  1. The best advice is to go simple while you learn. Fresh meat, fruit, vegetables, and eggs with a minimum of processed foods. Hard block cheeses are also safe. How old is your daughter? richard
  2. Just saw this. This should add no more than 20 minutes or so to your stay. No extra prep and no extra medication. That's why you want to do both at once, not one at a time. richard
  3. Actually, all of the companies mentioned here don't just list top allergens, they list any gluten. BTW, Oscar Meyer is a part of Kraft. Here is a list of companies or brands (some are subsidiaries of the bigger companies) that list gluten or wheat. On the bigger companies, like Kraft, Unilever, General Mills, or Conagra, go to their web site to see all...
  4. Mike's in the U.S. is not gluten-free (it might be in Canada, not sure). All of those types of drinks in the U.S. have barley malt. If it says it's a malted beverage, it's not gluten-free. richard
  5. Yes, Elmer's is gluten-free. richard
  6. First, you need to find out what the numbers were for all of your tests. You need to know which ones were positive. That makes a difference. If the Iga and ttg are positive, and you've gotten better by going gluten-free, odds are VERY, VERY strong that you indeed have celiac disease. The blood tests soemtimes give a false negative, but when they come out...
  7. A couple of years ago when I went to a GIG conference that featured Steve Plogsted, the pharmacist who put together the glutenfreedrugs.com web site, he said essentially the same thing debmidge said. If a prescription drug in particular is gluten-free, it will stay that way. Companies cannot change even incipient ingredients on a whim. In addition, they...
  8. "Quoting your doctor, who is looking at your personal medical history, may not be helpful to others." Let me repeat one more time why I quoted my doctor. My doctor has celiac. As result, he knows a lot about celiac -- more than the average doctor. He stated that from his research the average celiac who has healed and does not have other medical conditions...
  9. Chapstick is gluten-free. You need to think about the things that your daughters might handle or things on their skin that could accidentally get to their mouths. Playdough has gluten. So do some fingerpaints. richard
  10. If you're trying to lose weight I'd stay away from the gluten-free bread. Lots and lots of empty calories. More calories, in fact, than regular bread. Use corn tortillas. richard
  11. The genetics tests is not definitive of anything. Approximately 30 percent of the population has at least one of the genes, but less than 1 percent of the population has celiac. In addition, it appears that perhaps 1-2 percent of people with celiac have neither gene. richard
  12. I'd guess that gluten is NOT the problem with the ice cream. The vast majority of ice cream is gluten-free. In fact, with most brands, only the obvious stuff (cookies, cake, cookie dough) has gluten. I think you're having an egg or lactose (or both) problem. richard
  13. I would agree that WW is very possible but you take out the wheat and then just count the points. There's plenty of stuff to eat under WW that's gluten-free; you just eat that. I had gotten 35 pounds overweight and went to a modified WW and lost 30. I also started walking 30-45 minutes every day and lifting small weights 2-3 times a week. The exercise is...
  14. I'm completely befuddled as to where you think I'm trying to take anybody's rights away. If you work in a certain job YOU MUST HAVE CERTAIN VACCINES AND MUST BE CLEAR OF CERTAIN ILLNESSES, PERIOD, I don't care what your religion is or anything else. If your religion doesn't allow vaccines, then you simply cannot work in certain professions, including nursing...
  15. I'm not sure I completely undersatand the last post on this. However, I will say that I've seen no evidence whatsoever that a person who has healed and is on the gluten-free diet should not take vaccines. Everyhting I've seen says they should. I did want to show why that, at least in SOME professions, something like a TB vaccine is essential. This is from...
  16. You can't do much more with your brother than tell him that the NIH and all celiac experts say first-degree relatives should be tested (the son doesn't need testing unless your brother has it). My father, brother, sister, son and daughter, none of whom had obvious symptoms, all got tested and my father was positive. richard
  17. Distribution of Whole Foods bakery items is just in the East now and not even the whole East yet. It's moving up the seaboard. I don't think you'll find them anywhere west of the Mississippi. richard
  18. I don't know which test the doctor gave or what scale is being used, but she probably should be below 20. After two years, this number probably should be negative. Personally I would suspect gluten is still slipping in. richard
  19. Limit you? You bet it will. The idea is to clean you out completely, so you'll need to have ready and immediate access to a toilet. You'll need it!!! Your best bet is to stay right beside that trusty home toilet. I felt nothing from the colonscopy and remember nothing at all about it. You will be groggy for at least a part of the rest of the day. BUT...
  20. ConAgra (which makes LaChoy) will clearly list any of the top 8 allergens, including wheat. LaChoy soy sauce is gluten-free. You'd have to read the label for the teriyaki. richard
  21. I've heard this rumor about pepper and flour but don't believe it to be true. I've certainly never found it -- besides, it would gum up the pepper shakers if it got damp. I think people can relax and use the pepper. richard
  22. If you DO have celiac you're not likely to gain weight until you go gluten-free, which, as the doctor said, shouldn't be until after the endoscopy. Once you go gluten-free and have healed, you might not have any trouble at all gaining weight. In fact, some of us found we had to start making a conscious effort NOT to gain weight for the first time in our lives...
  23. I also can't point you to anything other than the celiac.com safe and forbidden lists and the fact that this is what I read in every celiac forum. Most -- if not all -- people I know don't worry about maltodextrin in food. There's another lesson here. Many, many ingredients that we've heard we either can't have or need to be careful about, are in fact...
  24. I can only assume that L&P tested various versions and in Canada folks liked the one with wheat best. Check the French's, but do you all have Kroger stores there? Also, check out Angostura. I'm pretty certain it's gluten-free here. richard
