    ARCHIVED Nausea

Even if wheat is indeed used to "plump" up chickens, it does not carry through to the meat. This is not a concern. richard
  2. In more than three years the only bacon (REAL bacon) I've found with gluten is the one at McDonald's and a local brand in California. All others have been gluten-free. richard
  3. Never found a sweetener that isn't gluten-free. As far as I can tell, they're all OK. richard
  4. If a company says something is gluten-free, I trust them. This doesn't mean there will never be contamination, but I trust they know the ingredients are supposed to be gluten-free. You have to learn this trust or you'll end up with ulcers. Really. Caramel AND caramel color in the U.S. seem to be gluten-free. From what I've read, I've quit worrying about...
  5. I'm honestly not criticizing your claims or choices so please don't take it that way. I am passing along some concerns I've heard over the years. If you were ever audited you would almost certainly have to defend some of your choices. For instance, why the expensive pretzels instead of some regular snack that's gluten-free? Why expensive rice chips instead...

    ARCHIVED Organ Donors

I'm sure the blood doesn't go through celiac testing, plus there are many people with other undiagnosed autoimmune conditions donating. Not allowing blood donation just seems silly to me. richard
  7. There are many, many, many "regular" foods that are gluten-free. richard

    ARCHIVED Organ Donors

In the U.S. we can give blood. Always seemed very weird to me you can't in Canada. I don't think you can pass this along just by giving blood. richard
  9. OK, even if I grant that ice cream is a medical necessity (although I very much doubt the IRS would see it that way; you'd better have a darn good tax attorney), even the cheapest ice cream is almost without exception gluten-free. It would be very hard to argue you have to have the most expensive ice cream for your mental health. Basically, you're arguing...
  10. No relevance that I know of. I was so SEVERELY damaged I was dying yet I have no or very little reaction to gluten, or at least to small mistakes. richard
  11. Don't know of a connection and don't know of a detergent that has gluten. And allergic reactions have nothing to do with celiac, which is not an allergy. The symptoms you describe don't sound like celiac. richard
  12. The primary reason for the higher price of gluten-free items is simple -- as with any other product, the more you can make and sell, the cheaper the price. Volume brings down the price ( I work in publications. 1,00 copies of an item might cost, say, $3,000, but 5,000 copies aren't $15,000, they're more like $4,500). Even the top selling celiac product in...

    ARCHIVED Dapsone

I've never heard of this as a side effect but you vcan do a google search and find them or ask your pharmacist for a list if side effects. richard
  14. I'm not sure how to say this politely, but ice cream is NOT a medical necessity. Please explain to me why any of us needs ice cream to stay alive. In fact, please explain why we need gluten-free bread, cookies, cake, pie, bagels, doughnuts, cereal, etc. to survive. Even if ice cream were a medical necessity, virtually ALL ice cream out there is gluten...
  15. If it's not listed in the ingredients it's gluten-free. Really. Honestly. No rumors. Not open to speculation. richard
  16. Avoid corn syrup??? Corn syrup is ALWAYS gluten-free. Period. 100 percent maple syrup?? ALWAYS gluten-free. Period. Artificial and natural flavors? Yes, there's a small chance of gluten so check, especially with natural flavors (I've actually never found an artificial flavor with gluten). And never found a vanilla with gluten, either. richard

    ARCHIVED Fast Food

Check with Chipotle's main office. Almost everything they serve (burrito wrap and one of the sauces are not) is gluten-free. richard
  18. In three years I've never found a peanut butter that wasn't gluten-free. Yes, Skippy and Jif definitely are. richard
  19. Caramel color is one of those celiac urban legends. It's either always gluten-free or 99 percent so. And Coke and Pepsi are definitely gluten-free. richard
  20. One suggestion is to try to quit looking for gluten-free "options." gluten-free replacement foods are loaded with empty calories. Just eat fresh meat, vegetables, and fruit. richard
  21. But how high is the risk after the increase? People with untreated celiac have an increased risk for non-Hodgkins lymphoma, which always scares people to death, but even after the increase the risk is still fairly tiny. richard
  22. The problem is that only a small percentage of pople who have celiac have been diagnosed. I can't remember the number but I'm pretty sure it's less than 5 percent. If that's right, 5 percent of 39,000 is 1,950. But then there are also people with wheat allergy. richard
  23. In most people the mental fogginess will diminish, but it can take a while. richard
  24. I don't know anything about this link but I think it's a safe bet you aren't going to suddenly get cancer from low cholesterol. Or are you saying low cholesterol is a sign of cancer? Well, it's also a sign of possible celiac. My cholesterol has always been 125 to 130. I thought it was good genetics but it turned out it was one of the signals that I wasn...

    ARCHIVED Allergen Bill

Yes, sorry for the typo. Must proof more carefully. The top EIGHT allergens, including wheat, must be clearly listed. richard
