ARCHIVED Does The Amount Of Gluten...
lovegrov replied to EddieJP125's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'd say this sounds like a very bad idea. I have no scientific proof, but common sense tells me the more gluten you ingest, the more damage you do. richard -
ARCHIVED Cost Of Gluten-free Diet
lovegrov replied to hlkuhlen's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It all depends. I spend less on food now because I don't eat out as much and I don't buy expensive gluten-free specialty foods. richard -
ARCHIVED Prednisone As Treatment?
lovegrov replied to pturse's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've always considered it my job to find out whether a product has gluten. I don't trust somebody else to do it. Do you expect your grocer to know whether there's gluten in all the products he sells? If not, why would you expect the pharmacist to know? Remember that there's something like 100,000 medications on the market. richard -
ARCHIVED Is It Celiac Or Something Else?
lovegrov replied to acemommy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Plenty of people who have celiac can eat gluten with no obvious symptoms. Your lack of a reaction means nothing. richard -
ARCHIVED Is It Celiac Or Something Else?
lovegrov replied to acemommy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Of course I can't tell you from here whether it's celiac, but if you've been gluten-free for just two months AND you know you've made mistakes during that time, I'm not surprised you haven't felt any improvement, even if you do have celiac. Two months isn't much time and some people feel bad for a week or longer after every mistake. richard -
ARCHIVED Candy ?
lovegrov replied to eternity's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
For Reese's, all you have to do is read the ingredients. richard -
I like the way Kraft does it in the U.S. No list to find and caryy and no need to call. Just read the ingredients. richard

I always ask (although I almost never eat at McDonald's) but virtually every McDonald's has a dedicated fryer. The ones to be real careful about are the small, partial service ones in places like Walmart. richard

ARCHIVED Unsure Its Cd
lovegrov replied to dbuhl79's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Certainly many of those are celiac disease symptoms but they are also symptoms of other things. As for the sig, if your doctor's looking for celiac disease he's exploring the wrong end. richard -
ARCHIVED Are All Turkeys A No-no?
lovegrov replied to Donna F's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There's always been a warning (maybe from CSA?) about self-basting turkeys (a warning to check them, not that you can't ever have them) but all I can tell you is my own experience -- I've never found one with gluten. Note that the list I provided is from last year. I don't personally call about turkeys any more -- I just read the ingredients (note that... -

I would not eat a stuffed bird. richard -
ARCHIVED Should Nutrient Levels Be Tested After Diagnosis?
lovegrov replied to Sharon C.'s topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes, they should check for nutritional deficiencies. You say he's been diagnosed but then you sound skeptical. How was he diagnosed? As far as gaining weight, I recommend as much protein as you can get him to eat. You say he isn't a big eater but assuming he does have celiac, that might be because eating hurts. His appetite might improve on the diet... -
ARCHIVED Testing
lovegrov replied to JUDI42MIL's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If your mother has it and you have symptoms (do you, you didn't say) and your bloodwork is positive, the odds are higher than 99 percent that you have it. Do you need the biopsy to convince yourself and to stay on the diet? If so, tell your doctor that. If not, you don't need the biopsy. But whatever you do don't decide to skip the biopsy now only to come... -
ARCHIVED Are All Turkeys A No-no?
lovegrov replied to Donna F's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm not sure who told you Butterball turkeys have gluten. They don't. They are gluten-free. They come with a gravy packet that has gluten, but it's double sealed and there's no chance it has touched the turkey. Every single turkey I've ever checked has been gluten-free. Virtually all have some sort of broth or flavoring but none seem to have gluten. And... -
ARCHIVED Prednisone As Treatment?
lovegrov replied to pturse's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sorry, didn't remember your history and you didn't give it in your first post. Also when you mentioned being on a strict gluten-free diet for four weeks, I assumed that meant you had not been on a strict gluten-free diet. richard -
ARCHIVED Prednisone As Treatment?
lovegrov replied to pturse's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Anybody who has celiac should be following a super-strict diet. It's really not a choice. Pay attention to cross-contamination issues. Resolve to eat simply -- meat and fresh fruit and vegetables. Very, very few people actually end up with refractory sprue, which is what your doctor is talking about. Dr. Cynthia Rudert, one of the leading celiac doctors... -
ARCHIVED Taco Bell? Are The Corn Tortillas Safe?
lovegrov replied to nailehead's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Folks, go to a REAL Mexican restaurant. The food's a lot better and you have a lot more choice. richard -
ARCHIVED Vinegar Clarification Please...
lovegrov replied to wifeofceliac's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Sharon, I know this list. This is an EXTREMELY old list. If you look at one of the links its says updated in 2001. In addition, some things were put down as no longer gluten-free out of needless paranoia. Discard this list. Do not use it. Codex is a European thing, don't worry about it. And don't worry about Coke. It's gluten-free, but the company has... -
ARCHIVED Do I Really Have Cd?
lovegrov replied to Karina's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You can go ahead an do the challenege and if they have no reactions I'd probavbly just watch them. Igg is the least specific of the tests. My son had lsightly elevated Igg but because he has no symptoms whatsoever we decided just to watch him. I would need more to put him on the diet. richard -

ARCHIVED Do I Really Have Cd?
lovegrov replied to Karina's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Karina, Your original doctor is the smart one. Yes, people with celiac can come back with only an elevated Igg. I know of people who had only elevated Igg and the biopsy showed flattened villi. Your children's dcotor is laboring under the old definition of celiac. In other words, it's not celiac until the villi are completely flattened and you're sick... -
ARCHIVED Vinegar Clarification Please...
lovegrov replied to wifeofceliac's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't know which lists you're looking at. I might be able to help more specifically if you'd tell us which ones you're looking at. Pretty much everybody who counts now agrees on the distilled vinegar thing. The American and Canadian dietician associations, all of the major celiac organizations (although CSA still sort of gives a little warning), and... -
ARCHIVED Celiac-disease Testing
lovegrov replied to dbuhl79's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You must go back to eating gluten for the tests to be accurate. You haven't been gluten-free enough for long enough to skew it yet, but you need to start eating it again. Fatigue is THE most common symptom of celiac disease. richard -
ARCHIVED My Celiac Story
lovegrov replied to num1habsfan's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
"I am the Number One Leafs Fan!!!!! Go Leafs Go!! (That is when they get around to playing again!!!!)" IF they get around to playing again. There's some speculation that this strike could kill off the NHL. richard -
ARCHIVED Can Anyone Explain What Dh Symptoms Are?
lovegrov replied to hapi2bgf's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
This sound more like a topical allergy reaction to wheat. It is NOT DH, nor is it a celiac reaction. DH is the itchy clear blisters on various parts of your body. The only reason your skin would crack is from scratching them. richard
