  1. I like their cream of mushroom and Manhattan clam chowder (read the label to make sure they haven't changed recently; I haven't had them in a while). They now have two versions of their New England clam chowder. One is gluten-free and one isn't, so read carefully. richard
  2. Even in older people who have been sick for years the incidence of non-Hodgkins lymphoma is very, very low. Yes, there's a bigger chance than for the average person but the percentage of people who actually get it is well below 1 percent. And that's in people who don't go gluten-free. Your son is very, very, very unlikely to get cancer because of celiac...
  3. Mono and diglycerides are in many, many things and almost without exception are gluten-free. richard
  4. Turtle, Don't want to be too discouraging about the tax deduction but you need to remember a few things: 1. You have to be able to itemize to do it. Most people have to buy a house before they have enough deductions to itemize. Until you buy a house, you usually pay less by taking the standard deduction. 2. Medical expenses have to be 7.5 percent...
  5. I would say they generally are. I know that Gold's and Kraft are. People used to avoid horseradish because of added distilled vinegar but we now know that distilled vinegar is safe. richard
  6. According to the USDA, if a company includes wheat or barley in a broth or "flavor" in raw meat, they must clearly list the wheat or barley. Despite all the warnings we always get about this, I have yet to find wheat added to a raw or fresh poultry or pork. There are, however, chemicals that might disagree with some people. richard
  7. Christine, This is a very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very bad idea. You're teaching your child it's OK to cheat and that's just not true. You could be setting her up for future autoimmune diseases and other problems. She MUST go completely gluten-free. Period. richard
  8. Beer bad. Made with barley. richard
  9. I'm curious, how do they know celiac caused the cancer? I have a friend who died of what sounds like the same type of cancer but he didn't have celiac. richard
  10. If you like liver it has tons of iron. richard
  11. Hershey does not hide gluten so if it has wheat, rye or barley it will clearly say so. Same with Kraft and a host of other companies. According to the ingredients you listed, these are gluten-free. richard

    ARCHIVED Fair Food?

You can definitely relax on the cotton candy as it's just spun sugar and coloring. The coloring is not going to have gluten. I don't know of a company you can call to confirm this but every single message I've ever read on cotton candy has said it's all gluten-free. The shaved ice syrup is probably the same deal but I can't absolutely guarantee it. I remember...
  13. There's no reason for a person with celiac to have a colonoscopy unless you've reached the age where everybody should have one done. Top celiac doctors also agree that as long as you're improving on the diet and your bloodwork is good, there's absolutely no reason to have repeat endoscopies. It's expensive, slightly risky, and just unnecessary. If you...
  14. If you have DH you have or will have celiac. The recent NIH consensus conference on celiac, which included all the top U.S. experts in celiac, agreed that there's no need to test people with DH for celiac. They just need to go gluten-free. I had DH for more than 20 years and nobody ever told me this. I nearly died from celiac. If either you or your doctor...
  15. I've never found a brie that wasn't gluten-free. It's also not true that all blue cheese has gluten. Most blue cheese made in the U.S. is started on an artificial medium, not bread. Boar's Head blue cheese is gluten-free. The cheese used in Outback's blue cheese dressing is gluten-free. Kraft and Marie's blue cheese dressings are gluten-free (or were last...
  16. Thanks for the advice. "My most important piece of advice about restaurants is to tell ten people every time you have a bad experience. If business starts slacking off because they won't take care of people the restaurant will either close or wake up and take notice. If you're feeling charitable tell more than the one person when you have a good meal....
  17. Notice that said person posted 16 times in one day and hasn't returned. Troll. richard
  18. Real butter is always gluten-free and I really can't think of a margerine that has gluten. Breyers clearly lists any gluten so read the ingrdients. Most flavors except the obvious (cookies and cream, cookie dough, etc.) are gluten-free. richard
  19. Somebody who goes to forums and writes inflammatory posts to stir up trouble. On political web sites conservatives will troll liberal sites and vice versa trying to sow dissension or just make the site look dumb. This troll might or might not actually have celiac but apparently DOES have some sort of dietary agenda. richard
  20. It's bunk. Here's an article I got from quackwatch.org. Open Original Shared Link Even if there were something to this, you've been diagnosed with sensitivity not an allergy. richard
  21. Actually, virtually all distilled liquors are gluten-free, including the ones made from wheat. Yes, Kahlua is gluten-free richard
  22. After I replied I realized this was probably a troll. Just what we need. richard
  23. Basically, I have yet to find a hard block cheese like cheddar that isn't gluten-free. I don't even call about them any more. Yes, the Kroger cheese is gluten-free. Kroger does not have a gluten-free list but they are VERY good when you call about specific items. Some people grouch about them not having a list, but I think it makes sense. The reason they...
  24. Yep, if you can't function or you feel like crap all the time, I don't reckon it matters what they call it. You still need to avoid gluten. richard
  25. Sorbitol is definitely gluten-free and I've never seen any indication people with celiac are more sensitive to it. It does nothing to me. But if it bothers you you certainly need anything else giving you bowel problems. richard
