ARCHIVED Newbie
lovegrov replied to Jinxy'sMom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If your doctor wants to do the endoscopy to check for other things as well that would be between you and him. A warning that the small bowel biopsy isn't always accurate either. Doctors take too few samples or the samples they do take miss the damage or the lab can even misread what they get. richard -
ARCHIVED Newbie
lovegrov replied to Jinxy'sMom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Actually, a DH diagnosis might be less expensive, easier and less invasive. According to all the celiac experts, if you have DH you have or will have celiac. The recent NIH consensus conference on celiac even wrote into its report that a biopsy is not necessary for anybody diagnosed with DH because that in itself is a diagnosis of celiac. And the prescription... -
ARCHIVED Vinegar Clarification Please...
lovegrov replied to wifeofceliac's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If you're avoding distilled vinegar at all costs then you're avoiding a lot of good things needlessly. First, every scientist who has weighed in says the distilling makes the product gluten-free even if it comes from wheat. All the major dietician asscoiations agre and so do the major celiac organizations (although CSA sort of qualifies their agreement; but... -
ARCHIVED Vinegar Clarification Please...
lovegrov replied to wifeofceliac's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The only vinegars you need to avoid are malt vinegar and some flavored vinegar (for example Heinz makes an apple cider FLAVORED vinegar that isn't gluten-free -- their regular apple cider vinegar is gluten-free). Regular or distilled vinegar is gluten-free because of the distilling process (and because hardly any is ever made from wheat anyway). richard -
ARCHIVED Mother & Wife To Celiac
lovegrov replied to esmey's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I would continue giving him gluten and keep an eye on him watching for symptoms. Then when he gets old enough (I've heard 2 but others have done it earlier), have him tested even with no symtpoms. richard -
I had a lot more headaches when I was eating gluten but not migraines. Some people report relief after going gluten-free and some don't. I can only assume that gluten is the trigger for some but not for others. richard

ARCHIVED Visiting Florida
lovegrov replied to Mc'nFeedahfan's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I don't know Florida specifically, but most "health food" stores or co-ops carry more specialty gluten-free foods. You can find them in the phone book's yellow pages. Most of the fast food places now have a page on their web site that eiher has a gluten-free list, lists the major allergens in each item, or has complete ingredients for each item. Outback... -
ARCHIVED La Choy Sweet N Sour Sauce?
lovegrov replied to SharonF's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Conagra clearly lists the major allergens, although this does not include barley. Distilled vinegar is safe no matter what the origin. I would probably use this if it doesn't say wheat somewhere but it'sa personal choice. richard -
ARCHIVED Glutenized Rice
lovegrov replied to eyoung44's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Are you sure it wasn't glutenous or glutinous rice? If so, that's gluten-free. However, the wasabi snacks I've seen in the past have had gluten. Not wasabi itself, but the snacks with wasabi. richard -
We've been fighting those little moths off and on for two years. You need to clear out and closely examine EVERYTHING in any cabinet. Look not just for moths but their little eggs and also little fine spiderweb type things. Throw out anything that has any of that in it. They can even be in unopened plasitc bag containers. We've found them in crackers (a real...

ARCHIVED Pork Injected At Grocery Store
lovegrov replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Virtually every cut of pork is now "injected" because we've made it so lean we've taken most of the flavor out of it. If there's something like wheat or barlely in there it's supposed to be clearly listed. Are people violating that law? I can't tell you. richard -
I saw the same delhpi post but if you go back and read it it says that this particular manager worked with a nutritionist to come up with hiw own menu, not a national one. richard

Everywhere I've been the smoked turkey legs have been OK but I'd still ask questions. Most sausages are also OK but you'd need to ask the brand or check it out in some way. Some fairs, depending on where you are, also have steamed shrimp. richard

ARCHIVED Chicken--most Have Broth Added
lovegrov replied to mcalister14's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Probably an uninformed person. From the Starkist site: Q. Does StarKist -

I know the seeds are gluten-free. richard -
ARCHIVED Chicken--most Have Broth Added
lovegrov replied to mcalister14's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Which company was this? I'm curious because I've always gotten the gluten-free OK from tuna makers. richard -
The list you found is more than two years old. Applebee's has been telling us not to eat there for quite a while. richard

ARCHIVED Band-aids: Transdermal Gluten Contamin?
lovegrov replied to Donna F's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What you are experiencing sounds like a contact dermatitist reaction to wheat. This has nothing at all to do with celiac. richard -
ARCHIVED Chicken--most Have Broth Added
lovegrov replied to mcalister14's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Every tuna I've ever checked -- with or without broth -- has been gluten-free. Chicken of the Sea, Bumble Bee, Kroger -- all gluten-free. In fact, some brands even address it at their web site. The vegetable broth is just that. Let me say this again -- to determine if a raw chicken, turkey, pork, or beef has wheat in the broth or flavoring, simply read... -
ARCHIVED Food Labels

Let's settle down. The legislation passed and the companies have to comply by 2006. That battle is over. richard -
ARCHIVED Band-aids: Transdermal Gluten Contamin?
lovegrov replied to Donna F's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
FreyaUSA, As others said your daughter's reaction is not a gluten thing. Gluten on the skin doesn't even cause DH outbreaks, much less go through the skin. But some people simply cannot abide the adhesive on badaids. I suaully have no problem but the adhesive they used when I had hernia surgey caused awful dermal problems, including blisters. For some... -
ARCHIVED Got Biopsy Results, Now Utterly Confused
lovegrov replied to Killarney's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If your blood tests were positive AND if you were having symptoms (I don't remember about this), you almost without question have celiac disease. Problems with the biopsy: Did they take enough samples? Did they just miss the damaged spots? Did the person reading the sample have the necessary expertise? Did you stop eating gluten before the biopsy and if... -
ARCHIVED Daughter Sensitive To Everything

Maybe bacterial overgrowth? Try probiotics? richard -
ARCHIVED Dennison's Chili,
lovegrov replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Dennison's is a ConAgra product. ConAgra will clearly list any wheat if it's there, but not barley, rye or oats. Personally, I don't think you'd find those three hidden in a product like that. Soy flour and soy protein are soy. Caramel color, despite what you hear, really is not a major threat. Hormel chili WITH beans is gluten-free. Without beans is... -
ARCHIVED Gf Vodka?
lovegrov replied to jusright's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
But why wouldn't you trust a vodka made from corn? richard
