ARCHIVED Gluten In Food
lovegrov replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think most if not all know whether or not their products are supposed to be gluten-free. I don't think they always know whether some ingredients are sometimes contmaninated. Few places actually test for gluten content and the ones that do test probalby don't test every single batch. richard -
ARCHIVED 1 Week Gluten Free
lovegrov replied to lilliexx's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
There's no question at all that some people -- though not all -- do have withdrawal symptoms when they stop eating gluten. Same with sugar. richard -
ARCHIVED Celiac In Toronto News Today
lovegrov replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Publications & Publicity
There is a very low gluten host that the church has approved and that at least some celiac medical experts have also said is all right. Some Catholics take that. Some preists quietly give a gluten-free host. And some Catholics just take the wine. richard -
ARCHIVED Is Mayo Gf
lovegrov replied to scudderkidwell's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
ALL Miracle Whip is gluten-free. And Kraft is a company that clearly lists any gluten, so all you have to do is read the ingredients. richard -
ARCHIVED Smirnoff Vodka
lovegrov replied to lilliexx's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Flour in the processing of wine? Somebody there doesn't know what they're talking about. I've never, ever heard of a wine that wasn't gluten-free. richard -
ARCHIVED Negative Biopsy
lovegrov replied to Cstrong's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well if you like 10+ stomach pain, then, sure, go ahead and eat wheat. Your blood tests alone put the chances of you haivng celiac disease at more than 95 percent. Add in the improvement in symptoms and you're near 100 percent. richard -
ARCHIVED Dannon Yogurt
lovegrov replied to jaimek's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Only Stoneyfield plain is gluten-free, unless they've changed their minds lately. richard -
ARCHIVED Smirnoff Vodka
lovegrov replied to lilliexx's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
ALL Smirnoff vodka (except the malt drink Smirnoff Ice) is gluten-free. The grain it's made from is corn. In reality, ALL distilling alcohol is gluten-free unless gluten is added after the distilling. Distliing takes out the harmful proteins. I know several extremely sensitive people who drink wheat- or rye-based liquors. richard -
ARCHIVED Vanillin
lovegrov replied to lilliexx's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Never found vanillin with gluten. I'ts not an ingredient I question any more. Hershey clearly lists gluten in the ingredients. richard -
ARCHIVED New Here
lovegrov replied to peggles's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
ALL first-degree relatives should be tested -- parents, kids, and siblings. All mine were and my 70-year-old father came back highly positive despite only minor symptoms. From what you've described, you have celiac, no matter what the biopsy says. With highly positive tests and symptoms, it's nearly a 100 percent sure thing even without a biopsy. Sometimes... -
We did this same thing on another celiac forum. Got something over 100 answers. The results? The blood types among the celiac responders matched almost exaclty the blood types in the general population. In other words, the O's make up about 45 percent of Americans, and the O's made up about 45 percent of the people who answered the survey. richard

ARCHIVED Endoscopy Results
lovegrov replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Dr. Fassano (sp?) at the University of Maryland is no longer reading slides unless you are a patient at the center. I think word got out that he would do this and he started getting so many requests he became overwhelmed. richard -
ARCHIVED I Know I Have This...
lovegrov replied to traci's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Four days gluten free won't skew the tests but if you go for very long it might. Given all the symptoms you've described I would think your doctor would quickly agree to the blood tests. If they're positive you could skip the biopsy if you wanted, which probably would take a while to schedule. Or you can just skip all the tests and go gluten-free. It all... -

Do you know you have a good support group in Richmond? It's the West End GIG. I actually came to Richmond for one of their meetings (and to in-laws) when the president of GIG was speaking. Here's e-mail for one of the organizers. Her name is Anna Ashworth. AGAshworth@aol.com richard -
ARCHIVED Need Energy
lovegrov replied to chasefamily's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Take the iron, a good mulitvitamin, B complex, and eat plenty of protein. Becaue you're anemic, it will take a while to get the energy back. Even when my iron got back to normal ranges it was still months before I got back to normal. I'm afraid there's no magic pill. richard -

Some Krogers have the same, but not as good as Ukrops. In case you didn't know, Ukrops also has a gluten-free list of products online. I live in Roanoke. I wish we'd get Ukrops here. richard -
ARCHIVED Anyone Not Super Careful About Cross Contamination
lovegrov replied to MichelleC's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The risk of non-Hodgkins lymphoma is indeed higher but it still isn't a very big risk. You're still much more likely to get other types of cancer, heart disease, stroke etc. richard -
ARCHIVED Anyone Not Super Careful About Cross Contamination
lovegrov replied to MichelleC's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Picking your own battles is fine but I have a hard time understanding what's so difficult about using a separate toaster oven or having your own jar of peanut butter to avoid glutne. What the heck is hard about that? As for the bgeer, I just drink rum and other distilled spirits that I KNOW are gluten-free. richard -
ARCHIVED Is It Celiacs?
lovegrov replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Two positive tests is a pretty high indicator of some sort of a gluten problem -- although it might not yet be full-blown celiac. In particular, the Iga test is VERY specific. Are you convinced the biopsy was done correctly, taking a minimum of a half dozen samples (10 is even better)? Damage can be patchy and can be missed. The biggest question is whether... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Not Super Careful About Cross Contamination
lovegrov replied to MichelleC's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you're sharing a toaster oven (which means you are getting crumbs on your stuff), sharing peanut butter (which certainly has bread crums in it), and drinking Amstel Light, which is not gluten free no matter what the company says (every grain expert I've read agrees that brewing does not "burn off" the gluten), then it's no wonder you have ups and downs... -
ARCHIVED Malt..
lovegrov replied to azza's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If the item says it is gluten-free, that means the malt comes from something other than barley. richard -
ARCHIVED Dealing With Other People's Reactions?
lovegrov replied to sunflower's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
debmidge, Has your doctor ever mentioned possible bacterial overgrowth in your husband? If not, this is something worth considering. Symptoms are like celiac. According to one expert (Dr. Cynthia Rudert), a large percentage of people diagnosed with refractory sprue actually have overgrowth. If this hasn't been explored, all you need to do is have him... -
ARCHIVED Malt..
lovegrov replied to azza's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If you see malt or malt flavoring you have to assume it's made from barley because it almost always is. However, you can call the company and check. You can amlt any grain out there, and I've run into a product or two where the malt was from corn. richard -
ARCHIVED Original Hormel Bacon Glutenfree?
lovegrov replied to stef-the-kicking-cuty's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The bacon is gluten-free. Hormel has a whole gluten-free list here: Open Original Shared Link This was under their FAQs, which is where some companies put these things. richard
