  1. "Is that possible that although it contains barley, the gluten content is lower than the "gluten free level"? I personally thought that even trace amounts of gluten were harmful." Below the gluten free level must mean the European level, because there is no official level in the U.S. I can't remember the European level (maybe 200 ppm?). Some people react...
  2. McD's burgers and fries are gluten-free, but in case you're a Big Mac fan (I never could stand them) the special sauce is NOT gluten-free. richard
  3. Five days isn't enough time to heal anything. I'd say what you're experiencing isn't unusual at all. richard
  4. I can't keep track of what everybody's looked for so I'll just ask -- have you considered other intolerances and have you checked for bacterial overgrowth? richard
  5. CSA is the Celiac Sprue Association. It's the largest celiac organization in the U.S. They do have some good information and there are many local groups affiliated with them, but they also have some very bad information. It's hard to know what's what, especially when you're just starting out. GIG is the Gluten Intolerance Group. I like their approach better...
  6. I make small quicky pizzas using corn tortillas. Crisp them a little first, then ingredients, then cook again. I also put a layer of olive oil on first. richard
  7. Blood tests aren't always useless. I was in the hospital essentially dying of malnutrition when my tests came back VERY positive. Without the blood tests I might have died of a mystery disease. As I understand it, somebody with a wheat allergy might or might not be able to eat rye or barley. Some people with a wheat allergy can also eat something like...
  8. Captain Morgan's is gluten-free, according to Captain Morgan's. The coloring in dark rum, including Bacardi, is gluten-free. Somewhere back in the dark ages somebody started the rumor that you were better off sticking to light rum because that darn coloring might have gluten. It doesn't. In fact, every liquor I can remember checking has been gluten-free....
  9. You'll also see wheat flour on the Butterball label because of the gravy packet. It's very easy to miss the fact that you've started reading the gravy ingredients. I've heard of many people doing this. Donna, I also used the CSA guide when I first started and it was indeed at least somewhat helpful. I just wish they would catch up with the times and purge...
  10. Look ast the celiac.com articles, but I believe we are indeed at higher risk for other autoimmune disorders simply because we have one. richard
  11. In this school case I would indeed be concerned because, as you say, there's no way to know what they're doing to it. The turkey will almost certainly start out gluten-free, but then what? One thing I forgot in my last post. I've asked people on three differtent forums now to please tell me when they find raw frozen or fresh turkey (unstuffed) that DOES...
  12. I would agree that probably all mayo is gluten-free. In three years I've never found one that wasn't. richard
  13. There is an increased risk if you're not gluten-free, but even the increased chance is still miniscule. The odds are very small. richard
  14. If you've heard that all self-basting turkeys have gluten the you've heard wrong. I heard the same thing when I started on the diet but it's a celiac urban myth. It's not true. It's false. Period. To say that only kosher turkeys are gluten-free is simply a crime. It's a lie. The CSA is the same group that told us to stay away from stuff like annatto, which...
  15. In my experience, ham is always pretty much OK as long as it has not been commercially glazed and isn't honey baked. Your basic smoked ham is OK. I have yet to find a raw turkey that has gluten. If gluten is added to raw poultry, it must be clearly labeled as such. It cannot be hidden in "flavors" or anything similar. This makes buying a turkey very easy...
  16. I can't tell you about Canada. A lot of the responses you've seen might have been about Hershey USA. richard
  17. The Whole Foods bakery is somewhere in the Carolinas. They started distribution in the Carolinas and some in Georgia and are now spreading out. I understand the one in Charlottesville, Va., now has the products. None west of the Mississippi I don't believe. richard
  18. I don't know the brand but it's not something I would be concerned about. richard
  19. Here's a line from the recent NIH consensus statement on celiac. RThis document contains a lot of the latest info. "The presence of obesity does not exclude the diagnosis." You can see the whole document here: Open Original Shared Link richard
  20. Good gosh, if a doctor's never done a celiac blood panel on you please demand one now. If the doctor tells you you can't have celiac because you're overweight, tell him that's been completely disproven. Or have a dermatologist do a biopsy on your sores to see if you have DH. If you do have DH, that means you have celiac. If all else fails, just go on the...
  21. Whey is a milk product. No gluten. richard
  22. I've heard the flouring happens at some places but not at BK, McDoanld's or Wendy's. Also not at Hardee's but the fryer there isn't dedicated. richard
  23. You don't mention where you're going, which would make it easier to make suggestions. Amazingly enough, I've had goof luck at Waffle House. They make the food right there in front of you and the place where they make eggs and bacon is away from the waffles and pancakes. It's also a homey type place where they really care about the customer. The menu states...
  24. If your doctor's not going to test you for anything else you have nothing to lose. richard
  25. Prego should be gluten-free. I think they'll list any gluten but check with them yourself. richard
