none now!
  8. Type 1 Diabetes is one of the long-term problems associated with undiagnosed Celiac Disease. EDIT: Here's an article that shows a link between celiac and diabetes: Open Original Shared Link
  9. Okay...so when we combine the original response with Kaiti's response and broncobux's contamination experience there, I think we can effectively strike that from our list of accomodating restaurants/chains.
  10. Yes--you should continue to eat a normal diet until you have finished all testing. Celiac affects 1% of the population--so your symptoms, in addition to the general odds, makes it very likely that you might have celiac. Welcome
  11. The lists aren't correct--you always need to call, unless the company has a labeling policy, such as Kraft. Clan Thompson books are nice because they include date of verification and PHONE NUMBERS in their pocket-sized food and medication booklets. These are nice because some products don't have the number on the package.
  12. Hmmm...I think I and a lot of other people here would...disagree with the logic of this. First off, if he has you go gluten-free for one month, there's a good chance that you might not see any change to begin with. Also, if you test after being gluten-free a month, you may or may not test positive still. Being gluten-free would make you more likely to...
  13. I am still doing wel -- 25 days w/o getting sick!!!! I am not extremely careful when it comes to shampoo--I wouldn't use Suave if I had DH, but I think I'd feel comfortable using their shampoo if it didn't have wheat, rye, HVP, etc. on the label. The reason I wouldn't use it if I had DH is their statement about not testing for gluten.
  14. Yes--and some books have dining cards in different languages--also helpful.
  15. Yea--I've heard complaints about Hunts...the ketchup, but maybe they have contamination issues that cause problems with all of their products.
  16. They should...otherwise they wouldn't be living up to their pledge about listing gluten on the label.
  17. Here's a response from Suave:
  18. Do you want to know if it's gluten-free in the US or Canada? Jello is gluten-free in the US and all gluten must be listed. If there are flavors that contain gluten, Kraft would write them like this: natural flavors (wheat). So in the US, just read the label.
  19. Yes--straying from bars--the great thing about FritoLays is that he can bring in one of those snack-sized bags and no one will think twice about it or make a comment like "your food looks weird"--since everybody eats those chips, anyway. Ruffles, Lays Classic, Lays Stax, and....one other kind that I can't remember now are made on dedicated lines. If you...
  20. Sleep problems, paleness, stomach problems, headaches...sounds like it could be celiac. Then again, she, along with everyone else in your family, should get tested simply because another in the family has celiac. It's possible that she is celiac or one of your parents is an asymptomatic celiac; besides, it affects 1% of the population--and with those figures...
  21. I like Kinnickinick and Ener-G

    ARCHIVED Columbia Presbyterian

He's terrific...I very highly recommend him to anyone with celiac children in New York. Diligent, persistent, spends time with you and doesn't make you feel like you're being rushed the way some doctors do....
  23. This is one response from relatively recently--not sure exactly how recently: They seem to say: the products listed are definitely gluten-free. Then they mention that ALL of their products meet the Codex standard, but some aren't gluten-free. The brandnames they list are gluten-free...the rest you can use, as they do meet the CODEX standard, but...
  24. I like Genisoy bars the most, but there are some Envirokids bars that many others recommend. With Genisoy, though, be careful, because there are only two gluten-free flavors: a chunky southern style PB one and then another PB one w/ honey --names similar to that. I like the first one the most. If you e-mail Atkins, they'll send you a gluten-free list,...
  25. Then they're gluten-free. Hersheys (a company, which Reese's is a part of) has a policy like Kraft's --if there's any gluten in the product, it will show up on the label. This means that if there were wheat, barley, etc. in modified food starch or flavorings, it would be listed like this: modified food starch (wheat).
