  1. O- here. I'm the only celiac in my family as far as I know as well.
  2. I have done a lot of reading on this in the last few weeks since my diagnosis In Canada and the US, the labelling laws fore food are getting very strict. They MUST declare any wheat in a product. There is a list of the most common food allergies, wheat being one of them, and any ingredient on that list MUST, as a matter of law, be on the label. ...
  3. I feel your pain! I spent hours yesterday looking for a decongestant to take care of my hayfever. I am not lactose intolerant myself, but it is even hard enough to find one w/o cellulose of some kind in it, and from what I can remember, that is on the list of ingredients to avoid. I am going to call my pharmacist agon today, and I will ask him if he...
  4. Fellow canadian here, but not from BC. I'm in good old SK. Welcome to the forum
  5. There are a few things I would like to get of my chest. I am organizing a surf and turf dinner for my co-workers this weekend, and now I am not sure if I am even going to go. When I asked the caterer if he could add a ONE gluten free plate to the service, I was told there was no provision for that, and it would not be possible. Here's the kicker, I...
  6. Bump. Do not need the kit. Just trying to help all those other newbies out there who may be looking for answers.
  7. I also live in a shared house. DW DS and DD are all gluten eaters, and I am not. I have only been gluten-free for about a month now, and we have made some fundamental changes. Firstly, DW tried to cook only one gluten-free meal and night, but this is tricky. THere is ALWAYS some rice and leftover meat in the firdge to whip up something for me should...
  8. I have 3 of the Gluten Free Gormet books, and they are ALL womderful. Especially the bread one.
  9. Well, another Canadian and newly diagnosed celiac here. I live in Moose Jaw, Sask. I thought living in sucha small town would be he$$ for a celiac, but it's not. I am also glad to see I am not the only one in Saskatchewan.
  10. Andrea, You can get Tapioca flour at almost any health food store. If all else fails, try talking to themanager of the store where you normally get your supplies and see if htey can order it in for you. As for substitutions for normal flours, there are some commercially available ones that claim they can be changed cup for cup w/ regular flour, but...
  11. I can only speak for me, but my blood work had 4 antibodies on it. One of the results was triple the normal range, and one other was almost double. The other 2 were what the doctor said were considered "equivical", meaning that based on the symptoms I had given him and his own observations (everything BUT a biopsy) could be taken to be celiac. There...
  12. I almost hate the new Subway ads more than pizza hut. I never did like PH pizza, but am a big fan of sub sandwiches. Especially the toasted kind (several chains come to mind here). DW makes me some gluten-free bread at home to have my toasted sandwiches on, but deep down I know they're not quite the same.
  13. terps, My wife found one in a yellow and brown can. It is simply callled MAGIC BAKING POWDER. As far as we can tell, it is gluten-free. The safeway generic brand had "startch" on the label and has since been replaced. Hope that helps.
  14. I have also been tempted. My blood work only came back SCREAMING positive 3 weeks ago, and the diet change has helped a lot. It feels to me much the way it did when I quit smoking 3 years ago. It is hard to stop doing somehting that, in the case of gluten, I have been ingesting my whole life. It seems somedays that there is not enough will power in...
  15. My mother in law just bought us a bread machine since I was diagnosed only 3 weeks ago. It is Cuisanart, and is has a gluten free setting right on the panel. It is the only bread machine they make, so it should be easy to find on their website or in stores. The recipe book it comes with has several VERY good recipes in it. We could only find it at one...
  16. HI all. I am newly diagnosed CEliac, and this is my first post. My Father is a CGA, and he told me, as far as the increased use of cornstartch etc, that ONLY the portion of the cornstartch that is used in the Celiacs meals would be a tax deduction. Also, as far as the deductions go, all medical expenses are calculated on the lowest income earner, so...
